That can keep the text processed by those specific tasks from being sent to a remote model server. It does not prove that every assistant feature, document, or diagnostic stays private. Whether you can ask about your own files offline depends on the phone, app, model, and document workflow.
Can I run an AI assistant offline on my phone?
On supported Android devices, Google’s AICore system service runs Gemini Nano on the phone. Google says supported tasks, including summarization and smart replies, can work without a network connection or in airplane mode. AICore is available on Android 14 and higher, but support varies by device and manufacturer; Android version alone does not guarantee access. See Google’s AICore help page for its current device and feature guidance.

AICore is a system service, not a general-purpose chat app that appears in an ordinary Play Store search. Google’s Android developer documentation also describes Gemini Nano capabilities exposed through ML Kit GenAI APIs, including prompt generation, summarization, proofreading, rewriting, image description, and speech recognition. Those are developer-facing options, not a promise that every phone or app offers every function. Details are in Android’s Gemini Nano documentation.

Can I ask AI about my documents without uploading them?
Potentially, but “offline AI” and “chat with a document” are separate capabilities. A phone may run a model locally for short prompts while its app lacks file import or document search. A document assistant also needs a way to read and retrieve relevant passages—often by indexing the file or creating stored representations—before sending selected text to the local model.
Before relying on a particular setup, check whether it supports the file types and document retrieval you need, whether the model itself runs locally, and whether the app can perform the whole document workflow with connectivity disabled. A model download may be needed first; model size and speed depend on the phone, and there is no universal minimum memory figure established here.

What available examples establish
Google specifically says supported AICore note-summarization tasks are processed on the phone and not sent to the cloud. That is a scoped statement about those AICore features, not evidence that every app’s document-chat workflow is local.
LOCAI documents downloadable and swappable models and optional sharing: its privacy note says benchmark results may leave the phone if a user opts into a leaderboard, and feedback may be sent if voluntarily submitted. Vesta, an early Android project, describes offline document retrieval, conversation history, and device actions, while its maintainers also note that it is under active development and has rough edges. Treat these as illustrations of possible workflows, not blanket assurances about other apps or stable consumer recommendations.

Does local AI mean my files never leave my phone?
No. “Local” describes where a particular model inference happens. It does not, by itself, establish what information an app can access, what it stores, what diagnostics it sends, or whether another feature uses a cloud service. A workflow can include local inference and still involve network transfers elsewhere.
A 2026 preprint by Jonghyun Chung and Sanket Badhe, “Local Is Not a Sufficient Privacy Boundary”, proposes looking beyond where a model runs. Its framework highlights information an assistant might gather—such as files, messages, calendar entries, screenshots, or notifications—as well as retained summaries or embeddings, tool actions, telemetry, and possible cloud routing. It is a research framework, not a binding standard, but it captures the practical distinction between a local model and a private end-to-end workflow.

Cloud services have their own data practices. Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, with a notice last updated June 29, 2026, lists prompts and shared content such as files, videos, screen content, photos, imported chats, and browser page content, along with generated content and app or device information. It describes uses including providing, maintaining, improving, developing, and personalizing Gemini Apps. This is the notice for Gemini Apps; it should not be generalized to every cloud chatbot.

How to check whether a phone-based document assistant is really offline
- Identify the exact app, model, and phone support. Confirm whether the feature uses Android AICore, a model downloaded by the app, or a cloud model. For AICore, check the phone maker’s support information as well as Android version.
- Complete setup before testing. If the app requires an initial model download, install it while connected. Note whether document indexing or other setup also requires a connection.
- Test the precise task without a network. Disable Wi-Fi and mobile data or use airplane mode, then try importing, searching, and asking about a non-sensitive test document. A successful offline answer shows that this task worked offline in that configuration; it does not prove the app never communicates when connected.
- Inspect storage and deletion controls. Look for local chat history, document indexes, summaries, and embeddings, and find how to delete them. Closing a chat does not necessarily establish that associated files or derived data were removed.
- Review permissions and integrations. Check what files, photos, microphone, notifications, or other data the app can access, and which device actions or connected services it can invoke. Grant only what the task needs.
- Check optional sharing and cloud fallback. Read settings and privacy information for accounts, feedback, diagnostics, leaderboards, and any option to send difficult requests to a server. Turn off optional sharing if you do not want it, and do not assume that airplane-mode success settles what happens after reconnecting.
Which phone can run an AI model locally?
There is no single phone recommendation supported by the available evidence. For Google AICore, the documented baseline is Android 14 or higher, but actual availability varies by model and manufacturer. Third-party local-model apps may support different phones and models, and performance depends on hardware, model size and quantization, app implementation, available memory, heat, and task complexity.
A 2026 Research Square preprint about PocketLLM reports results for one Android prototype, not a general consumer-phone benchmark. Its authors used a quantized Arcee Lite 1.7B model in Q8 GGUF format with llama.cpp and a SQLite-backed retrieval pipeline on a standard 6 GB RAM phone. They report 6.2 seconds mean response latency, 91.5% intent-classification accuracy, and roughly 23% higher performance for retrieval-augmented responses on their domain-specific queries. These figures describe that prototype and test setup only; they do not predict speed or answer quality on another phone or app. See the PocketLLM preprint.
