What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Sometimes, but only if the phone can send power over a cable, the laptop’s connected port can receive it, and the phone can supply a power level the laptop accepts. A USB-C connector alone does not guarantee any of those things. Check both devices’ specifications before connecting them; if the phone’s output is too low, the laptop may charge slowly, fail to charge, or continue losing battery while in use.
Can you charge a laptop with your phone?
In a limited number of device combinations, yes. USB-C devices can switch between power-source and power-sink roles when their hardware and software support it, but not every phone can provide wired power and not every laptop USB-C port accepts charging. USB-IF describes USB Power Delivery as a system for negotiating power between compatible devices, while Microsoft’s USB-C implementation guidance explains that devices can take different power roles.

Phone wireless reverse charging is a separate feature: it does not show that the phone can send power to a laptop through a cable. Look for explicit support for wired reverse charging, USB-C power output, or power sharing in the phone’s official specifications or manual.

What determines whether it will work?
Phone output and laptop input
Check the phone’s wired output profile and the laptop’s exact charging input requirements separately. Microsoft advises that the device, charger, and cable all need to support the power levels required by the receiving device. A headline wattage by itself may not tell you whether their supported voltage and current profiles match.

Power-source and power-sink roles
The phone must be able to act as a wired power source, and the laptop port must be able to act as a power sink. USB-C describes the connector and associated capabilities; it does not mean every USB-C port supports laptop charging or power output.
Port and cable support
Use a cable compatible with both devices’ USB-C and power specifications. The cable cannot add power, enable an unsupported power role, or make incompatible power profiles match. USB Power Delivery negotiation and the capabilities of the source, receiving device, and cable all matter.

The laptop’s model-specific requirements
Requirements differ by laptop. For example, Lenovo says the USB-C input on its cited Legion 5 models requires at least 20 V and 2.25 A; output below that threshold cannot charge that example computer. This is a specification for that model family, not a general minimum for laptops. Lenovo also says that port is not intended as the computer’s primary power input.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to check your phone and laptop
- Find the phone’s official manual or specifications. Confirm wired power output or reverse charging over USB-C. Do not treat wireless reverse charging as proof of wired output.
- Find the laptop’s exact model documentation. Identify which port accepts power and note the required voltage, current, or wattage. Do not assume every USB-C port on the laptop supports charging.
- Compare supported power profiles. Check that the phone can provide a profile the laptop accepts and that the cable supports the relevant connection and power level. Microsoft’s USB-C charging guidance lists insufficient charger power, the wrong port, and cable capability among common causes of charging problems.
- Connect with a compatible USB-C cable and check the laptop’s charging status. If it reports a slow charger or does not charge, disconnect it and use the laptop’s specified adapter or a compatible higher-output USB-C Power Delivery source.
What to expect if the phone can supply power
A phone output below the laptop’s requirements may not charge it at all. Even when the laptop recognizes a lower-power source, it may not keep up with power use while the computer is running. The result depends on the particular phone, laptop, workload, and negotiated power level; there is no universal charging rate or runtime to assume.

Also consider the phone’s limited battery capacity. It may provide a short emergency top-up, but that does not make it a dependable source for sustained laptop use. The cited device documentation does not establish a general estimate for how long a phone can power a laptop.
Which power source should you use?
| Option | When it makes sense | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Phone connected by USB-C | For an emergency, if the phone supports wired power output and the laptop accepts a compatible input. | Phone output, laptop port and input requirements, supported power profiles, and cable capability. |
| USB-C Power Delivery wall charger | For charging from an outlet when its output can meet the laptop’s requirements. | Compatible USB-C port, supported voltage and power levels, and a cable rated for the connection. |
| Laptop-capable power bank | For portable charging when its output is compatible with the laptop. | Output profiles and power capability against the laptop’s specified input; the word “USB-C” alone is not enough. |
USB-IF notes that USB Power Delivery 3.1 extended the standard’s supported applications to 240 W with full-featured USB Type-C cables and connectors. That is a standard capability, not a claim that phones can provide 240 W or that a particular laptop accepts it.

Why might the laptop not charge?
- The phone does not provide wired output: a USB-C port or wireless reverse-charging feature does not prove it can power another device over a cable.
- The laptop port does not accept power: check the model manual for the specific USB-C charging port.
- The output is insufficient or incompatible: compare supported profiles and the laptop’s required input, rather than relying only on a wattage label.
- The cable lacks the required capability: try a cable that meets both devices’ specifications; replacing a cable will not overcome unsupported device roles or inadequate source power.
