Yes. A phone can calculate planetary positions locally, so a server is not inherently required for the core ephemeris math. But there is no established evidence here that phones are faster or generally better than servers. The practical case for local calculation is about what can stay on your device and whether the chart still works offline—not a proven performance win.
What a birth-chart calculation needs to do
Planetary arithmetic is only one part of generating a chart. Gaist describes a process that starts with the local birth time and birthplace, determines the applicable time zone, converts the birth moment to Universal Time, calculates planetary positions with Swiss Ephemeris, and derives houses and angles using the location. This is the provider’s account of its methodology, not an independent performance test. Gaist’s chart-calculation methodology notes that a few minutes can matter near a sign or house boundary.

Swiss Ephemeris is calculation software, not an interpretation engine. Its version 2.10 documentation says, “The Swiss ephemeris provides the calculation of apparent or true planetary positions.” It also describes apparent positions as the convention used in traditional astrology. These technical conventions do not establish that astrological interpretations are scientifically validated. Swiss Ephemeris 2.10 documentation
Can a phone do the calculation without a server?
Yes. AstroClock says it embeds Swiss Ephemeris compiled to WebAssembly and makes no server calls for ephemeris math. It says the app can work offline after the calculation engine has been cached. That is an example of a browser-based local implementation, not a benchmark of a particular phone. AstroClock’s description of local calculation and offline use
#1 Best Overall
A service might still use a server for some parts of its architecture or features. The available examples show that local planetary-position calculations are possible, but they do not establish that every chart feature can work offline or quantify the speed and other trade-offs between equivalent phone and server implementations.
What local calculation means for privacy and offline use
Local calculation can reduce the amount of data sent elsewhere, but privacy depends on each app’s complete data flow—not just where its ephemeris math runs.

- AstroClock: The provider says birth data and settings remain in browser storage, while place-name lookup requires an internet connection. It says the ephemeris engine works offline once cached. AstroClock’s local-computing description
- iPhemeris: The provider says horoscope details are stored on the device or in Apple iCloud and are not sent to its own server. It also says location coordinates and date may be sent to a remote server for time-zone lookup. iPhemeris privacy information
These are provider statements about specific products, not an independent audit or a guarantee about other astrology apps. An app may calculate positions locally and still make a network request for another task, such as resolving a place name or time zone.

Rather than assuming that “phone” or “server” determines quality, check the implementation details that affect your chart and your data:
- Data handling: Find out whether birth date, time, place, or coordinates leave the device, and which features trigger network requests.
- Offline behavior: Check what works without a connection, including whether the calculation engine must first be downloaded or cached and whether place lookup is unavailable.
- Calculation method: Look for the named ephemeris and its version. A clear method lets you understand what the app says it calculates.
- Time and location handling: Check how the service resolves the birth location’s time zone and converts local time. Incorrect inputs or conversion can change chart outputs.
- Chart conventions: Compare the zodiac and house systems used. Gaist notes that house systems can change house cusps and placements without changing zodiac positions. Different conventions can therefore produce different charts even when the same device performs the calculation. Gaist’s methodology
- Calculation versus interpretation: See whether the product separates computed positions from the interpretive claims built on them.
Is a phone more accurate or faster than a server?
No general winner is established. The available evidence shows that a phone or browser can perform ephemeris calculations locally; it does not provide a controlled comparison of speed, accuracy, or privacy between equivalent phone and server setups. Those results would depend on the particular software, device, network, and workload. There is no basis here for claiming a phone is faster or more accurate simply because the calculation runs locally.
