Samsung Quick Share: How to Send Files Nearby and Choose Who Can Find You

Samsung’s current name for its nearby file-transfer feature is Quick Share. On a Galaxy phone, open a photo or file, tap Share, choose Quick Share (or the nearby-sharing option shown), select the recipient, and have them accept. Before sending, check who can discover your phone: Samsung says visibility can default to everyone nearby when Quick Share is opened, and the available labels and behavior vary by device and software.

What Samsung calls Nearby Sharing now

Samsung’s current product and help pages generally call the feature Quick Share. Some Samsung support instructions still use “Nearby Share” for the nearby-transfer flow; it is not a separate physical product. Quick Share can send photos, videos, documents, and other files to supported devices. Depending on the route and device, you can also share by QR code, link, contacts, or Private Sharing. Samsung’s Quick Share page describes the service and its options.

Nearby transfer is intended for devices in proximity and can transfer files without mobile data. Samsung describes support for Galaxy devices and supported Android devices or PCs, but mobile-device interoperability and PC compatibility are not identical. Check the requirements for the particular device and sharing route rather than assuming every Android phone can use every Quick Share option.

What you need before a nearby transfer

Samsung’s described Galaxy phone flow requires Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and calls for a Samsung account; its support instructions also say to turn on Location. Requirements can differ by software and sharing method. Samsung lists Galaxy phones and tablets running Android 10 (Q) or later with One UI 2.1 or later. A recipient must have a compatible device and be set to receive.

  • Keep the phones close together and unlocked while the sender searches.
  • For the recipient to appear, their screen should be on and “Who can share with you” set to Contacts only or Anyone nearby. Devices using the same Samsung account can share regardless of that visibility choice, according to Samsung.
  • Menu names and options may differ by model, software version, and region.

For the Galaxy phone instructions and current receiving guidance, see Samsung’s Nearby Share support page and Quick Share details.

Send a file from one Galaxy phone to another

  1. On the sender, open Gallery or My Files and select the photo, video, or document.
  2. Tap Share, then choose Quick Share or the nearby-sharing option displayed. If prompted, enable Quick Share.
  3. Wait for the nearby recipient to appear, then tap their device name.
  4. On the receiving device, tap the incoming notification and choose Accept.

Keep both devices close during discovery and transfer. Samsung says nearby sharing has no listed limit on the number or size of files, but actual transfer speed and the number of simultaneous recipients vary with hardware and environment. That statement applies to nearby-device sharing, not QR or contact sharing.

Choose the sharing route that fits

Use nearby transfer when the recipient is physically close and both devices can discover one another. If that is not practical, Samsung also documents QR, contact, and link routes; these require internet access and have separate limits. Private Sharing is a separate, more restricted route for supported devices and file types.

Route When it fits Network and limits Samsung lists Handling and expiry
Nearby-device transfer Recipient is close and appears in the device list. Can transfer without mobile data. Samsung lists no limit on file number or size for nearby sharing; speed and simultaneous-recipient count vary. Recipient must be discoverable and accept the transfer.
QR code or contacts Use when you want to hand off through a QR scan or a contact route rather than selecting a nearby device. Requires internet. Samsung US lists up to 1,000 files at a time, 3 GB per file, and 5 GB per day. QR/contact sharing does not support .exe, .com, .bat, .cmd, .vbs, .reg, or .msi files. Samsung says QR/contact links expire after two days.
Link sharing Useful when sharing by a link is preferable; Samsung Gulf documents this route. Samsung Gulf describes link sharing, but the cited Gulf guide does not state a matching file-size or daily limit. Samsung’s US page says QR/contact links expire after two days; do not assume this limit describes every link route in every market.
Private Sharing For supported files and devices when restricted handling and an expiry time matter. Samsung US lists up to 20 files and 200 MB at a time. It supports specified file formats. Samsung says files cannot be saved, resent, or captured with screenshots through the feature. The default expiry is two days and can be adjusted up to seven days.

Limits and feature availability above are Samsung’s published figures and can vary by market or software. See Samsung US Quick Share details and the Samsung Gulf Quick Share guide for the routes they document.

Check who can discover your phone

Before accepting or initiating a transfer, inspect Quick Share’s visibility setting. Samsung says a Galaxy device may become discoverable to everyone nearby by default when Quick Share is accessed, and visibility may change temporarily each time the feature is opened. Labels can include No one, Contacts only, and Everyone or Anyone nearby, depending on the screen and software.

Choose the narrowest setting that suits the transfer, then return to the setting afterward if you do not want to remain discoverable. The same-account exception matters: Samsung says devices signed into the same Samsung account can share regardless of the visibility selection. Check the actual setting on your phone rather than relying on a label or behavior from another Galaxy model.

Use Private Sharing carefully for sensitive files

Samsung describes Private Sharing as a way to limit what the recipient can do with a shared file: the feature blocks saving, resending, and screenshots, and lets the sender set an expiration date. Samsung lists support on Galaxy phones, Tabs, and Books, subject to supported file formats and device availability. The US page lists up to 20 files and 200 MB per transfer; the default expiry is two days, adjustable to a maximum of seven days.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These controls are restrictions within the feature, not a guarantee against every way a recipient could copy information—for example, they do not prevent photographing the screen with another device. Samsung also says Galaxy devices on One UI 5 can detect images containing personal information such as IDs or passports and prompt users to use Private Sharing. Treat that prompt as a safeguard, not as proof that every sensitive detail will be detected.

There is also a specific metadata behavior: Samsung says that when Auto Blocker is enabled with Maximum restrictions, location data is automatically removed from images shared from Gallery. This does not mean every Quick Share transfer strips metadata.

Why the recipient may not appear or a transfer may fail

  • Quick Share is unavailable or off: Check that it is enabled on both devices and that each meets Samsung’s device and software requirements.
  • The receiver is not discoverable: Turn on the receiver’s screen and set “Who can share with you” to Contacts only or Anyone nearby, as applicable.
  • Wireless settings are unavailable: Check Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on both devices; for the Galaxy flow described by Samsung, also turn on Location.
  • The devices are too far apart or locked: Bring them close and keep the sender and receiver screens available while pairing.
  • The transfer still fails: Update relevant apps and services, then restart the device. Exact settings and availability vary by model and software.

If nearby discovery does not work, a QR route may be an alternative, but QR and contact sharing require internet access and have the limits listed above. Samsung’s support guidance is available from its Galaxy nearby-sharing instructions and Gulf troubleshooting guide.

Compatibility beyond Galaxy phones

Samsung US lists Galaxy smartphones and tablets on Android 10 (Q) or later with One UI 2.1 or later. For PCs, Samsung includes supported Galaxy Books—including qualifying Qualcomm-based models released in 2020 or later—and some Windows PCs from other manufacturers with specified Intel Bluetooth and Wi-Fi drivers. Manufacturer, model, software, and driver restrictions can limit functions, so a Windows PC is not automatically a supported endpoint.

Sharing with Apple devices is especially dependent on current model, software, and market. Samsung Gulf’s guide updated July 1, 2026 describes Apple sharing on the Galaxy S26 series and lists supported Apple-device families. Samsung US cites Quick Share app version 13.8.51.27 or later and Google Play Services 26.11.xx or later for its described feature, and says Apple sharing is subject to change. For the documented flow, the Apple recipient must make AirDrop discoverable; some device activities can interfere. Confirm current availability and steps for your phone in its Quick Share settings or Samsung’s support page.
