Your phone carrier can see some information about internet traffic that passes through its network, but HTTPS usually prevents it from reading the contents of secure pages, such as the text you enter into a form. Connection details may still reveal or suggest which services or websites you contact. What a particular carrier collects, keeps, or links to your account depends on its practices, the network, and the laws where you live.
What your phone provider can see
Your carrier carries mobile data between your phone and the internet, so it can observe network-level information about that traffic. Depending on the connection and available signals, this may include destination IP addresses, DNS lookups, connection times, and data volume. Such clues can sometimes identify or suggest a website or service, but they do not necessarily reveal every page you viewed.

HTTPS encrypts the contents exchanged between your device and a secure website. A carrier generally cannot read the page text or information you submit in a properly encrypted session. Encryption does not make the connection invisible: the carrier may still see metadata, and the Federal Trade Commission’s 2021 report says some studied providers used accessed IP addresses to collect or infer website domain names.

The FTC report, What ISPs Know About You, examined six major US internet providers, including mobile providers. The FTC said those providers represented about 98% of the US mobile internet market at the time. The report documented collection of browsing, app-use, and location-related information; at least two providers associated subscriber account information with browsing history, app use, and other behavioral or location information. These are findings about the providers and practices studied in 2021, not a current claim about every carrier or country.

Seeing network information is not the same as keeping a complete, named record of every page a customer visits. The sources cited here do not establish a universal carrier retention period. For provider-specific details, check your carrier’s privacy policy and the rules that apply where you live.
Carrier records are not the same as browser or account history
Different services can hold different records of the same activity. Clearing one record does not automatically clear the others.

- Browser and device: Store local history or site data according to their settings. This is separate from carrier records.
- Websites: Receive requests made to their services and information you submit. Signing in can identify you to a site even when you browse privately.
- Account provider: Google’s Web & App Activity can save searches and activity from Google services. Depending on settings, it can also include Chrome history and activity from sites and apps that use Google services. This is separate from your carrier’s records; see Google’s Web & App Activity controls.
Does Incognito hide browsing from your phone company?
No. Incognito mode mainly limits what Chrome saves on your device after you close all Incognito windows. It does not prevent your carrier from observing network activity. Google’s Chrome Help notes that websites and organisations managing a network—including an internet service provider—may be able to observe activity in Incognito mode. Downloads and bookmarks can also remain on the device.
Deleting browser history removes local browser records; it does not erase carrier records or activity saved separately to an account. To manage Google account activity, use Google’s Web & App Activity controls.

What HTTPS, Private DNS, and a VPN change
| Option | What it helps with | What it does not do | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| HTTPS | Encrypts content exchanged between your device and a secure website. | Does not guarantee that connection metadata or destination clues are hidden. | Protection depends on a secure connection and how the endpoint behaves. |
| Incognito | Limits browser history and site data retained locally after the session. | Does not hide network activity from your carrier, employer, or school. | Local privacy only; downloads and bookmarks remain. |
| Private DNS | Protects DNS questions and answers. | Does not protect the rest of your internet traffic. | DNS-only protection; availability and settings vary by Android device. |
| VPN | Encrypts traffic to a VPN endpoint and can reduce what your carrier can see about destinations. | Does not guarantee anonymity or cover traffic excluded from the VPN. | Trust shifts to the VPN operator; coverage, exclusions, and terms vary. |
Private DNS protects only DNS lookups
DNS helps translate a domain name into the network address needed to connect. Android’s documentation is explicit: “Private DNS helps secure only DNS questions and answers. It can’t protect anything else.” Google’s Android network settings guidance explains the feature. Private DNS is not a substitute for encrypting the rest of a connection.
A VPN changes who can observe the connection
A VPN creates an encrypted connection from your device to a VPN endpoint. This can limit the destination information visible to your carrier, which may still see that you are connected to a VPN and how much data passes through it. The VPN operator becomes a party you must trust, so review its logging and coverage policies rather than assuming the service makes you anonymous.

VPNs may not carry every kind of traffic. For example, Google Fi’s VPN documentation says local-network traffic, tethered-device connections, secondary Android profiles, and some system services may be outside that service’s VPN. Those exclusions describe Google Fi, not every VPN.

How to reduce what others can learn
- Use websites with HTTPS and avoid entering sensitive information on connections that are not secure.
- Use Incognito when you want to reduce browsing traces left on the device, not to conceal activity from the network.
- Review your Google Web & App Activity settings separately from browser history.
- If you use a VPN, check which traffic it covers, what its privacy policy says about logging, and whether its terms fit your needs.
- For carrier-specific collection and retention details, read your provider’s privacy policy and check applicable local rules.
