Can You Work Remotely Over Wi-Fi? What to Check for Reliable Calls

Wi-Fi can support remote work, but reliable calls depend on the connection and signal where you work. Learn what to test, how to improve coverage, and how to stay safer online.

Yes. Wi-Fi can support remote work if your internet connection, wireless signal where you work, and security setup suit your tasks. Email and documents usually need less capacity than video calls, large uploads, or a household sharing the network. There is no single speed that guarantees every remote-work app will perform well.

Is Wi-Fi good enough for working from home?

Often, yes—but the quality of the connection at your desk matters more than the speed advertised for your broadband plan. Walls, distance from the router, interference, and other people using the network can affect performance. Test where you actually work, including the room where you take calls.

Wi-Fi is the wireless link between your device and router; your broadband service is the router’s connection to the internet. A fast broadband plan cannot compensate for a weak wireless signal in the work area, and a strong Wi-Fi signal cannot fix a slow or unstable internet service.

What internet speed do I need for remote work?

It depends on the app and activity. Email and document editing are relatively light; video meetings, screen sharing, and large uploads place greater demands on the connection. Microsoft publishes Teams-specific bandwidth guidance per endpoint, with different minimum, recommended, and best-performance figures by meeting type. These are useful examples, not universal requirements for every work app.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5) | Dual Band Wireless Internet, Gigabit, Easy Mesh, Works with Alexa - A Certified for Humans Device
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Microsoft Teams activity Minimum bandwidth Recommended bandwidth Best-performance bandwidth
Audio meetings 10/10 Kbps 58/58 Kbps 76/76 Kbps
One-to-one video 150/150 Kbps 1,500/1,500 Kbps 4,000/4,000 Kbps
Meeting screen sharing 250/250 Kbps 2,500/2,500 Kbps 4,000/4,000 Kbps

Figures are Microsoft’s published Teams requirements per endpoint; each pair represents upload/download bandwidth. Actual consumption varies with meeting layout, resolution, frame rate, and other conditions. If bandwidth is insufficient, Teams prioritizes audio over video. See Microsoft’s Teams network and bandwidth guidance.

When testing your connection, note both download and upload results. Upload capacity matters when your camera is sending video, you share your screen, or you transfer files. Run several tests at your desk and compare them with results elsewhere in the home; one result is only a snapshot.

How do Wi-Fi bands affect remote work?

The band you use can change the balance of coverage, speed, and interference. The router and work device both need to support a band for you to use it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • 2.4 GHz: Typically reaches farther and passes through obstacles better, but may offer less throughput and face more congestion.
  • 5 GHz: Often provides faster throughput and more non-overlapping channels, but has shorter reach than 2.4 GHz.
  • 6 GHz: Can offer high performance and less congestion near the router, but has shorter range and requires compatible Wi-Fi 6E equipment on both ends.

As Microsoft Support puts it, “In most cases, a 2.4 GHz network will work fine for basic tasks, such as surfing the web or using email.” For calls, a nearby 5 GHz connection may be a better fit if it is stable. If the desk is far from the router or separated by walls, 2.4 GHz may reach more reliably. See Microsoft Support’s guide to Wi-Fi and home layout.

How do I improve Wi-Fi for video calls?

Start with free checks before buying equipment. Test performance in the work area and at another location, then make one change at a time so you can see what helps.

  1. Measure at your desk. Run several speed tests and record download and upload results. Compare them with a test closer to the router.
  2. Improve router placement. If results vary by location, move the access point toward the middle of the home, higher up, and into an open area. Reduce obstacles between the router and work device; move closer when practical.
  3. Try the band that fits the layout. Use 5 GHz for a faster nearby connection, 2.4 GHz when reach through walls matters more, or 6 GHz only when both devices support it and the work area is close enough.
  4. Check network load. See whether other people or devices are using the connection heavily during calls. If the router struggles with simultaneous use or is old, consider whether a compatible router upgrade addresses that specific issue.
  5. Consider an extender only for a persistent dead spot. If the signal remains weak and relocating the router is impractical, an extender may help cover the work area.
  6. Update and secure your setup. Keep router firmware and work devices current, and use WPA2 or WPA3 with strong, non-default passwords.

Microsoft’s guidance on improving internet connections for Teams call quality also emphasizes testing, choosing a suitable band, and considering router or adapter capability when many devices are in use. Replacing a router will not repair inadequate broadband service from your provider.

Is it safe to work on public Wi-Fi?

Prefer a trusted network. On public Wi-Fi, confirm the genuine network name with the venue rather than joining a similarly named hotspot. Follow your employer’s security policy and use its approved VPN when required. A VPN does not make an untrusted network a reason to ignore workplace security rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For travel or an internet outage, a phone hotspot or cellular connection can be an alternative, but performance may be slower and the plan may impose data limits. Microsoft’s wireless safety guidance covers VPN and cellular-data fallback considerations.

Which Wi-Fi security settings should you use?

Change the router’s default administrator and Wi-Fi passwords, use WPA2 or WPA3, and disable legacy WEP and WPA. Microsoft identifies WPA3 as the current standard and cautions against WEP and hiding the network name as a security measure. A hidden SSID does not replace proper encryption and strong credentials.

For managed workplaces, follow IT requirements rather than changing network settings in a way that conflicts with them. CISA’s video-conferencing security guidance recommends changing default router and Wi-Fi passwords and using WPA2 or WPA3 at minimum, with legacy WEP and WPA disabled. The FTC also provides small-business guidance on secure remote access.
