How to Add Private Daily Nutrition Check-ins to a Django REST API

Build a daily nutrition check-in around two rules: define which calendar day a log belongs to, and make the server—not the client—control ownership and calculated totals. In Django REST Framework (DRF), a practical design stores one dated check-in per user, with optional food entries linked to it. Validate submitted values with serializers, scope every read to the authenticated user, and enforce the one-per-day rule in the database.

Choose what “daily” means before designing the models

A check-in’s day should be a calendar date, not a timestamp. An event timestamp records an instant; the date on a daily log answers which day the product assigns that event to. If users can live in different time zones, decide whether the date follows a profile time zone, a validated time-zone value on the request, or one product-wide setting. Also decide what happens when someone travels or changes their setting. Django’s USE_TZ affects datetime handling, and DRF’s date and datetime fields have configurable behavior; use a date field for the check-in day and aware datetimes for event instants. See the DRF field documentation.

Do not derive a daily row’s date from a server-local clock without an explicit product policy. A user near midnight may otherwise have an event recorded on a different day than expected.

Separate the daily check-in from its food entries

A parent record gives the API a stable place for daily notes or other check-in fields. Child entries represent the foods and portions that contribute to any nutrition summary. A typical design includes:

If the product allows only one check-in per user per calendar date, enforce uniqueness on the pair (owner, day) with a database constraint. Serializer validation can catch an obvious duplicate early and return a useful response, but it cannot prevent two simultaneous requests from both passing a pre-check. The database constraint must be the final arbiter; catch the resulting integrity conflict and return the API behavior your contract specifies.

Define routes and duplicate-create behavior

Keep the API contract predictable. For example, a list endpoint can accept an optional date filter, while create and detail endpoints operate on individual check-ins:

  • GET /api/check-ins/?day=YYYY-MM-DD lists the authenticated user’s records, optionally filtered by day.
  • POST /api/check-ins/ creates a dated check-in.
  • Detail routes read or edit one check-in; food entries can be represented through a nested serializer or a separate nested route.

Specify what happens when a client tries to create a second record for the same day: reject it, return the existing record, or update it. If clients may retry after a timeout, make the chosen behavior sufficiently idempotent to avoid confusing duplicate writes. The database uniqueness rule remains necessary even if the API performs a preliminary check.

Validate input with explicit serializers

DRF serializers validate incoming data and convert model instances or querysets into native representations. A ModelSerializer can derive fields from a model, but explicitly review which fields the API accepts. In particular, do not let a client choose the owner. Assign that from request.user in the view or serializer context. DRF’s serializer documentation describes validation and model persistence; custom serializer create() or update() methods should save model instances when the API is responsible for persisting them.

Use a DateField for the check-in day and decimal fields for quantities or nutrient amounts when precision matters. Validate allowed units, required fields, sensible ranges, and any rules linking a quantity to its unit or selected food. Validate the date format and duplicate rule early for a clear client error, while retaining the database constraint for race safety.

Make every read private to its owner

Authentication identifies the requester; permissions decide whether that requester may access a record. Require authentication for personal check-ins, set ownership on creation from the authenticated request, and filter the view’s queryset by that same user. This filtering is essential for list endpoints: object-level permissions do not automatically remove other users’ records from a list. DRF explains the distinction in its permissions documentation and filtering documentation.

Calculate totals on the server and preserve their basis

Compute summaries from validated, stored food entries rather than accepting a client-supplied calorie or nutrient total as authoritative. Define units and rounding rules, and apply them consistently. If a food catalogue supplies nutrient values, store the chosen food, portion basis, and source identity needed to explain the result later.

Decide whether historical logs should preserve the nutrient values selected at entry time or be recalculated from a changing catalogue. Preserving a snapshot makes the original total reproducible; recalculation may change past summaries when catalogue data changes. Either policy can work, but the application should make the basis clear to users and avoid suggesting more precision or completeness than the source supports.

Use USDA FoodData Central only if lookup fits the product

USDA FoodData Central is an optional source for food search and detail lookup, not a requirement for a daily check-in feature. Its API guide requires a data.gov key and currently documents a default limit of 1,000 requests per hour per IP address; exceeding the limit may temporarily block the key. Keep the key on the server, not in a browser or mobile app, and check the guide for current limits before deployment.

FoodData Central data types differ in provenance, update schedule, nutrient coverage, and portion information. The USDA data type documentation describes these distinctions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Data type What it represents Update cadence or release
Foundation Foods USDA analytical data April and October
Branded Foods Manufacturer label data Monthly
FNDDS Foods compiled for dietary survey use Every two years
SR Legacy Legacy reference data Final release in April 2018

Not every data type contains every nutrient, and portion or weight data vary. Show the selected food and serving basis, retain the source identity, and avoid treating all entries as equally current or complete. USDA describes FoodData Central data as public domain under CC0 1.0 Universal and asks users to list FoodData Central as the source; see the FoodData Central about page.

Keep provider outages from breaking manual logging

A food-data provider should enrich the feature, not make a check-in impossible when lookup is unavailable. Cache search results appropriately, set timeouts, handle rate-limit responses, and let users log locally supported foods or other permitted entries when the provider cannot respond. Store credentials outside source control and keep them out of client applications.

Use throttling as a usage policy, not a security boundary

DRF throttles can help apply per-user or scoped request policies using Django’s cache. They are not a substitute for authentication, permissions, or infrastructure-level abuse defenses. DRF’s throttling documentation warns that built-in throttles use non-atomic operations and that application-level throttling should not be treated as protection against brute force or denial-of-service attacks.
