Yes. In the UK, you can watch live Freeview without a separate box if your television has a built-in Freeview tuner: connect a working aerial and tune the TV. To get Freeview Play catch-up and on-demand features, the television must also support Freeview Play, and it needs broadband for those internet services.
Which Freeview option fits your setup?
| Route | Separate box? | Aerial for live terrestrial channels? | Broadband? | What it provides |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TV with built-in Freeview tuner | No | Yes | No for terrestrial channels | Live Freeview channels through the TV guide. |
| TV with built-in Freeview Play | No, if the feature is built in | Yes for live terrestrial channels | Yes for catch-up and on-demand services | Live channels plus connected players and programmes. |
| Freeview Play recorder connected to a TV | Yes—the recorder is external | Yes for live terrestrial channels | Yes for connected features | Can add Freeview Play to a compatible existing TV; some recorders also provide recording, pause and rewind features. |
| Internet viewing without an aerial | No Freeview receiver is required on a supported device | No for programmes available over the internet | Yes | Access to some programmes and players, not the full live terrestrial channel service. |
Freeview describes TVs bought after 2010 as having Freeview built in, but that is general guidance, not a guarantee for any particular television. Check the exact model’s specifications for a Freeview tuner; check separately for Freeview Play support if you want its connected features. See Freeview’s equipment guidance and Freeview Play information.

Do you need an aerial?
For live Freeview through the television guide, yes: the TV or recorder needs a working aerial connection. A satellite dish does not receive Freeview; it is a different reception route. Freeview explains the aerial requirement in its aerial guidance and addresses dishes separately in its satellite dish help page.
Some programmes and players can be accessed over the internet without an aerial, but this is not the same as receiving the live terrestrial lineup. Channel availability varies with location and signal coverage. Check your postcode using Freeview’s coverage information on its What is Freeview? page; the service describes more than 100 channels, but not every household will receive every channel.

What broadband and equipment do Freeview Play features require?
Freeview Play combines live terrestrial television with connected catch-up and on-demand services. For live channels, connect an aerial; for catch-up and on-demand, connect the TV or recorder to broadband by Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Freeview states a minimum broadband speed of 2 Mbps for these connected services, not for terrestrial live TV. Its Freeview Play explanation describes the connected features.
If your television lacks Freeview Play, a Freeview Play recorder may add the connected service, provided the TV and recorder can be connected as required. Check the recorder’s specifications and instructions for model-specific compatibility. Freeview outlines this route in its guidance for devices without Freeview Play.

How to set up Freeview on a TV without a separate box
- Connect the aerial. Attach a working aerial cable to the television’s aerial input. For a TV with Freeview Play, also connect it to broadband if you want catch-up and on-demand services.
- Open the TV’s initial setup or channel-tuning option. Choose the appropriate terrestrial TV or Freeview setup option; names vary by manufacturer and model.
- Run the channel scan. Let the TV tune and save the channels it finds. Freeview estimates tuning takes three to four minutes. A smart TV may also prompt you to configure Wi-Fi. Follow the steps in Freeview’s aerial and internet connection guide and your TV manual.
- Check the guide and reception. Confirm that channels appear, then use Freeview’s postcode coverage information if expected channels are missing.
What to check if channels are missing or reception is poor
- Make sure the aerial cable is firmly connected and undamaged.
- Check that the aerial is correctly positioned and that your postcode has coverage for the channels you expect.
- If you use a shared aerial, check whether it is working before paying for equipment or installation.
- Freeview recommends a wideband aerial for best results and suggests using a qualified installer if a new aerial is needed. It cites £150 as a typical replacement cost based on industry guidance, but that undated indicative figure can vary by location and installation complexity; request a current local quote.
Does free-to-air viewing mean you do not need a TV Licence?
No. In the UK, the licensing requirement depends on what you watch, not whether Freeview is free or whether you use a separate box. TV Licensing says you need a licence to watch live TV on any channel or streaming service, or to use BBC iPlayer. It says a licence is not needed if you watch only on-demand programmes on other TV services and never watch live TV or use BBC iPlayer. Check TV Licensing’s current guidance for your circumstances.
