What to Look for in an Arc Browser Alternative—and Why No Single Replacement Fits Everyone

Arc is still downloadable, but The Browser Company’s current download page says it receives Chromium updates only and recommends Dia for active security patches. That makes choosing an alternative a practical decision—but the available evidence does not establish one browser as the best replacement for every Arc user. The right fit depends on which parts of Arc you rely on: Spaces and Profiles, Split View, customization, platform support, or its approach to AI.

What Arc users may be trying to replace

Arc’s appeal is not just its ability to load websites. Its homepage highlights Spaces and Profiles for separating work, study, and hobbies, along with Split View and Themes for customizing how the browser is used. Those features point to different needs: keeping activities separate, viewing pages side by side, or changing the interface.

Before switching, identify which of those jobs matter in your routine. A browser with workspaces may help preserve your organization, while one with Split View may suit a side-by-side workflow. A candidate that lacks one of Arc’s features could still be a good fit if you never used that feature.

What Arc’s update statement means for a switch

The Browser Company’s current Arc download page says: “FYI: Arc receives Chromium updates only. For active security patches and enterprise-grade protection, download Dia instead.” This is the company’s statement about its products; it is not an independent security audit or a guarantee about future support. Arc’s homepage also says it receives Chromium updates only.

If security updates are part of your reason for leaving, check the current update policy for any browser you consider and assess it against your own threat model. Do not treat marketing language such as “enterprise-grade protection” as proof of a particular security outcome.

How the main alternatives differ

The alternatives surfaced in a TechCrunch overview published July 22, 2026 represent different product directions, not interchangeable Arc clones. Its descriptions are a dated snapshot; availability, features, and pricing can change.

The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Browser What the cited coverage describes What to weigh as an Arc user
Dia AI-centric browser; TechCrunch reported it was free to download at publication. Consider whether an AI-centered experience is what you want. Arc’s organization model is a separate question.
Zen Workspaces and Split View in the TechCrunch overview. A surfaced Zen page describes vertical tabs and workspaces, and lists Windows, macOS, and Linux support. Worth evaluating if vertical tabs, workspaces, and side-by-side browsing are priorities; verify current platform and feature details with Zen.
Vivaldi Customizable interface. Consider it if changing the browser’s interface matters more than reproducing Arc’s exact workflow.
Brave Privacy-oriented features. Compare its current privacy controls and update information with your needs; the cited description alone does not establish a security ranking.
SigmaOS Workspace approach. Evaluate whether its current workspace features match how you separate activities in Arc.

Why Zen is a plausible candidate, not a proven winner

Zen is the clearest candidate in the surfaced coverage for someone seeking a combination of workspaces and Split View. The surfaced Zen page describes it as a free, open-source Firefox fork for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with vertical tabs, workspaces, and Split View. It lists version 1.23b dated October 3, 2026. Because that is a tertiary source, confirm its technical details and current release information through Zen’s official site or release repository before relying on them.

Those features make Zen worth trying if Arc’s tab organization and side-by-side browsing are the parts you want to retain. They do not demonstrate that Zen reproduces Arc’s complete Spaces and Profiles workflow, nor that it is the best choice across operating systems or user needs.

Choose by the feature you would miss most

  • For separated activities: Check whether the candidate has workspaces, profiles, or another way to keep contexts apart. Arc’s official feature page describes Spaces and Profiles; Zen coverage describes workspaces.
  • For side-by-side browsing: Confirm that Split View or an equivalent is available in the version you plan to use. Arc and Zen are described as having Split View.
  • For a particular device: Verify support for your operating system and mobile devices directly with the vendor. Arc’s download page lists Mac, Windows, and iOS; the surfaced Zen entry lists Windows, macOS, and Linux. These listings do not establish exact supported OS versions or Zen mobile availability.
  • For AI features: Decide whether you want a browser centered on AI. TechCrunch describes Dia that way; Arc’s official feature page instead emphasizes organization and customization.
  • For security or privacy: Read the browser’s current update policy and privacy information. Compare vendor statements rather than assuming that a feature label or marketing claim establishes independent protection.

A practical way to test a replacement

  1. Write down your must-keep tasks. For example, separate work and personal browsing, view two pages at once, or use the browser on a specific device.
  2. Check current vendor documentation. Confirm each candidate’s features, supported platforms, and update policy before installing it; older alternatives coverage can become stale.
  3. Try the candidate with your real workflow. Recreate your usual spaces or work contexts and open pages side by side if that is central to your routine.
  4. Decide what trade-off is acceptable. A browser may suit your device or privacy priorities while organizing tabs differently from Arc. Keep Arc available during the transition if you still depend on a feature the candidate does not match.
