Yes. Most Blu-ray players play standard DVD-Video discs, so your existing movie collection should work. Whether a particular disc plays depends on three things: the player model, the DVD’s region code, and how the disc was recorded. Those are the checks that cause the rare failures.
Standard DVD movies play on Blu-ray players
A commercially pressed DVD-Video disc, the kind sold in stores or rented from a library, is the format Blu-ray players were designed to read alongside Blu-ray discs. Philips states that its listed Blu-ray models read CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs. Its support FAQ, which covers the BDP7200/37 and BDP9000/37, says: “Your Blu-ray player can read CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs, so you can continue to enjoy your existing DVD collection.” (Philips Support)

Panasonic gives the same answer for its players and home theatre systems, stating that they play standard DVD and CD discs in addition to Blu-ray discs (Panasonic Support). Sony’s disc-type support article, last modified March 21, 2023, lists DVD-Video playback for Blu-ray Disc players in its compatibility table (Sony Support).

Check the region code before you play a disc
DVDs carry a region code that limits where they are meant to play. A disc from another region may refuse to load, show a region error, or play incorrectly. The Sharp BD-HP90U operation manual, for example, identifies DVD region 1 for that model and says discs marked 1 or ALL are supported (Sharp manual). That applies to that model only.
To check a disc and player:
- Look on the back of the DVD case or the disc packaging for the region symbol: a number inside a globe, or the word ALL.
- Find the region information in your player’s manual or on the manufacturer’s specification page.
- Compare the two. If the disc’s region is not listed as supported, the disc may not play on that player.
Recorded DVDs are the main exception
Commercial DVD-Video discs and home-recorded discs are not treated the same way. Support for recordable media varies between models, so the same player may handle one burned disc and reject another.

- Finalization matters. Sharp’s BD-HP90U manual says only finalized DVD discs will play on that model.
- Recording format matters. The same manual notes that playback can depend on the format a disc was recorded in.
- Check the manual. Sony advises readers to consult the specific player manual for supported disc types and formats.
Do not assume a home-burned DVD-R or DVD-RW will play just because a store-bought DVD does. Finalize the disc in your recorder, then test one disc before moving a whole archive.
Upscaling changes the output, not the source
Many Blu-ray players can upscale DVD video, sending a larger output signal to your television. Philips documents 1080p and 1080i DVD upscaling for the specific older models on its support page; upscaling options for other models should be confirmed in their own documentation.

Upscaling does not add missing picture detail. ENERGY STAR explains that upconversion does not add information to the video stream, so a DVD does not become true high-definition (ENERGY STAR). A well-scaled DVD can look cleaner on a large screen, but the source remains standard definition.
Ultra HD Blu-ray is a separate case
If you are shopping for 4K discs rather than DVDs, note that the Blu-ray Disc Association says Ultra HD Blu-ray players play current Blu-ray Disc content, but Ultra HD Blu-ray discs cannot be played in a standard Blu-ray Disc player (Blu-ray Disc Association). This does not change whether a standard DVD plays.

What to check when buying a player for DVDs
If you are buying a player mainly to watch an existing DVD library, confirm these points for the exact model:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- DVD-Video playback is listed in the manufacturer’s specifications or manual.
- The DVD region the player supports matches the region of your discs.
- Recorded disc support covers the DVD-R or DVD-RW format you own, and the model’s manual states any finalization requirement.
- Upscaling resolutions are listed if you want a specific output signal.
| Model (manufacturer source) | Standard DVD-Video | Region information | Recorded DVD notes | DVD upscaling |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Philips BDP7200/37 and BDP9000/37 (Philips Support FAQ) | Read DVDs, per Philips | Not stated in source | Not stated in source | 1080p and 1080i, per Philips |
| Sharp BD-HP90U (operation manual) | Supported, per manual | DVD region 1; discs marked 1 or ALL supported | Finalized discs only; playback can depend on recording format | Not stated in source |
| Sony BDP-BX370 article (Sony Support, last modified March 21, 2023) | Listed for Blu-ray Disc players in Sony’s compatibility table | Not stated in source | Consult the specific player manual | Not stated in source |
Use the table as a starting point only. Each model’s own current manual is the authority for its region support, disc formats and output settings, because manufacturers revise these pages.
Testing your collection
Before you move a full library, test three discs: a commercial DVD from your region, an older commercial DVD, and one home-recorded disc if you have any. If the commercial discs play and the recorded disc fails, the problem is most likely finalization or recording format rather than the player’s basic DVD support.
If a commercial DVD fails, check its region code first, then clean the disc and retry before assuming the player is faulty.
