An XRPL account needs XRP for its reserve and for transaction fees, even when the asset you want to hold or send is a stablecoin. You can avoid personally holding XRP only when a sponsor pays those on-ledger costs or a custodial service handles the underlying XRPL account for you.
The distinction is between using an XRPL stablecoin and operating your own XRPL account. A stablecoin balance can be the only asset you think about as a customer, but the ledger still needs XRP somewhere in the arrangement to create accounts, maintain certain ledger objects and pay transaction fees. If you control the account keys yourself, that XRP normally has to be in your account. If another party sponsors the account or keeps assets in a custodial account, you may not need to hold XRP in your own wallet.

What “without holding XRP” can mean
There are three different situations that are often described with the same phrase:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Self-custody: you control the signing keys and submit transactions from your own XRPL account. This account must meet the XRP reserve requirements and pay fees in XRP.
- Sponsored self-custody: you still control your keys, but a sponsor covers specified reserve and/or fee obligations. XRP is still part of the on-ledger arrangement; it simply remains in the sponsor’s account rather than your wallet.
- Custody or an exchange account: a provider controls the XRPL account or accounts and presents you with an internal balance. You may not hold XRP personally, but you also may not have direct on-ledger control until you withdraw to your own account.
So the accurate answer is not a simple yes or no: you cannot run a normal, unfunded, self-managed XRPL account using only a stablecoin, but you can access an XRPL stablecoin without personally owning XRP when someone else bears the ledger costs.

Why a self-managed XRPL account needs XRP
Creating the account
On XRPL, an account is created when XRP is sent to a valid address that was previously unfunded. A stablecoin transfer cannot create that account by itself. The first funding transaction therefore has to deliver enough XRP for the address to become an account and satisfy the applicable reserve.
Base and owner reserves
XRPL’s current Mainnet documentation lists a 1 XRP base reserve for an account and an additional 0.2 XRP owner reserve for each qualifying ledger item. These are protocol values shown for Mainnet at the time of writing, not permanent prices: the reserve schedule can change, and other XRPL networks can use different amounts.
| Ledger requirement | Current Mainnet figure | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Base reserve | 1 XRP | The account itself |
| Owner reserve | 0.2 XRP per qualifying item | Objects owned by the account, such as trust lines |
Reserve XRP is not a transaction charge. It is a balance that must remain available so the account and its owned objects can exist on the ledger. If you remove an object, the associated owner-reserve requirement can be released, subject to the ledger’s rules and any transaction fee.

XRPL-issued tokens are held through trust lines rather than as native XRP balances. A trust line records the relationship between your account and the issuing account, including the limit you are willing to hold. Because a trust line is a ledger object, it can increase the account’s owner-reserve requirement.

XRPL documents a startup exception for a newly funded account: its first two trust lines can be created with only the base reserve. That exception does not turn a stablecoin into XRP, eliminate transaction fees or allow an account to be created with no XRP at all. Additional trust lines and other objects can require the owner reserve that applies at the time of the transaction.
Every transaction fee is denominated in XRP
XRPL transactions specify a fee in XRP. The fee is destroyed rather than paid to a validator or another participant. A transaction can be rejected when the sending account cannot cover the fee, even if that account has enough stablecoin for the payment itself. Fees are not a guaranteed fixed amount: they can change with network conditions, so an application that claims to be “XRP-free” must explain who supplies the XRP needed for each transaction.
How an XRPL stablecoin balance works
An issued stablecoin is a token entry associated with an issuer’s account. Your account’s trust line identifies the issuer and the amount you are allowed to hold. Sending the token usually involves the trust line, the issuer’s transfer rules and a normal XRPL transaction, which still has an XRP fee unless a sponsorship arrangement covers it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe token is not an XRP balance with a different display name. It is a separate issued asset whose availability depends on the issuer and the state of the trust line. A wallet can therefore show a stablecoin amount while the underlying account still needs XRP reserves and fee capacity.

Three ways to use an XRPL stablecoin
| Arrangement | Who holds the XRP for reserves and fees? | Who controls signing keys? | What you must verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-managed account | You | You | Current network reserve, fee balance, trust-line and issuer rules |
| Sponsored account | A sponsor, for the costs it agrees to cover | You, if the arrangement is non-custodial | Whether sponsorship covers fees, reserves or both; sponsor limits and termination terms |
| Custodial service | The provider’s XRPL account(s) | The provider | Supported asset and network, withdrawal rules, fees, custody and redemption terms |
Option 1: Fund and manage your own account
This is the straightforward route when you want direct control and are willing to hold a small XRP balance.
- Choose the exact network. Confirm that the wallet and the issuer both support XRPL Mainnet (or the particular XRPL-compatible network you intend to use). Reserve figures are network-specific.
- Create or fund the XRPL address with XRP. Send enough XRP from a source that supports the network. Sending a stablecoin first cannot activate an unfunded address.
- Check the reserve before adding objects. Leave room for the base reserve, owner reserves for trust lines and any other objects, plus transaction fees.
- Add the issuer’s trust line. Enter the issuer address and the permitted limit exactly as specified by the issuer or wallet. A typo can create a relationship with the wrong account, and an issuer may require authorization before it will accept your trust line.
- Receive or send the stablecoin. Keep enough XRP available for the transaction fee. A stablecoin-only balance does not pay that fee.
Self-custody gives you direct key control, but it also makes you responsible for reserve management, fee funding, address checks and recovery of the signing credentials.
Option 2: Use fee or reserve sponsorship
XRPL supports sponsorship in which one account covers the cost of specified ledger objects and/or transaction fees for another account. The sponsee can retain control of its own keys. The sponsor’s XRP remains in the sponsor’s account, while the ledger records which account is responsible for the sponsored cost.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Sponsorship is therefore a change in who pays, not proof that XRP has disappeared from the system. Before accepting a sponsored setup, establish exactly what is covered:
- Fees only: the sponsor pays transaction fees, but you may still need XRP for reserves.
- Reserves only: the sponsor supports the required ledger objects, but you may need XRP for each transaction fee.
- Both: the sponsor covers the agreed reserve and fee obligations, subject to its limits and policies.
Ask how sponsorship is activated, whether it applies to trust lines and future objects, what happens if the sponsor stops supporting the account, and whether you can still sign transactions independently. A sponsorship service is not automatically an XRP on-ramp; it may cover ledger costs without giving you spendable XRP in your wallet.
Option 3: Use a custodial wallet or exchange
A custodial provider can hide the reserve and fee mechanics from customers. Its own XRPL accounts hold the XRP and process transactions, while your account may be an internal database balance. Official XRPL account guidance notes that private exchanges can keep customers’ XRP in a small number of shared XRPL accounts, so individual customers do not each need to fund a separate account reserve.

This model can let you buy, hold or transfer a supported stablecoin without personally holding XRP, but the provider controls the keys and decides when withdrawals are available. No particular provider or product is implied here. Check the actual service’s terms for:
- Whether it supports the specific stablecoin, issuer and XRPL network—not merely a similarly named token on another chain.
- Whether deposits and withdrawals are enabled, and whether minimums, fees or destination tags apply.
- Whether your balance is an on-ledger token balance or an internal custodial claim.
- How the provider handles freezes, account closure, transaction delays and recovery.
Issuer rules can matter as much as XRP funding
Having enough XRP does not guarantee that a particular stablecoin can be held or redeemed. The issuer controls important characteristics of an issued token.
Authorization requirements
An issuer can require trust-line authorization. In that configuration, creating a trust line is not sufficient: the issuer must approve the account before it can hold the token. A wallet may show the trust line setup screen even though the issuer has not authorized the account.
Freeze controls and transfer fees
Issuers can configure freezing behavior and transfer fees. A freeze can restrict an account’s ability to move the issued asset under the issuer’s rules. A transfer fee can reduce the amount received or increase the amount required for a payment. These controls are properties of the issued token and issuer, not of XRP’s base reserve.
Best Value
Redemption is an issuer promise
“Stablecoin” describes an intended relationship to an off-ledger asset; it is not independent proof that every holder can redeem at a particular price. The token’s value depends on the issuer’s promise and ability to redeem it for the corresponding asset. Read the issuer’s redemption terms, eligibility rules, jurisdictions, fees and suspension provisions before treating the token as cash equivalent.

Common failure points and what to check
The address has a stablecoin but cannot send it
The account may lack enough XRP for the transaction fee, or its XRP may be tied up below the required reserve. Add the required XRP or confirm that a sponsor is configured to cover that transaction. Also check whether the token’s trust line is authorized and whether the issuer has placed a restriction on transfers.
A trust-line transaction is rejected
Confirm the issuer address, the asset code and the account’s reserve capacity. If the issuer requires authorization, wait for approval or use an issuer-approved account. Remember that the first-two-trust-lines exception applies only to a newly funded account and does not remove fee funding.
A custodial deposit does not appear
Verify that you used the exact network and issuer-supported asset, followed any destination-tag or memo instruction, and met the provider’s minimum. A token with the same ticker on another network is not interchangeable. Contact the provider with the transaction hash if the ledger shows a completed transfer but the custodial balance is missing.
A sponsor-covered account stops working
Check whether the sponsor covers the operation you are attempting. A policy may cover ordinary payments but not new trust lines, additional objects or withdrawals. Review the sponsor’s limits and termination terms, and maintain a recovery path that lets you fund the account with XRP if sponsorship ends.
A practical decision checklist
- Need direct key control? Use self-custody or a non-custodial sponsored arrangement; a custodial balance does not give you the signing keys.
- Want zero personal XRP? Confirm in writing that the sponsor covers both the reserve obligations and transaction fees you will incur, or use a custodial service that explicitly abstracts them.
- Holding an issued token? Identify the exact issuer account, trust-line authorization status, transfer-fee policy and freeze controls.
- Relying on a stable value? Read the issuer’s redemption promise and conditions; the XRPL token format alone does not guarantee redemption.
- Moving between services? Verify the network, issuer, deposit and withdrawal support, destination-tag requirements and all applicable fees before sending funds.
- Planning for future use? Recheck live reserve documentation because reserve amounts can change and may differ between networks.
Bottom line
You can use an XRPL stablecoin without personally holding XRP only when another party supplies the XRP needed by the ledger or keeps the activity inside a custodial account. A self-managed XRPL account remains an XRP-based account: it must be created and maintained with the applicable reserves, and every transaction fee is charged and destroyed in XRP. Sponsorship can move those costs to another account while leaving you in control of your keys; custody can hide them entirely while transferring control to the provider. In every case, separately verify the token issuer’s authorization, transfer, freeze and redemption rules.
