Yes—if WhatsApp is already registered. You can usually keep using the account over Wi-Fi after removing the SIM from that phone, or link a Wi-Fi tablet as a companion device. But you cannot create a new WhatsApp account without verifying a phone number. Keep access to the number already registered to your account for future verification and recovery.

Keep using an existing account after removing its SIM
If WhatsApp is already active on your phone, you can remove or swap the SIM and try the app over Wi-Fi. The account is tied to its registered phone number, not to a particular SIM card or slot, so removing the SIM does not automatically log you out. WhatsApp’s guidance nevertheless says to maintain an active SIM or eSIM associated with that number; losing access can make future verification, transfer, or recovery difficult.

- Connect the phone to Wi-Fi and open WhatsApp as usual.
- Do not delete the account or reinstall the app unless you can receive a verification code at the registered number.
- If you are changing numbers, use WhatsApp’s change-number feature while you still have access to the old number.
Use WhatsApp on a Wi-Fi tablet without a second number
A supported tablet can be linked as a companion to your existing WhatsApp account. It does not need its own SIM or phone number, but this is not a way to set up a new account: first register WhatsApp on a phone with a number you own and can verify.

- On the phone, install and register WhatsApp using your verifiable number.
- Install WhatsApp on the Wi-Fi Android tablet and choose the option to link it as a companion device. The app displays a QR code.
- On the primary phone, open WhatsApp’s linked-device settings and scan the tablet’s QR code to complete linking. Follow the current in-app prompts if labels differ by app version.
- Keep using the primary phone periodically. WhatsApp says linked devices can work without the phone staying online continuously, but the primary phone must be used within 14 days to keep the linked devices connected.
WhatsApp’s Help Center lists Android tablets among supported linked devices. Device support and menus can change, so follow the prompts in the official WhatsApp app.

Why email and internet-only numbers do not replace registration
WhatsApp sends a registration code by SMS or phone call to verify a number. Email verification is an additional option for an existing account only when an email address was added and verified beforehand; it is not a number-free signup method. WhatsApp also says an active SIM associated with the account number is needed to receive verification codes. VoIP numbers are unsupported, and landlines are supported only on WhatsApp Business.

Protect access to the account
- Keep control of the registered number even if its SIM is not currently in the phone you use for WhatsApp.
- Change the number in WhatsApp before losing access to the old one.
- Use the official WhatsApp app and linked-device flow. WhatsApp warns that unofficial linked apps or websites can put an account at risk.
