Yes. Vim keybindings work on Windows, macOS, and Linux, either in Vim itself or through Vim emulation in another editor. The main difference is where you want to use them: native Vim provides Vim’s own editing environment, while editor integrations bring Vim-style modes into a host application and can conflict with its shortcuts.
Do Vim keybindings work across operating systems?
The operating system does not prevent Vim-style editing. You can run Vim natively or use an integration such as VSCodeVim in Visual Studio Code or IdeaVim in a JetBrains IDE. These integrations are not guaranteed to behave exactly like native Vim: their scope and available commands depend on the host editor and the integration’s mappings.
VS Code is documented for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its editing shortcuts can be customized, and its basic editing guide points users to keymap extensions for Vim-style shortcuts. On macOS, surrounding VS Code shortcuts commonly use Command (Cmd); Windows and Linux conventions commonly use Control (Ctrl). Those host-editor conventions can still matter while Vim modes are active. See the VS Code keyboard shortcuts documentation and basic editing guide.
Choose where you want Vim motions
| Option | Where it applies | Behavior and setup | Shortcut considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native Vim | In Vim itself, rather than only inside a particular IDE. | Use Vim’s own commands and behavior; consult the help matching your installed version. The Vim help pages available at the time of the cited documentation are for Vim 9.2.1162: Vim help. | Not an emulation layer inside another editor. Shortcuts can still depend on your terminal and operating system. |
| VSCodeVim | Inside Visual Studio Code. | Install the extension and use its Vim emulation and mode-specific mappings. It is not a promise of full native Vim parity. See the VSCodeVim extension. | Vim mappings can overlap with VS Code or operating-system shortcuts; check and customize VS Code keybindings when needed. |
| IdeaVim | Inside supported JetBrains IDE workflows; the cited documentation is for IntelliJ IDEA. | JetBrains documents Normal, Insert, and Visual modes, Command-line and Ex modes, Vim regular expressions, and configuration. See Using IntelliJ IDEA as a Vim editor. | JetBrains warns that IDE keymaps may conflict with Vim combinations. Review the IDE keymap and remap the command that matters to your workflow. |
Set up Vim-style editing in an existing editor
Visual Studio Code
- Install the VSCodeVim extension from the Visual Studio Marketplace.
- Try normal, insert, and visual editing in a file to learn how the extension handles the modes and mappings you use.
- If a combination triggers a VS Code action or an operating-system shortcut instead, open VS Code’s Keyboard Shortcuts editor, identify the conflicting binding, and customize the relevant shortcut or Vim mapping.
VS Code documents separate shortcut conventions and customization options. For Linux installation details, its Linux setup guide describes distribution packages; the exact installation route depends on your distribution.

JetBrains IDEs
Use the IdeaVim documentation for the particular JetBrains IDE and version you have. If a mapping is important to your work, check the keymap and remap whichever command should take priority.

How to decide
- Choose native Vim if you want Vim’s own editing environment rather than modal editing only within another application.
- Choose an editor integration if you want Vim-style motions while keeping the rest of your work in VS Code or a JetBrains IDE.
- Check integration coverage if you rely on less common Vim commands, mappings, or modes; an emulator’s documented support does not establish identical behavior to native Vim.
- Account for shortcut conflicts if a command is intercepted by the host editor or operating system. The operating system, host keymap, and plugin mappings all affect what a key combination does.
- Verify the current version before relying on a particular extension, plugin, or setup path, since integration features and maintenance can change.
