In everyday social-media use, a quote post adds your perspective to another post, while a repost shares the original post without adding commentary. Meta’s materials confirm that Threads treats quotes and reposts as distinct interactions, but do not fully document their current display or composition mechanics.
How a quote post differs from a repost
The practical distinction is whether you are adding your own words. A quote post is the quote-post interaction and is commonly used to share another post alongside your response or context. A repost is the repost interaction and is commonly used to share the original post as-is.
Meta’s reviewed announcements establish the two action names, but do not give a complete current description of how each action is composed or displayed in every version of Threads. Treat the description above as the ordinary social-media distinction, not as a guarantee about a particular screen layout.
What Meta documents about quote-post controls
Meta announced Quote Controls in November 2024. In an April 24, 2025 announcement, it said: “Starting today, you can choose to allow replies and quote-posts only from your followers.” This setting concerns replies and quote-posts on a user’s posts; the announcement does not establish a matching control for reposts. Meta’s Threads feature announcement was later updated on October 30, 2025.

How quotes and reposts appear in Insights
Meta lists quotes and reposts as separate interaction metrics in its creator-focused Threads Insights materials, alongside views and replies. That confirms they are tracked as distinct actions, but does not show that one produces more reach, engagement, or distribution than the other. Meta’s August 2024 announcement about Threads features for creators and businesses describes those metrics.
Which should you use?
- Use a quote post when you want to share another post with your own reaction or context.
- Use a repost when you want to share the original post without adding your own commentary.
Neither action can be called better for reach or engagement on the basis of the cited Meta materials. They establish separate interactions and separate Insights metrics, not an algorithmic advantage.
