Technically, yes to both. The current 3CX Windows Softphone makes calls from a PC, and it can work away from the office if your 3CX administrator has enabled remote access and the network you’re on lets the traffic through. Whether you may make personal calls on a work extension is a different question. The software can’t answer it. Your employer or system administrator can.
First, which “3CX Windows softphone” do you have?
The name covers two different products, and the rest of this article depends on which one you use.

| Current 3CX Windows Softphone app | Legacy standalone 3CX softphone | |
|---|---|---|
| Connects to | A configured 3CX system and your extension | An independent VoIP provider |
| What you need | Your 3CX URL and credentials, or provisioning from the 3CX Web Client | A Windows PC, an internet connection and a VoIP provider account |
| Intended use | Calling through your organization’s 3CX system | Provider-based calling, independent of 3CX Phone System |
| Key caveat | Tied to the 3CX Phone System | 3CX says it is not designed for use with a 3CX Phone System |
If you sign in with a 3CX URL and an extension, you have the current app. If you entered SIP details from a VoIP provider, you have the legacy one. Don’t mix their requirements or troubleshooting. Everything below about travel and tunnels applies to the current app on a 3CX system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCalling from a PC or laptop
3CX’s Windows Client documentation describes softphone mode as something that “allows you to make and receive calls through your PC or laptop without the need for a deskphone.” The dedicated Windows Softphone guide (last updated July 27, 2026) covers provisioning with your 3CX URL and sign-in. A standard headset is a sensible accessory, and 3CX says the legacy standalone app supports standard headsets. No particular model is required or endorsed, so a headset or audio device you already have is fine.

Using it while traveling
3CX documents remote use of its apps through a built-in tunnel, so you don’t need to be on the office network. Three conditions have to hold.
The administrator has set up remote access
This is a system-level setting, not something you can switch on from the app. If the app signs in at the office but not elsewhere, ask your administrator first.

- How it Fits: On-ear compact design may feel snug initially—adjust properly and wear 30-60 minutes daily for the first week. Optimal comfort achieved after 1-2 weeks as ear cups conform to your ears. Take 10-minute breaks during extended use.
- Wired computer headset with foldable design; ideal for calls, meetings, online learning, and more. Compact headset measures 6.1" W x 7.2" H with 2.8" ear cups and 4.4" boom mic. Ideal fit for small to medium head sizes
- Flexible, adjustable boom mic can be positioned at any angle; unidirectional mic reduces the background noise to ensure crisp, bright conversations (Provided that your conversation is under the correct direction of the microphone)
- 32mm speaker drivers offer an immersive listening experience with clear sound quality
- One-touch mute/unmute with intuitive in-line control box; Using microphone, slide the button upward to unmute and enabled audio settings in your device. For USB connection, ensure the 3.5mm jack (4-pin) is fully inserted into the USB adapter. For direct 3.5mm connection, first remove the USB adapter from your device
The network allows the required traffic
3CX’s firewall guide (last updated September 25, 2026) lists these requirements for remote apps:
- Inbound UDP and TCP port 5090 for the tunnel.
- HTTPS on port 443 or 5001 (or whichever HTTPS port your system is configured to use) for presence and provisioning.
Those ports are mostly the concern of whoever runs the 3CX server and its firewall. A traveler can still be blocked by the network they connect from. Documented requirements don’t guarantee that any given hotel, airport, public Wi-Fi or corporate guest network will work. If one fails, try another connection, such as a phone hotspot, before assuming the app is broken.

You don’t need an SBC for a Windows softphone
3CX’s SBC guide (last updated September 10, 2026) is mainly about connecting remote IP phones to a remote or cloud 3CX instance. For a single remote user in the cloud, it points toward apps with an inbuilt tunnel as the alternative. So a traveling Windows softphone user doesn’t normally need an SBC.

The 3CX documentation covers setup and network access. It doesn’t set any rule about personal use of an extension. That depends on:

- Your employer’s policy. Some organizations allow limited personal calls, and others prohibit them. Calls placed through the company system may be logged or billed to it.
- Your system administrator. They control extensions, outbound permissions and call routing, and can tell you what is allowed.
- Provider and local requirements. If you’re abroad, the documentation doesn’t say whether VoIP calling is allowed in a given country, and it doesn’t cover carrier charges. Check with your administrator or provider.
If you use the legacy standalone softphone with your own VoIP provider, the policy question becomes a contract question between you and that provider.

- Ask in writing whether personal calls are allowed, and whether international or outbound calls are restricted or billed.
