No—not if the iPhone has no supported cellular plan. Apple requires iOS 18 or later and a text-messaging plan from a carrier that supports RCS on iPhone. RCS messages can travel over Wi-Fi, so an eligible subscriber may still send them while temporarily outside cellular coverage; Wi-Fi does not replace the plan requirement. Does RCS work on an iPhone with Wi-Fi only?
It depends on what “Wi-Fi only” means. If you mean the phone has no cellular signal at the moment but still has an eligible carrier plan, RCS can use Wi-Fi to carry messages. If you mean the iPhone has no supported carrier plan at all, Apple’s stated requirements are not met.

RCS is a carrier-provided messaging service on iPhone. The internet connection used to transport a particular message and the plan needed to qualify for the service are separate things: Wi-Fi can provide the connection, but it does not supply carrier eligibility.
What does RCS require on iPhone?
- An iPhone running iOS 18 or later.
- A text-messaging or cellular plan from a carrier that supports RCS on iPhone.
- Availability for the carrier and region where the service is being used.
Apple’s support instructions, published May 11, 2026, say that if Settings > Apps > Messages does not show an RCS Messaging setting, RCS may not be available for that configuration. Carrier support and regional availability can change, so check Apple’s current carrier information and ask your carrier whether your specific plan is eligible. Apple also notes that activation after turning on RCS may take a few hours and that carrier fees may apply.

How do you turn on RCS Messaging?
- On an eligible iPhone, open Settings > Apps > Messages.
- Tap RCS Messaging.
- Turn on RCS Messaging.
If the control is missing, enabling Wi-Fi alone will not make it appear; confirm iOS, carrier, plan, and regional support.
What can you use to message over Wi-Fi without a supported plan?
For conversations with other Apple devices, iMessage can send messages over Wi-Fi. Apple describes iMessage as end-to-end encrypted. It is not a general replacement for messaging every phone: when contacting a non-Apple device, do not assume iMessage is available, and RCS and SMS/MMS have their own carrier-plan requirements.

Not all RCS conversations are end-to-end encrypted. Apple says encrypted RCS began rolling out in beta for iPhone users on iOS 26.5 with supported carriers; the rollout is gradual and support is not universal. Encryption applies to a conversation only when all participants’ carriers support it. Look for the Encrypted label and lock icon. Apple says that without this indicator, RCS messages are not protected from third parties reading them while in transit between devices. See Apple’s announcement about the rollout.
