No. Proton is a compatibility tool for running Windows games through Steam on Linux, not a setting available for PS5 console games. For a PS5, use PlayStation’s system and game update tools. If you meant a Linux PC running a Steam game, Proton can be selected per game, but no single setting improves every title.
Why Proton settings do not apply to PS5

Sony documents PS5 system software and game troubleshooting separately from its support for PlayStation games on PC. Updating a PS5 or changing a game’s own settings may help with a console-specific problem, but those actions are not Proton tuning.

- On the console, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings and check for an update. Follow Sony’s PS5 system software instructions.
- Check whether the affected game has an update, then follow Sony’s game-start troubleshooting guidance for the particular problem. Its suggested actions include restarting, updating, and, where appropriate, reinstalling the game.
- Check the game’s own settings and requirements for options relevant to your symptom. Do not look for Proton controls in the PS5 system menus.
If you meant a Linux PC running a Steam game
Proton can be relevant on a Linux PC when a Steam game is made for Windows. First check whether the game offers a native Linux version: native games do not need Proton. Steam Play can be enabled for supported titles or other titles, but compatibility varies by game. Ubuntu’s Proton and Steam Play setup guide explains the selection flow and cautions that unsupported games vary in functionality.

Select a compatibility tool for one game
- In Steam, open the game’s Properties, then choose Compatibility.
- Enable the option to force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, then choose the version you want to test.
- Test the game against the symptom you are trying to fix. Use game-specific compatibility information to guide the choice; there is no universally best Proton version for every title.
Keep launch options specific
Steam’s per-game Properties > General launch options field accepts Proton runtime overrides. Valve documents entering an environment-variable option followed by %command%. Use an override only when there is a documented reason for that game; leaving an option unspecified lets Steam use its defaults. Avoid copying a universal launch command in the hope of a guaranteed frame-rate or compatibility improvement. Details are in Valve’s Proton project documentation.

Sony’s PlayStation gaming on PC support covers PC versions of PlayStation games and supported PC input options. A PS5 controller connected to a Linux PC is a different situation from using Proton on the PS5 itself.
