Yes, in some forms—but not as a blanket promise that Windows or Mac desktop software will install on ChromeOS. You can edit common Microsoft Office files through Microsoft 365 or Google apps, use selected Adobe web and app workflows, and install Steam locally in beta on certain supported Chromebooks. The right answer depends on the exact app, task, Chromebook model, and whether you need offline or desktop-only features.
At a glance: three different kinds of compatibility
| Software | What can work on a Chromebook | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Office | Open and edit Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files through a Microsoft 365/OneDrive setup or Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. | This is a file-editing workflow, not proof that desktop Office for Windows or Mac installs on ChromeOS. Offline editing is limited. |
| Adobe | Use selected browser-based services and supported apps, such as Photoshop on the web, Adobe Express, and Lightroom on the web. | Web and mobile versions do not guarantee the full desktop Creative Cloud feature set or compatibility with every Chromebook. |
| Steam | Install and play some games locally through Steam for Chromebook (Beta) on eligible devices. | The beta is limited to Google-listed models and has game-availability, performance, and stability caveats. |
Can you use Microsoft Office on a Chromebook?
Yes, if you mean working with common Office files. Google documents a Chromebook workflow that connects the Files app with Microsoft OneDrive so you can open and edit Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files using Microsoft 365. Google states that OneDrive is required for this workflow: Open and edit Office files on your Chromebook.

Choose a file workflow
- Microsoft 365 with OneDrive: Use the documented Files app integration when you want to edit Microsoft 365 files through that route. Follow Google’s setup instructions and sign in to OneDrive.
- Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides: Google’s apps can also open Office documents, with files moved to Google Drive. This may suit a Google-centered workflow, but check important documents for formatting or feature differences before relying on it.
These routes are not the same as installing the full Windows or Mac desktop versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The documented workflows also do not establish full parity for specialized features such as macro-heavy spreadsheets.

What if you need to work offline?
Google says Microsoft 365 files and files in Docs, Sheets, and Slides cannot be opened in those apps while offline. A basic editor with limited functionality is available for offline use. If internet-free editing or a desktop-only feature is essential, test a copy of the file on the Chromebook before depending on it.

School and work Chromebooks
Google has separate administrator guidance for Office-file handling on managed ChromeOS devices, including Microsoft 365 web integration and Google Workspace options. Those setups have organization-specific prerequisites; a student or employee may need an administrator to enable access. See Google’s managed-user Office file handling overview.
Which Adobe apps work on a Chromebook?
There is no single compatibility answer for “Adobe apps”: Photoshop on the web, Lightroom on the web, Adobe Express, Android apps, and desktop Creative Cloud programs are different products and delivery methods. Selected browser and app options are available, but that does not establish native installation of the full desktop suite—including desktop Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, or Lightroom Classic—on ChromeOS.

Photoshop on the web
Adobe’s requirements list ChromeOS 102 or later for Photoshop on the web, alongside browser, processor, memory, and storage requirements. Check Adobe’s current Photoshop on the web technical requirements for the rest of the specifications before relying on it. Adobe describes the web version as having a streamlined toolset rather than every desktop Photoshop feature, and web work is saved as cloud documents. Its Photoshop on the web FAQ covers the current service details.
Adobe Express and Lightroom
Adobe announced on October 2, 2023, that Photoshop on the web was coming to new Chromebook Plus devices and Adobe Express was expanding to all Chromebooks. Google’s recommended Chromebook apps page also lists Adobe Express and Lightroom. These are web/app options, not a promise that every feature is available on every model. Check Adobe’s announcement, Google’s recommended Chromebook apps, and Adobe’s current Lightroom web access and technical requirements.

Android apps are model- and policy-dependent
Some Chromebooks can install Android apps from Google Play, but Play Store is not available on every model, and school or work administrators can restrict it. App behavior can also vary by Chromebook. Check Google’s Android app availability and installation guidance and verify the specific Adobe app and device rather than assuming an Android version works like its desktop counterpart.

Steam can run locally through Steam for Chromebook (Beta), but only on supported devices. Google says the beta allows users to buy, download, update, and play games installed directly on the Chromebook. Its published minimums are an Intel i3 or Ryzen 3 processor, 8 GB of RAM, and 128 GB of storage—but meeting those specifications alone does not make a device eligible. Google’s supported-device list controls, and it may change as the beta expands.

Check device eligibility and find the installer
- Look up your exact Chromebook model or code name in Google’s current Steam for Chromebook (Beta) device and setup guidance.
- Check that the Chromebook meets the listed minimum processor, memory, and storage requirements.
- Search the Chromebook Launcher for Steam installer. Google says that if the installer does not appear, the device does not meet the beta requirements.
Do not treat a Chromebook Plus label or the minimum specifications as a substitute for checking the exact model. Google says the beta remains in development, with known bugs and performance issues that affect gameplay and which titles are available. Its games reported to perform well were tested on Chromebooks meeting the minimum hardware requirements; that is not a guarantee for every game, model, or setting. Consult Google’s page for current eligibility and game information.

How to decide whether your Chromebook will handle your task
- Name the exact app and feature. “Office” could mean editing a document or using a specialized desktop feature; “Adobe” could mean a web app or a desktop program; “Steam” could mean local installation or cloud gaming.
- Check the delivery method. Identify whether the workflow runs in a browser, through an Android app, or locally in ChromeOS, and whether it needs an internet connection or cloud account.
- Verify the exact model and ChromeOS requirements. This is essential for Steam eligibility, Adobe browser requirements, and Android app availability.
- Check management restrictions. On a school or work device, ask the administrator whether Play Store, websites, or file integration features are allowed.
- Test the critical workflow before depending on it. Try a copy of an important Office file, confirm the Adobe features you need, or check the Steam beta’s device and game information.
