Yes. You can use Google Maps with Timeline—formerly called Location History—turned off. Timeline controls whether visits and routes are saved to Timeline; it is separate from your phone’s location access and other Google Account activity controls. Turning it off does not guarantee that all Maps-related or location-related activity stops being saved.
Turn off Timeline in Google Maps
Google’s current Android instructions put the control in the Maps app. Labels may vary as Google updates its settings.

- Open Google Maps and tap your profile picture.
- Tap Your Timeline, then More > Location & privacy settings.
- Tap Timeline is on, then choose Turn off or Turn off and delete activity. The second option also deletes Timeline activity according to the choices presented in the app. See Google’s Timeline instructions.
Google Account Help describes the effect this way: “Your device doesn’t save its location to your Timeline.” Turning Timeline off does not automatically change other location services, including Google Location Services, Location Sharing, or Find Hub. See Google Account Help on Timeline.
Google says the Maps app must be version 11.106 or later for Timeline, and that Timeline is not available on Android Go devices. These are the requirements stated on its current help page and may change.

These settings address different kinds of data. Do not treat Timeline, device location, and account activity as interchangeable switches.

Review Google Account activity
Check Search Services History and Web & App Activity in your Google Account. Google says Search Services History settings are being updated and rolled out gradually, so the names and locations of controls may differ. Follow the labels currently shown in your account. Decide whether Maps should have device location access
Device location is a separate choice from saving a Timeline. Google’s Android help presents “Location is on” and “Timeline is on” as distinct statuses. You can decide separately whether Maps should have access to your device’s location; denying that access may affect location-dependent behavior, and the cited help pages do not specify that every Maps feature behaves the same without it.

Incognito is an optional control for activity in Maps, not a universal privacy switch. Google documents it separately for Android and iPhone or iPad. See the instructions for Android and iPhone and iPad. The mode’s limits still apply: it does not govern other apps, voice search, internet providers, or other Google services, and some Maps features are unavailable while it is on.

Why the menus may not match
The Timeline steps above are for Android. Incognito has separate instructions for Android and iPhone or iPad. Google says its Search services settings are rolling out gradually, so account controls and labels can differ. Use the current wording in the Maps app and Google Account rather than assuming every device shows the same menu.
