AMD Helios is a rack-scale AI platform, not a GPU card you can swap one-for-one with an accelerator or rent as a generic server. The closest alternatives depend on what you need: NVIDIA’s integrated NVL72 racks, Intel Gaudi 3 cards and clusters, or cloud access to systems such as GB200 NVL72 and Gaudi 3. They differ in scale, software, networking, and how you acquire and operate them.
What is the AMD Helios AI rack?
AMD describes Helios as a complete rack-scale platform for large-scale AI training and inference. Its announced design combines 72 Instinct MI455X GPUs, 6th Gen EPYC server CPUs, Pensando networking, and AMD’s ROCm software. AMD says the architecture uses UALink over Ethernet for scale-up communication and standards-based Ethernet for scale-out across systems.

AMD’s Helios product page describes an open rack design aligned with Meta’s Open Rack Wide standard. It lists up to 432 GB of HBM4 and 19.6 TB/s of memory bandwidth per MI455X GPU; those are AMD specifications, not independent measurements. The rack is intended to scale beyond a single cabinet, and AMD highlights serviceability as part of the design.
Helios has evolved from an earlier preview. In June 2025, AMD described a future rack based on MI400-series GPUs, Venice CPUs, and Vulcano NICs, alongside a rollout of earlier MI350 infrastructure with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. AMD’s later Helios launch announcement describes the MI455X, EPYC, and Pensando design. Treat the June 2025 preview as an earlier product description, not the final announced Helios configuration.

What are the alternatives to AMD Helios?
The main distinction is what is being compared: an integrated rack, an accelerator and cluster path, or rented capacity. A rack includes coordinated compute, fabrics, power and cooling requirements; an accelerator card is one component to integrate into a server or cluster; a cloud instance is access to provider-operated infrastructure.
| Option | What the cited platform description includes | Acquisition model |
|---|---|---|
| AMD Helios | 72 MI455X GPUs, EPYC CPUs, Pensando networking, ROCm, and an open rack architecture | Rack-scale platform |
| NVIDIA GB200 NVL72 | 72 Blackwell GPUs, 36 Grace CPUs, and a 72-GPU NVLink domain | Integrated rack; also announced as a cloud instance through CoreWeave |
| Intel Gaudi 3 | PCIe accelerator card and a 32-node cluster reference design, using Ethernet networking | Accelerator or cluster through OEM and cloud routes |
| Cloud accelerator capacity | Provider-operated systems, including announced GB200 NVL72 and Gaudi 3 offerings | Rented capacity, subject to provider availability and terms |
NVIDIA NVL72: the closest rack-level comparison
NVIDIA’s GB200 NVL72 is an integrated, liquid-cooled rack with 72 Blackwell GPUs and 36 Grace CPUs. NVIDIA says the GPUs share a 72-GPU NVLink domain and lists 130 TB/s of GPU communication bandwidth. That figure describes NVLink bandwidth for GB200 NVL72; it is not directly comparable with per-GPU HBM bandwidth or an Ethernet scale-out network.
NVIDIA also describes GB300 NVL72, which pairs 72 Blackwell Ultra GPUs with 36 Grace CPUs and is positioned for inference and reasoning. GB200 and GB300 are different generations, so a comparison should name which one is under consideration rather than treating “NVL72” as a single fixed configuration.
Intel Gaudi 3: an accelerator and cluster alternative
Intel presents Gaudi 3 as a PCIe accelerator card and documents a 32-node cluster reference design. Its materials emphasize standard Ethernet, an open software approach, framework and model support, and OEM routes including Dell, HPE, and Supermicro. This makes Gaudi relevant when a buyer wants a different accelerator architecture or a cluster assembled through server vendors. The cited product description does not establish Gaudi 3 as a like-for-like 72-GPU rack equivalent to Helios or NVL72.

- High Security: The locked glass door ensures the security of data and equipment. Wall mount rack enclosure server cabinet is ideal for use in public places such as offices, effectively protecting the security of your devices.
- Hassle-free Installation: Fully adjustable square-hole mounting rails of the wall mount server cabinet facilitate device installation. Wiring holes on the top, bottom, and rear panels provide you with easy cable routing.
Cloud access: use a system without buying a rack
Cloud capacity can avoid purchasing and operating a rack, but it changes the decision from system ownership to provider inventory, region, capacity, service terms, and workload cost. NVIDIA reported on February 4, 2025, that CoreWeave had launched GB200 NVL72 cloud instances. The announcement said the infrastructure could scale to 110,000 GPUs; that is a statement about announced scale, not a guarantee of current capacity or an individual customer’s access.
Intel reported on May 1, 2025, that IBM Cloud had made Gaudi 3 available, naming Frankfurt, Washington, D.C., and Dallas. Those are regions named in the dated announcement, not confirmation that capacity remains available there now. AMD’s June 2025 release also described an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure rollout based on MI350 rack infrastructure, while previewing the then-future Helios design; it does not establish current Helios cloud availability.
How does AMD Helios compare with NVIDIA NVL72?
At a high level, both are integrated rack platforms designed to bring many accelerators together with server CPUs and a high-speed scale-up fabric. Helios uses AMD GPUs, EPYC CPUs, Pensando networking, and ROCm; GB200 NVL72 uses Blackwell GPUs, Grace CPUs, and NVLink. The exact system configuration, software stack, networking beyond the rack, facility requirements, and workload matter as much as the headline GPU count.
AMD’s launch announcement claims 15% more peak FP4 performance, 50% more HBM capacity, and 6% more HBM bandwidth than its named competitive solution, NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72. AMD attributes these comparisons to published specifications and AMD Performance Labs calculations or modeling; some results use a Kimi K2 Thinking workload, and system manufacturers may vary configurations. These are AMD’s claims under stated assumptions, not independent, matched-system benchmark results.

- Adjustable Depth: 23-40'' adjustable depth is used for servers and network equipment, ensuring enough space for AV equipment, components, and cabling, while allowing you to access ports and equipment from multiple sides.
- Strong Load Capacity: Ground-Mounted Load Capacity: 500 lbs, Wall-Mounted Load Capacity: 150 lbs. The av rack is made of carbon steel for better weldability performance and can help save space while meeting your need to place multiple devices.
- User-friendly Design: Ergonomic design makes the open frame av rack easier to use. The additional top panel is able to place other items with more available space. Roller design moves anywhere and anytime, is convenient, and is more energy-saving.
- Complete Accessories: We provide the accessories you need, including 2 x Pallets, 145 x M5*10 Cross Head Screws, 4 x Casters, 4 x M10*50 Expansion Screws,10 x M6*12 Cage Nuts, 1 x Grounding Wire, 1 x User Manual.
- Wide Application: The server rack wall mount maximizes the use of available space, suitable for retail venues, classrooms, offices, and other places where space is limited.
Do not infer a universal winner from those claims or compare the figures directly with NVIDIA’s GB200 NVL72 communication-bandwidth figure. FP4 performance, HBM capacity, HBM bandwidth, and inter-GPU communication bandwidth measure different things, and Vera Rubin, GB200, and GB300 refer to distinct NVIDIA platform generations.
Is Intel Gaudi 3 a Helios alternative?
Yes, if “alternative” means another way to build or access AI accelerator capacity. Gaudi 3 can fit a buyer’s needs when its card, cluster design, software support, and available OEM or cloud route match the deployment. It is not established by the cited material as a direct rack-for-rack Helios substitute.
Intel’s cloud announcement cited comparisons from a Signal65-commissioned benchmark study and specified workloads. Such results need to be read with the study’s exact workloads and conditions; they do not establish a general performance ranking against Helios or NVL72. A meaningful evaluation should test the models, precision, software versions, topology, and system configurations the buyer will actually use.

Choose an integrated rack when you need a known system boundary
For a rack purchase, assess the complete deployment rather than accelerator specifications alone. Confirm rack power and liquid-cooling readiness, service and support arrangements, scale-up fabric, scale-out network topology, and how the vendor’s software stack fits existing models and operations. Helios and NVL72 are platform-level options; final configurations can vary by system manufacturer.

Choose cards or clusters when you need integration flexibility
A card-based route such as Gaudi 3 can make sense when an OEM server or cluster configuration fits existing datacenter operations. Validate node count, interconnect, framework and model support, and the engineering work needed to port or tune workloads. A 32-node reference design is a design point, not a promise that every OEM system has identical components or performance.
Choose cloud when flexibility outweighs control
Cloud can let a team evaluate or run accelerator workloads without buying a rack, but the useful comparison is the cost and availability for a matched job, not just a per-hour number. Ask the provider for the exact accelerator generation, node and network topology, region, capacity commitment, storage and data-transfer terms, and support level. Recheck availability and pricing directly with the provider because dated launch announcements do not establish current inventory or rates.
Compare matched workloads, not headline specifications
- Use the same model, workload type, precision, batch size, and software versions wherever possible.
- Account for scale-up communication within a server or rack separately from scale-out networking across nodes.
- Identify whether memory figures refer to accelerator HBM or CPU-attached memory, and distinguish capacity from bandwidth.
- Include system configuration, power and cooling, utilization, support, and deployment costs in an ownership or cloud comparison.
- Request current, workload-specific quotes and capacity details; the cited platform material does not establish comparable street pricing or a neutral same-workload benchmark across Helios, NVL72, and Gaudi 3.
What Meta’s Helios plans do—and do not—show
AMD says Meta collaborated on Open Rack Wide and Helios, has early access to the platform, and is testing it with AMD engineers. AMD also says Meta plans to deploy up to 6 gigawatts of AMD GPU infrastructure. That is a stated plan, not completed deployment, and it does not by itself establish that Helios is available to other buyers or prove how it performs against competing systems.

Shortlist NVIDIA GB200 or GB300 NVL72 if you need an integrated NVIDIA rack and its specific generation and software ecosystem. Consider Intel Gaudi 3 if a card-based or OEM cluster route is a better fit and the relevant software support checks out. Consider cloud capacity if avoiding rack ownership is the priority and a provider can confirm the required system, region, capacity, and cost. Compare any of them with Helios only against a defined workload and complete configuration; the available announcements do not support a neutral universal performance winner.
