Some apps sync codes through an account; others let you transfer or restore them when changing phones. A backup is not necessarily a live copy on every device.
What “using an authenticator on multiple devices” can mean
There are three different arrangements: codes can sync continuously through an account, be copied manually to another device, or be restored from a backup when you replace a phone. Check which arrangement your app supports before relying on a second device. These options can also behave differently for personal, third-party, and work or school accounts.
Google Authenticator: account sync or manual transfer
Google says codes saved to a Google Account sync to a new device after you sign in to that account in Google Authenticator. If you choose to use the app without a Google Account, codes stay on that device until you transfer them manually. Google documents an export-and-import flow that uses QR codes; multiple accounts may require multiple QR codes. See Google’s Google Authenticator instructions. The cited page is for iPhone and iPad, so check the current labels on your platform before following steps.
Choosing “Use Authenticator without an account” removes codes from Google Accounts and stores them on the device. Conversely, deleting a synced code removes it from every device where it is synced. Google recommends enabling the app’s Privacy Screen and enrolling in additional 2-Step Verification methods; it also suggests considering passkeys.

Microsoft Authenticator: backup is for restoring a device
Microsoft’s backup and restore works only between the same device type: an iOS backup cannot be restored to Android, or vice versa. The setup requirements differ by platform. Microsoft’s backup instructions say Android backup uses a Microsoft personal account. On iOS, backup requires iCloud Drive, iCloud Keychain, iCloud Backup, and Authenticator enabled under Saved to iCloud.
What returns after a restore depends on the account:

- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
- Third-party accounts using one-time passwords: Accounts such as Amazon, Facebook, or Gmail can have their code entries restored.
- Personal Microsoft accounts using only one-time passwords: Supported accounts can have their code entry restored.
- Personal Microsoft accounts with passwordless sign-in: Only the account name is backed up; sign in again to set up the account.
- Work or school accounts: Only the account name is restored; sign in again. Your organization’s policies and administrator settings may affect setup and recovery.
Passkeys are handled separately from Authenticator account backup and may need to be added again on the new phone. Microsoft’s current support page also says that, starting in January 2027, Microsoft personal accounts will no longer enable Android backup and users will need to enable Authenticator through Google One backup. This is a future change stated on the current support page; check the linked instructions for updates before relying on it.

Move to a new phone without locking yourself out
- Prepare the old phone. Turn on the app’s sync or backup feature if you plan to use it, or follow its documented transfer process. For Google Authenticator’s manual transfer, the old phone must be available to create the export QR code.
- Set up the new phone. Install the authenticator and sign in to the correct sync or recovery account where required. For Microsoft Authenticator, restore only to the same device type and expect to sign in again for work or school accounts.
- Test important sign-ins before wiping the old phone. Confirm that you can access your key accounts and resources using the new device. Microsoft Learn advises: “Keep your old phone until you confirm that you can sign in to the accounts and resources you use most often from the new phone.” See Microsoft’s transfer guidance.
- Remove the old registration when appropriate. Adding Microsoft Authenticator to a new device does not automatically unregister the old one. If sign-in notifications still go to the older phone, remove or forget that device through your account security settings or your organization’s process; Microsoft describes this in its Authenticator FAQs.
- Keep another recovery route available. Where the service supports them, enroll in additional verification methods. Google recommends this; a compatible FIDO2 security key can be an additional sign-in or recovery method, but it does not duplicate authenticator codes.
Choose the setup that fits your needs
- Want codes available after signing in on another device? Google Authenticator’s Google Account sync is the clearest documented option here.
- Replacing a phone rather than keeping two active devices? Microsoft Authenticator backup is a restore process with same-device-type limits, and some accounts require setup again.
- Prefer not to sync through an account? Google Authenticator can keep codes on the device, but you must use its manual transfer flow to move them.
- Protecting a work or school account? Follow your organization’s recovery and device-registration process; restoring an account name alone may not restore its sign-in capability.
