Turning off a wake word changes how you start a voice interaction; it does not, by itself, tell you whether a microphone is powered, when audio is transmitted, or how recordings are handled. Some systems let you start speaking with a button or screen tap instead. The details depend on the assistant and device.
What happens when you remove a wake word?
A wake word is one way to signal that you want a voice assistant to respond. Removing it may replace hands-free activation with a deliberate action, such as pressing a button or tapping a screen. It does not establish what happens to the microphone or audio: those are separate implementation and privacy questions.

For example, Amazon’s Alexa Auto developer guidance describes wake-word, push-to-talk (PTT), and tap-to-talk (TTT) as invocation paths. It says, “If the wake word is off, customers can still use PTT to speak to Alexa in their vehicle.” That applies to the Alexa Auto integration described in that guide, not necessarily to every Alexa device or other assistant. Amazon’s Alexa Auto invocation documentation also discusses listening-state cues for that integration.
Does turning off the wake word turn off the microphone?
Not necessarily. Invocation and audio handling are distinct. A device may use a microphone to detect a wake word locally, stream audio for detection elsewhere, or begin sending audio after a button press. Check the documentation for the exact device and configuration rather than treating “wake word off” as a complete statement about microphone access, streaming, or recording retention.

- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Home Assistant illustrates why architecture matters
Home Assistant documents one satellite setup in which devices stream room audio to Home Assistant, where wake-word detection takes place. Its documentation says, “To avoid being limited to specific hardware, the wake word detection is done inside Home Assistant.” The trade-off is that audio quality varies by device and multiple satellites require server resources. Home Assistant’s wake-word architecture overview describes this design.
The same documentation describes a different Android path: wake-word detection happens on the device, and audio is sent to Home Assistant only after a wake word is detected. These are platform-specific designs, not rules that apply to all voice assistants.

Audio routing and listening signals still matter
Amazon’s baseline voice-interoperability guidance says device makers should send a customer’s voice recording only to the agent the customer intends to invoke. It also addresses attention indicators and customer transparency. Amazon’s baseline guidance summary is relevant when assessing how a system signals that it is listening and where an utterance is routed.

| Consideration | Wake word | Button or tap |
|---|---|---|
| Starting a session | Hands-free; no physical action is required when detection works. | Requires a deliberate press or tap, which may give the user clearer control over when an interaction starts. |
| False or missed activation | May activate unintentionally or fail to recognize the phrase; performance depends on the implementation and environment. | A physical action avoids wake-phrase recognition, but the user still has to operate the control. |
| Audio path | Could involve local detection or audio streamed to another system for detection, depending on the design. | Does not, by itself, establish whether audio is local, transmitted, or retained; check the device’s documented behavior. |
| Speed and usability | Can be convenient when hands-free use is important, including in a vehicle, but depends on reliable detection. | Adds a step; a button or tap may be impractical when the user’s hands or attention are occupied. |
| System demands | Detection may run on-device or require a server or other compute resources. | The control changes invocation, not necessarily the system’s compute or network requirements. |
The comparison is about interaction choices, not a universal privacy ranking. To understand the actual audio path, look for device-specific documentation on microphone use, detection location, transmission, recording retention, and listening indicators.

What changes in a DIY voice assistant?
A custom setup can combine a microphone stream with wake-word detection, voice activity detection (VAD), noise suppression, and a button. These parts solve different problems: the wake-word model looks for a chosen phrase, VAD can help identify speech, noise suppression processes background sound, and the button can provide an alternate way to initiate an interaction.
The openWakeWord project documents 16-bit, 16 kHz PCM input and processes audio in frames; frame length affects efficiency and detection latency. Its optional VAD can suppress positive wake-word predictions unless speech is detected. The project advises tuning thresholds in the target environment, so these options should be tested rather than assumed to improve results in every room or setup. See the openWakeWord documentation for implementation details.

Should you disable the wake word?
Choose based on how you use the assistant and how its specific audio path works. A hands-free phrase can be useful when touching a control is inconvenient. A button or tap can make session initiation more deliberate, but does not automatically disable the microphone or prevent audio transmission. If privacy is the priority, investigate the device’s documented microphone controls and data handling rather than relying on the invocation setting alone.

- Check whether detection runs on the device or elsewhere, and when audio is sent.
- Find out what visual or audible cue indicates that the assistant is listening.
- Consider false activations, missed phrases, response delay, and the practicality of pressing a control.
- For DIY systems, test in the actual room and with the intended microphone, noise conditions, and server capacity.
You do not need new hardware just to change an existing assistant’s invocation method if its settings or controls already offer an alternative. For people building a Home Assistant voice setup, its documentation names the M5Stack ATOM Echo as one option for experimenting with voice assistance; it is not required to change settings on an existing device.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—say
The documented examples show that wake-word and button-based invocation can coexist, and that audio processing differs between implementations. They do not establish a general percentage change in privacy, accuracy, false activations, or user satisfaction when a wake word is removed. Treat claims about those outcomes as specific to a tested device and setup, not as universal results.
