Snapdragon X Series laptops run Windows on Arm: some software runs natively, some runs through emulation, and some workflows still have compatibility gaps. Video editing and development can be practical when their requirements are met; gaming needs a title-by-title check and realistic performance expectations.
What to check before choosing a Snapdragon laptop
Do not treat “Windows app” as a guarantee that every feature will work. Check whether the version you need supports ARM64 natively, runs under emulation, or is incompatible. For demanding work, verify the components around the app too: plug-ins, codecs, drivers, peripherals, and project dependencies.

- For editing: confirm the application version, media formats, plug-ins, control surfaces, Windows build, memory, and GPU driver.
- For development: check runtimes, packages, native extensions, containers or virtualization, device drivers, and kernel-level tools.
- For gaming: check the specific game, anti-cheat and driver requirements, and whether performance meets your expectations on the exact laptop.
- For any workload: compare the actual laptop configuration, including processor tier, memory, and cooling. Snapdragon X models are not interchangeable performance-wise.
Video editing: supported apps, with workflow-specific limits
Adobe’s support documentation, last updated June 17, 2026, says Premiere, After Effects, Audition, and Media Encoder version 26.0 offer native Windows ARM64 support and run on Qualcomm Snapdragon X Series systems. Adobe lists minimum requirements of Windows 11 version 24H2, OS build 26100.2033, 16 GB RAM, and Qualcomm Adreno GPU driver 31.0.121.1. Some media formats also require Windows extensions: HEIC/HEIF import needs HEIF Image Extensions and HEVC Video Extensions, while hardware-accelerated HEVC decoding requires HEVC Video Extensions.

Check the features and equipment your project depends on
- Premiere 26.0: Adobe lists no MKV import, several named RAW formats, AVID EUCON control-surface support, or compatibility with plug-ins compiled for Windows on Intel.
- After Effects: Adobe lists feature differences, including no MKV import and no hardware-accelerated export for selected formats; Intel-built plug-ins are incompatible.
- Audition: Intel-based ASIO drivers are unsupported, and Adobe lists format and plug-in gaps.
- Media Encoder: Adobe lists no MKV import, RAW support, hardware-accelerated export, or Intel-built plug-ins.
Older versions need separate verification. Adobe says unsupported versions were not designed or tested for Windows ARM, though certain 25.x versions run in emulation. This is not evidence that every feature or plug-in works in those versions. Adobe’s listed support establishes compatibility conditions, not export speed: the available information does not establish editing performance for a particular laptop, codec, project size, or effects load. Do not assume a specific machine will handle 4K smoothly without model-specific evidence.
Development: native, emulated, or hybrid
Qualcomm describes three approaches for Windows on Snapdragon development: run x86/x64 binaries through Windows 11 Prism emulation, compile or recompile for native ARM64, or use a hybrid approach with ARM64EC for interoperability. Qualcomm says, “Most Windows apps will work via emulation without modification,” but critical components may need porting for optimal performance and compatibility. Its developer resources include Visual Studio, the Snapdragon LLVM Toolchain, profiling tools, and Qualcomm Device Cloud for building, testing, debugging, and profiling on remote physical Snapdragon devices. Test the project you actually intend to build. A main application may launch while a native extension, driver, package, or hardware tool does not. If a dependency is performance-critical or has no ARM64 build, test it under the intended setup before relying on the laptop.
Using the NPU for development
An NPU does not automatically accelerate ordinary code or every AI task. Microsoft’s developer guidance recommends ONNX Runtime with Qualcomm’s QNN Execution Provider as the current route for targeting the Snapdragon X NPU. The NPU must be specifically supported and targeted by the software. Microsoft describes Copilot+ PCs as requiring an NPU capable of more than 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS); that is a device-class requirement, not a development, editing, or gaming performance benchmark. Gaming: verify the exact title, not just the catalog
Microsoft’s Windows Developer Blog reported on August 25, 2026 that its Works on Windows on Arm catalog contained over 7,000 verified apps and games, based on Microsoft compatibility data. That count shows the catalog is substantial; it does not tell you how well a particular game runs, whether its anti-cheat system or required driver works, or what frame rate and graphics settings a specific Snapdragon laptop can sustain. Check the game’s current compatibility and driver requirements, then look for performance information for the laptop configuration you are considering. A Snapdragon X laptop is a reasonable candidate when your essential software and dependencies are confirmed for its Windows on Arm setup and its configuration meets your workload. If a required game, editing feature, plug-in, or development tool has not been verified, treat that as an open compatibility question—not as a guaranteed yes.
