Yes. GrapheneOS is an Android-based operating system built from the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) that can run without Google apps or services installed. It adds privacy and security features while aiming to preserve everyday usability and app compatibility. The practical trade-offs are important: official support is limited to selected Pixel phones, some apps depend on Google services, and carrier features can vary.
What GrapheneOS replaces—and what it does not
GrapheneOS is a phone operating system based on AOSP, not a separate mobile ecosystem with its own broad catalogue of apps. It does not bundle Google apps or services by default, and it is not an Apple operating system or an iPhone alternative that runs on arbitrary hardware. Its official support is restricted to selected Google Pixel models; check the current supported-device list before buying or installing.

Can you use it without Google services?
Yes. You can use GrapheneOS without installing Google Play. If an app you need relies on Google services, GrapheneOS also supports installing the official Google Play apps as ordinary sandboxed apps rather than granting them the special system privileges they have on many phones. You can install them in a selected user or work profile, keeping them out of other profiles.

The project describes this setup as close to fully functional, with near-complete compatibility for apps that depend on Google Play, but that is not a guarantee for every individual app. Some privileged functionality is unavailable, and a banking, work, streaming, or transit app may impose its own requirements. Choose the setup that fits your apps
- No Google Play: Choose this if your required apps work without Google services and you want to avoid installing them.
- Sandboxed Google Play: Choose this if particular apps need Play services but you want to keep them in a profile you select.

Which phone can run GrapheneOS?
For an officially supported installation, you need a supported Pixel. A Pixel name alone is not enough: verify the exact model on the live support list and confirm that the specific regional or carrier variant can have its bootloader unlocked. Some carrier-sold variants block unlocking.

It also lists five-year minimum guarantees for earlier models such as the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 series. These are support-duration guarantees, not promises that every model will receive identical features. The project’s model-by-model end dates can change, so consult its device-support guidance when choosing a phone.
GrapheneOS recommends buying a supported device and installing the OS yourself. The project says: “Our official recommendation is to buy a supported device and install GrapheneOS yourself.” It does not endorse companies selling preinstalled devices; if you consider one, treat it as an independent seller and verify the phone, installation, bootloader state, and terms yourself. How installation works
GrapheneOS documents two supported installation methods: a WebUSB installer recommended for most users and a command-line process for more technical users. Use the project’s official instructions rather than relying on an unofficial guide that may no longer match the process.

- Confirm eligibility: Check that the exact Pixel model is supported and that its bootloader can be unlocked.
- Back up the phone: Installation changes the device, and relocking the bootloader wipes user data. Do not proceed with data you have not saved elsewhere.
- Follow the official installer: Use the WebUSB installation guide if you want the recommended browser-based process, or the command-line guide if you are comfortable with that method.
- Complete verification and setup: Follow the guide’s verified-boot checks and finish configuring the phone and any apps or profiles you need.
Installation is documented, but it is not risk-free or a one-click change for every device: bootloader eligibility matters, the process requires setup, and the device’s data must be protected beforehand. The full installation overview links to the project’s current procedures.
Updates and carrier service in daily use
GrapheneOS says OS updates are delivered automatically in the background. Ongoing security support still depends on the phone manufacturer providing relevant device updates. The project describes extended-support releases for some devices that have reached end of life as a temporary transition measure, not a substitute for full patch coverage. Check the project’s update FAQ alongside the device’s support status.

For network use, GrapheneOS’s guidance says calls, SMS, MMS, VoLTE, visual voicemail, and 5G are generally supported on carriers that Google officially supports for Pixel stock OS. A feature may not work if the carrier is not supported on stock Pixel software or requires a proprietary app. Wi-Fi calling can vary.
