You can make an iPhone ringtone in GarageBand from an audio file in Files, a downloaded and unprotected song in your Music library, or a GarageBand composition. “Any song” has two important limits: protected Apple Music tracks cannot be used, and exported ringtones can be no longer than 30 seconds.

Before you start: check the audio and length

  • Music-library songs: The track must be downloaded to your iPhone and unprotected. If it appears dimmed in GarageBand, Apple says it is either protected or not downloaded. Protected tracks are unavailable for ringtone creation.
  • Files audio: You can use an audio file accessible through the Files browser in GarageBand.
  • Length: An exported ringtone can be up to 30 seconds. You can trim the passage yourself or let GarageBand shorten a longer selection during export.

Choose a passage that is recognizable on its own. Place the audio at the very beginning of the track; otherwise, leading silence can make the ringtone seem to start late.

Make the ringtone in GarageBand

  1. Open an audio recording project. If GarageBand is installed, touch and hold its Home Screen icon and choose Create New Audio Recording. If it is not installed, install GarageBand first.
  2. Switch to Tracks view. Tap Tracks, choose a track, then open the Loop Browser.
  3. Find the audio. Tap Files to browse audio available through the Files app, including items stored on the iPhone or in iCloud. To use a Music-library song, tap Music; it must be downloaded and unprotected.
  4. Add it to the track. Touch and hold the file or song, then drag it onto the track.
  5. Choose the passage and remove any blank start. Select the audio region and drag its left or right edge to trim it. For finer control, touch and hold an edge to zoom in. Drag the region all the way to the left so the audio begins at the start of the track.
  6. Export from My Songs. Return to My Songs. In the browser, select the project, tap Share, then tap Ringtone. Enter a name and tap Export.

Handle a ringtone longer than 30 seconds

If GarageBand reports that the ringtone is too long, tap Continue to have it shorten the ringtone automatically. To control exactly which part is kept, tap Cancel, return to Tracks view, trim the audio region to 30 seconds or less, and export again.

Why a song may not be available

A dimmed song in GarageBand is either protected or not downloaded, according to Apple. Check that the track is downloaded to the iPhone; if it remains unavailable because it is protected, choose an unprotected audio file or another eligible song instead. Changing the GarageBand project tempo will not change the playback speed of a song imported from the Music app.
