DEWALT’s system description specifically says FLEXVOLT batteries are compatible with 20V MAX power tools. The DCB606 product page describes that model as a 20V/60V MAX FLEXVOLT 6Ah battery with dual-voltage technology. The DCB612 page describes automatic voltage switching and lists compatibility with 20V MAX, 60V MAX, and 120V MAX tools.
What “20V MAX” means
The “MAX” label refers to maximum initial voltage measured without a workload. DEWALT’s footnote gives the nominal voltage as 18V for the 20V MAX system, 54V for 60V MAX, and 108V for 120V MAX. The two numbers describe different measurement conditions; they are not evidence that a FLEXVOLT pack is delivering an unsafe voltage to a 20V MAX tool.

- Identify the tool. Read the label or manual and confirm that it is a DEWALT 20V MAX tool. Do not rely only on a similar-looking battery rail or on the tool’s color.

DCB612 and 20V MAX chargers
DEWALT states on the DCB612 product page that the DCB612 is compatible with all 20V MAX chargers. That statement is specific to that battery and charger family; it should not be generalized to an unidentified charger without checking its documentation.
What the DCB118 documentation says
DEWALT’s DCB118 manual information says that charger is designed for DEWALT 20V MAX lithium-ion and FLEXVOLT battery packs and directs users to the compatibility chart. This makes the DCB118 an example of a charger documented for both types of packs, but the manual remains the controlling source for operating instructions and supported battery models.

Safe charging procedure
- Check the charger model and read its manual or compatibility chart.
- Inspect the battery and charger for cracked housings, damaged terminals, or contamination.
- Connect the charger to its specified power source, then seat the battery as directed by the charger manual.
- Allow the charge cycle to complete in a dry, ventilated location. Do not cover the charger or use a damaged pack.
- If the charger reports a fault or refuses to charge, remove the battery and follow the manual’s diagnostic instructions rather than repeatedly reseating it.
For charger models other than those specifically documented, consult the manual before assuming that a FLEXVOLT pack is supported. Compatibility of the battery with a tool does not by itself prove compatibility with every charger.

DEWALT’s separate adapter documentation describes adapters such as the DCA1820 for enabling 20V batteries on compatible 18V tools. That is a different use case from putting a FLEXVOLT battery into a DEWALT 20V MAX tool. Adding an adapter where none is specified can introduce fit, electrical, warranty, or safety issues, so use the direct battery connection intended for the tool.

Start with documented compatibility
Confirm the exact battery model, tool model, and charger model. The DCB606 and DCB612 have explicit product information in the material covered here; other FLEXVOLT models should be checked against their own manuals and current compatibility charts.
Use capacity as a runtime factor, not a promise
A higher Ah rating generally represents more stored capacity, but runtime depends on the tool’s motor, load, accessory, material, operating pattern, temperature, and battery condition.
