How to Find Out Who Funds a Political Ad Online

Open the ad’s disclosure first and record the exact “Paid for by” name. Then search the platform’s own ad archive and, where relevant, official election-finance records for the jurisdiction. A platform result can help identify the advertiser or payer, but a missing result does not prove the ad never ran—and a payer label may not reveal every organization or donor behind that payer.

Start with the ad itself: who paid for this political ad?

Ad archives are useful, but the disclosure attached to the ad is usually the best first clue. While the ad is still visible, open its information icon, three-dot menu, “Why this ad?” control, or transparency notice. Look for wording such as “Paid for by” and record the name exactly as shown. Do not substitute the Page, account, channel, or publisher name unless the disclosure identifies it as the payer.

Save the platform and the date you saw the ad along with the disclosure. If the ad opens a transparency notice, retain that link or a screenshot too. The ad, archive entry, and official filing can each describe a different role: advertiser, payer, account or Page owner, intermediary, or source of funds. Matching names are a lead, not by themselves proof that two records refer to the same entity.

Take note of the ad itself as well as its label: for example, its wording, format, and the election or issue it appears to concern. Those details can help distinguish a particular ad from another entry with a similar sponsor name. Keep your notes factual; if you cannot tell which election or entity a record concerns, mark that as uncertain rather than filling in the gap.

Where to find the disclosure

  • Facebook and Instagram: open the ad’s disclosure or information controls and note the “Paid for by” name. Meta says political and social-issue ads in its archive include payer disclaimers.
  • YouTube: Google says the “Why this ad?” control provides the disclosure for YouTube ads.
  • Google Search: Google says the disclosure appears on the ad.
  • Google-served display ads: use the AdChoices or “Why this ad?” route when available.

Google notes that in regions where its Election Ads verification requirements apply, verified election advertisers must provide a payer disclosure. For most formats, Google generates the “Paid for by” line from verification information; some formats require the advertiser to place the disclosure in the creative itself. The location and form of a label therefore depend in part on the ad format and region.

Search the platform’s own ad archive

Once you have the disclosed name, search the platform’s archive rather than relying only on a general web search. Use the exact payer name first. If you get no useful result, try the advertiser or Page name shown on the ad as a separate query, and compare the roles recorded in each result. A result under an account name does not automatically establish that the account owner funded the ad.

Keep the search tied to the ad you actually saw. If the archive provides a result that appears relevant, check whether its dates, platform, creative, and disclosure details line up with your observation. A sponsor name by itself may refer to more than one advertiser or campaign. Where the archive identifies the advertiser and payer separately, preserve both labels rather than collapsing them into one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is useful to distinguish an ad archive from a general search result. A search engine may surface a sponsor’s website or a news story about a campaign, but that is not the same as a platform record for the ad. The archive is the appropriate place to look for what that platform records; official filings serve a separate purpose and may use formal entity names or reporting periods.

Facebook and Instagram: Meta Ad Library

Meta’s Ad Library is searchable and covers political and social-issue ads that run on Facebook and Instagram. Meta says these ads are retained for seven years and carry “Paid for by” disclaimers. For U.S. advertisers, Meta says additional information may be required, such as an FEC ID or Tax-ID number. Use the disclosed payer as the primary search term, then inspect the ad details and any available transparency information rather than treating a similar Page name as a confirmed match.

Meta’s May 24, 2018 announcement, updated May 21, 2025, described the U.S. archive this way: “People visiting the archive can see and search ads with political or issue content an advertiser has run in the US for up to seven years.” That retention period is a window, not a guarantee that an ad will remain available indefinitely.

The archive is not permanent. In an update dated May 21, 2025, Meta said the first political, election, and social-issue ads to reach the end of the seven-year retention period would begin leaving the Ad Library, its API, and the Ad Library Report on May 24, 2025. Removal is rolling, so an older ad may no longer appear even if it once did. Search promptly when the ad matters to a current question, and preserve the record you find.

Meta also provides confirmed Page-owner and location information as separate transparency details. These can help you understand a Page, but they do not by themselves prove that the owner paid for a specific ad. Treat the owner details as context and the payer disclaimer as the lead for identifying the disclosed funding entity.

Google Search and YouTube: Google Ads Transparency Center and political-ad report

For Google and YouTube, search the Google Ads Transparency Center or Google’s Political Advertising Transparency Report. These are public resources, but the political-ad report has a defined scope: Google says it includes ads covered by its Election Ads policy and run by verified election advertisers. It is not a complete index of political speech, every paid attempt to persuade, or every advertiser that has not completed verification.

Google’s verification process is advertiser-side. Its help material says an application may involve two steps, and each step can take up to five business days. The regions where the process applies and the requirements depend on the region targeted. This timing is not a lookup estimate for someone searching the archive; it helps explain why eligibility and disclosure can vary by location and verification status.

That distinction matters when interpreting a search with no result. The report’s scope is determined by Google’s Election Ads policy and advertiser verification, not by whether a viewer regards a particular message as political. An absent entry therefore says only that you did not find a matching record in that resource; it does not establish that no paid ad appeared on Google or YouTube.

Check the relevant election-finance records

An ad disclosure gives you a name to investigate; official election records can provide a different kind of evidence. Search the exact disclosed name in the official campaign-disclosure or election-finance resource for the election and jurisdiction involved. Compare the record’s legal name, role, dates, and reporting context with the ad notice before deciding that the records describe the same payer.

Begin by identifying the jurisdiction: a federal election, a state or local contest, or a political advertisement subject to EU rules can point to different official resources. Then identify the election or referendum and the dates that matter. A legal resource, a campaign-finance filing database, and an ad-transparency archive are different record types; do not assume that one can answer every question addressed by the others.

For U.S. federal elections

The Federal Election Commission (FEC) provides searchable federal statutes, regulations, Commission actions, and cases. Its legal-resource pages are useful for federal legal context; they are not a comprehensive filing search for every state or local contest. For a state or local election, check the relevant state or local election authority’s disclosure resources. Do not treat an FEC result—or lack of one—as a universal answer about a nonfederal ad.

When an FEC resource returns a name or legal material, check what kind of record it is before using it to describe a particular ad. The FEC’s legal materials can help with federal legal context, but the existence of a relevant law, action, or case does not by itself connect a named person or organization to the ad you saw. State and local disclosure systems are separate considerations when the election is not federal.

For European Union political advertising

Regulation (EU) 2024/900 entered into full application on October 10, 2025, according to the European Commission. The Commission says paid and/or targeted political advertisements in the EU must be labeled and provide key information, including the sponsor, the related election or referendum, the amount paid, and targeting information. The regulation concerns transparency and targeting; the Commission says it does not regulate the content of political ads.

As of October 13, 2026, the Commission described its public European Repository for online political advertisements as a pilot available for voluntary use. The repository is intended to make political ads and transparency notices accessible. The Commission says notices can identify the sponsor, controlling entity, paying entity, amounts spent, funding origin, dissemination period, and targeting or ad-delivery information. Because the pilot’s availability and completeness are developing, check both the ad’s own notice and the repository rather than assuming either one contains every relevant record.

The Commission announced the voluntary pilot on October 12, 2026. Its developing status matters: do not treat the presence of a record as proof that the repository contains every relevant ad, or the absence of a record as proof that no ad ran. Compare what the notice says with the ad itself, and preserve the date you checked the repository.

How to compare an ad disclosure with an archive or filing

When more than one record appears, compare the underlying details instead of relying on a name alone. A political committee, nonprofit, agency, and social-media Page can have similar names while playing distinct roles. Keep the ad-level disclosure separate from a formal campaign-finance filing: one identifies information attached to a particular ad, while the other is a filing made under the rules of a jurisdiction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Jurisdiction: Is the record about a federal, state, local, or EU matter? The rules and filing systems differ.
  • Platform: Does it document an ad on the platform where you saw it, or a filing outside that platform?
  • Entity role: Does the record name a payer, advertiser, account owner, controlling entity, or intermediary?
  • Date and archive period: Does the record cover the time the ad ran? Has it aged out of a platform archive?
  • Record type: Is it the ad’s own transparency notice or an official campaign-finance filing? Do not treat the two as interchangeable.

If the names differ, look for a record that explicitly connects them, such as a transparency notice identifying a paying entity or a filing that describes the organization’s role. If no record establishes the connection, report the names and roles separately rather than asserting that one entity funded the other.

Make the comparison in a repeatable order. First, match the platform and date range. Second, compare the exact disclosed sponsor name with the archive’s payer or advertiser field. Third, check whether another entity is separately listed as the account owner, controlling entity, or intermediary. Finally, compare the official record’s jurisdiction, legal name, role, and reporting period. This avoids turning a close spelling match into an unsupported identification.

For example, if an ad shows a “Paid for by” name that differs from the Page name, preserve both names and their roles. Search the disclosed payer first; search the Page separately only to find whether the archive or a filing explicitly connects it to the payer. If the records do not make that connection, the sound conclusion is that the ad displayed one name and appeared through another—not that the Page owner necessarily funded it.

What a result—or no result—can establish

A “Paid for by” line or transparency notice is the strongest immediate lead about the payer of the ad you saw. A platform archive can help confirm that the platform recorded an ad associated with a particular advertiser or payer under its own rules. Neither necessarily provides a complete map of who ultimately supplied the organization’s money.

Likewise, an absent listing is not proof that no ad ran or that the visible account paid for it. The archive may not cover the ad’s platform, jurisdiction, format, eligibility category, or date; an older Meta item may have passed its retention period; or a Google political-ad report may not include an ad outside its verified-advertiser and policy scope. A negative search result should be described narrowly: you did not find a matching entry in that archive using that query on that date.

A disclosure answers a specific question: what payer name was presented with this ad? An archive can add platform-specific information about an ad or advertiser. An official filing can show information reported under the applicable jurisdiction’s rules. These records may complement one another, but they are not interchangeable, and none of the cited platform labels claims to identify every upstream donor behind an organization.

If your search returns nothing

  1. Recheck the ad disclosure. Verify the spelling and punctuation of the payer name, and distinguish it from the Page, channel, or account name.
  2. Search the payer and advertiser separately. Try the exact disclosed name first, then the advertiser or account name as a distinct query. Do not assume they are the same entity.
  3. Confirm the archive matches the platform. A Facebook or Instagram ad belongs in Meta’s archive route; a Google or YouTube ad belongs in Google’s transparency resources.
  4. Check the date and archive scope. Meta’s older ads leave after seven years on a rolling basis. Google’s political report covers only in-scope ads run by verified election advertisers.
  5. Move to the appropriate official authority. Search the relevant federal, state, local, or EU source for the election involved. An official record may use a legal name or entity role that differs from the ad label.
  6. Preserve what you did find. Keep a screenshot or written note of the ad and disclosure, your archive query, the result, and the date checked. This makes the limits of a later comparison clear.

When documenting a null search, record the archive and exact term used, not just “no results.” If you later check a second spelling or a different resource, keep those queries distinct. This makes it clear whether the lack of a match was limited to one search or persisted across the platform and the relevant official source.

What “Paid for by” means—and what it does not

The phrase identifies the payer disclosed for an ad, making it the right name to follow into platform and official records. It does not necessarily name the person who created the ad, the operator of the account that displayed it, or every upstream source of the payer’s funds. The platform materials described here identify disclosed payers and advertisers; they do not claim that a label reveals every donor behind an organization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep conclusions proportional to the record. If an ad names Organization A, you can say that the ad disclosed Organization A as its payer. You should not infer from that label alone that a particular individual, related organization, or account owner supplied the money.

It also helps to use careful verbs. Say a platform archive “lists” or “records” an advertiser when that is what the entry does; say an ad “discloses” a payer when the label does. Reserve a stronger claim about who funded an ad for a record that actually supports that connection. The distinction is especially important when the ad’s account name and payer name differ.

Save a useful record of your search

Online ads and archive entries can change or disappear, so make a compact record as you investigate. Include the ad screenshot or notice, exact sponsor wording, platform, date observed, archive used, search term, result, and date checked. If you consult an official filing, note its jurisdiction and the role it assigns to the entity. A dated record lets someone else distinguish what the ad said from what a later archive or filing shows.

Meta’s seven-year retention window and Google’s eligibility-limited political report make this especially important: an archive is a time- and policy-bounded record, not a permanent, universal ledger of online political persuasion.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find out who paid for an online political ad?

Open the ad’s disclosure or transparency control and record the exact “Paid for by” name. Then search that name in the archive for the platform where you saw the ad and, if needed, in the official election-finance resource for the relevant jurisdiction. Keep the advertiser, account owner, and payer distinct if the records label them separately.

Where can I look up political ads on Facebook or Instagram?

Use Meta’s searchable Ad Library and begin with the exact payer name shown on the ad. Meta says its political and social-issue ads are retained for seven years. Older entries leave on a rolling basis, so a missing result does not show that the ad never ran.

How do I see who paid for a YouTube political ad?

Open the ad’s “Why this ad?” control to find the disclosure, then search Google’s Ads Transparency Center or Political Advertising Transparency Report. Google says its political report includes only ads covered by its Election Ads policy and run by verified election advertisers, so it is not a complete index of all political advertising.

What does “Paid for by” mean on an online ad?

It identifies the payer disclosed for that ad and gives you the name to investigate. It does not necessarily identify the ad’s creator, the owner of the account that displayed it, or every upstream source of the payer’s funds.

Why can’t I find an old political ad in an ad library?

Archives have limits. Meta removes entries after seven years on a rolling basis, with the first ads reaching that period beginning to leave on May 24, 2025. Google’s political-ad report is limited to ads within its policy scope run by verified election advertisers. A missing result should be reported as a missing match in that archive for the query and date checked—not proof the ad did not exist.

Does a missing archive result prove no political ad ran?

No. The ad may fall outside the archive’s platform, policy, verification, jurisdiction, or date coverage, or an older Meta entry may have aged out. Recheck the disclosure, search the payer and advertiser separately, and consult the appropriate official authority before drawing a conclusion.

The Bottom Line

Start with the ad’s own “Paid for by” disclosure, then search the matching platform archive and the relevant official election records. Record the exact names, roles, query, and date. A result can identify a disclosed payer, but an absent entry—or a payer label alone—cannot establish the full funding chain.
