Yes—using a custom keyboard on Android can be safe, but enabling one gives it access to the text-entry process. Android’s keyboard APIs let an active input method interact with the focused text field. That capability does not, by itself, prove the keyboard records or sends what you type. Choose a keyboard from a developer you trust, check its current disclosures and permissions, and disable features you do not need.
What can an Android keyboard see?
Android treats software keyboards as input method editors (IMEs). The active keyboard communicates with the focused app through an InputConnection. Depending on the editor and the API calls involved, it can send text to the field and retrieve text around the cursor or extracted editor text. Android describes the capability; it does not establish what any particular keyboard logs, retains, or transmits.

So the answer to “does a keyboard only see what I type?” is not a blanket yes or no. An active keyboard can interact with the focused editor, but what information is available depends on the editor and the interaction. Access is not evidence of collection or sharing: those claims require evidence about the specific app.

No. Selecting an IME does not automatically grant it access to every protected Android resource. Features that use sensitive devices or data—such as microphone, camera, GPS, or contacts—are governed by Android permissions. A microphone permission may be relevant to voice typing, but it does not by itself show that the keyboard collects typed text. Android’s app security guidance describes permission-gated access, and its privacy settings information points users to permission controls and app disclosures.

What about clipboard access?
Android’s documentation for Android 10 and later says an app cannot access clipboard data unless it is the default IME or the app currently in focus. That makes the default keyboard an explicit exception to the clipboard restriction. The rule is version-specific; check the Android version on your device for the applicable behavior and settings. Are password fields protected from custom keyboards?
Android editor metadata can signal that a field is a password field. The InputMethodService documentation describes how an input method can inspect editor information, and Android’s input-type guidance recommends marking password text fields with textPassword.

This is platform signaling, not a universal guarantee that every keyboard stops processing all sensitive input or that every app handles password fields identically. For especially sensitive entries, use a keyboard you trust, turn off unnecessary connected features, and use a password manager’s autofill when available.
How to assess a custom keyboard before using it
- Check who publishes it and where you got it. Prefer an identifiable developer and a verifiable installation source. Be cautious with unknown publishers or sideloaded packages.
- Read its current Google Play Data safety section. Compare the declared collection, use, and sharing with the keyboard’s features. These disclosures are useful evidence, not a complete audit of the app’s behavior at runtime.
- Review Android permissions. Ask whether each permission fits a feature you want. For example, microphone access may support voice typing; unrelated sensitive permissions deserve scrutiny.
- Read the keyboard’s privacy policy. Look for what it says about typed text, personalization, diagnostics, retention, and sharing. Neither a permission list nor the keyboard’s role alone proves collection or non-collection.
- Disable optional features you do not use. Check for voice input, cloud sync, or personalization settings, if offered.
- Use Android’s privacy controls. Permission Manager, Privacy Dashboard, and microphone or camera indicators can help you review sensitive access. Their availability and presentation can vary by Android version and device.
What Google says about Gboard
Google’s Pixel safety page describes Gboard’s use of federated learning to improve autocorrect and suggestions. Google says information learned may be sent to Google services without including what the user typed or spoke. Do default keyboard apps spy on users?
“Spy” is too broad to answer from the fact that an app is a keyboard. Android gives the active keyboard technical access to interact with the focused editor, but that alone does not show whether a particular app records or transmits input. To assess a named keyboard, check its current policy, Play Store disclosures, permissions, and settings; do not infer its practices from the platform capability alone.
