What determines whether a controller works?
There are two separate compatibility checks: whether your phone can connect to the controller, and whether the game accepts controller input. A phone recognizing a controller confirms only the connection; it does not establish that a particular game supports it.

Support can also vary by device. Epic says Fortnite supports external controllers on mobile, while warning that some devices may not be compatible. Check the target game’s current support information and your phone and controller makers’ compatibility guidance rather than assuming that one setup works across all games.
How to connect and set up a controller
- Check the game. Look at its current support information or control settings for controller input before troubleshooting the phone connection.
- Check the hardware. Confirm that the controller supports your phone’s operating system and connector. If it mounts onto the phone, check the fit and case clearance; for a wired setup, check whether an adapter is required.
- Pair or connect it. On iPhone, put a Bluetooth controller into discovery mode using its instructions. Open Settings > Bluetooth and select the controller. A compatible wired controller can also connect; follow its maker’s instructions and check whether your particular phone-and-controller combination needs an adapter.
- Open the game and check its controls. Some games require you to complete a tutorial or switch from touchscreen controls in the game’s settings before controller input works.
- Troubleshoot recognition. Update the phone, game, and controller software, then check the device maker’s compatibility guidance. On Apple devices, Apple also recommends forgetting the controller and pairing it again, and reducing the number of connected Bluetooth devices.
Apple documents Bluetooth and wired controller connections for iPhone, but says available buttons and controller features vary by controller and app. For Android, confirm the exact phone, controller, and game combination with their respective makers; the available guidance does not establish a universal setup procedure for all Android phones.

Native game support, touch mapping, and streaming are different
Native controller support
With native support, the game itself recognizes controller input. This is the most direct route: check the game’s settings or support page, then follow any in-game setup steps.
Touch mapping is a limited workaround
Backbone describes TouchSync, which maps controller inputs to screen touch points. The company’s documentation limits it to Android devices using current Backbone software with an active Backbone+ subscription. It is a vendor-specific option, not evidence that every game supports mapping or that mapped input behaves like native controller support.

Remote play and cloud gaming stream a game
Streaming a game to a phone is a separate play path from running a mobile game on the phone. It can involve service and account requirements, an internet connection, and—in remote play from a console—the console itself. PlayStation’s May 2023 announcement said PS Remote Play on a mobile device required a PS4 or PS5, the PS Remote Play app, a PlayStation Network account, and broadband internet. It listed 5 Mbps as the minimum and recommended at least 15 Mbps; these are figures from that dated announcement, not a guarantee of today’s requirements.

Before buying, verify that the specific controller suits your phone and the games you intend to play. A mobile game controller for iPhone or Android may connect by Bluetooth or use a physical phone connector; models that mount to the phone also need to fit its dimensions and case. Check required adapters, game-level support, and whether features such as button customization vary by controller or app. Neither phone connectivity nor a controller’s mobile compatibility guarantees support in every game.
