Can You Use a Bluetooth Tracker to Find Someone Without Their Consent?

Google and Apple prohibit using their tracking networks to monitor people without consent. Here’s how Android and Apple alerts work and how to respond safely.

No. Bluetooth trackers are intended to help locate belongings, not people. Google’s Find Hub policy expressly prohibits using it to track people or property without their knowledge and consent. Apple says its tracking products should not be used to track people and describes non-consensual tracking as a crime in many countries and regions. The precise law and consequences depend on where you are and the circumstances.

Why tracking someone without consent is not allowed

A Bluetooth tracker can communicate its location through nearby devices in a finding network. That capability does not make it appropriate to hide a tracker on someone, in their belongings, or in a vehicle to monitor their movements.

Google’s Find Hub Acceptable Use Policy says: “You may not use Google Find Hub to track people or track property that does not belong to you.” Apple likewise says AirTags, Find My network accessories, and associated products “should not be used to track people” or property that does not belong to you, and notes that non-consensual tracking is a crime in many countries and regions. Neither statement establishes one universal criminal charge or penalty; local law and the facts matter.

What to do if your phone warns you about a tracker

Do not assume an alert identifies who owns the tracker or proves why it is nearby. Use the alert’s map and locating options, and consider your immediate safety before taking action.

Coin or tool not included.
  1. Go somewhere safe if you feel at risk. Choose a public place and contact law enforcement or someone you trust. If a partner or another person may pose a threat, consider a safety plan before confronting them or disabling a device.
  2. Open the alert and review its map. Google says the map can show places where the tracker was detected moving with you. It does not show where the owner checked the tracker’s location.
  3. Use the phone’s locating steps. Google’s Android guidance recommends playing a sound and following the alert’s on-screen instructions. Playing a sound does not notify the owner, according to Google.
  4. Keep relevant information if it is safe to do so. Preserve the alert and map details, along with information about the device, if appropriate for your circumstances.
  5. Disable the tracker using its maker’s instructions. Turning off Bluetooth or Location Services on your phone, or enabling airplane mode, does not stop the tracker itself from sharing its location. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions instead.

Google’s Android Help instructions for finding unknown trackers explain the alert map, sound, and next steps. Apple’s unwanted-tracking alert guidance covers locating and responding to an AirTag, AirPods, a Find My network accessory, or a compatible Bluetooth tracking device.

How Android and Apple unwanted-tracker alerts work

Both platforms describe automatic alerts and ways to check for certain unwanted trackers. Their protections have compatibility and timing limits, so an alert system should not be treated as a guarantee that every tracker will be found immediately.

Platform Eligibility and supported devices Automatic alerts and manual checks Response guidance
Android Google says Unknown tracker alerts are available on Android 6 and later. Its help page currently lists Find Hub-compatible tags, headphones, and Apple AirTags as supported. Automatic alerts may take time: Google says the device needs to move with the tracker over time. Alerts are currently limited to one per tracker each day; a manual scan can help check again. Google says the scan can find certain trackers nearby and separated from their owners, which may mean a tracker is misplaced rather than following you. Open the alert map, play a sound, and follow the on-screen steps. Google says a sound does not notify the owner. Phone Bluetooth, Location Services, or airplane-mode settings do not disable the tracker.
Apple Apple’s guidance covers AirTags, AirPods, Find My network accessories, and compatible Bluetooth location-tracking devices. It also says Android 6.0 or later can automatically notify users about an AirTag or another item tracker moving with them. Apple describes automatic notifications and manual scanning on supported devices. Its support page lists operating-system, Location Services, Significant Locations, Bluetooth, notification, and airplane-mode conditions for notifications. Follow Apple’s alert instructions to locate the device and take the available steps to disable it. If you feel unsafe, go to a safe public location and contact law enforcement.

Google says the detection process considers multiple factors and may not alert immediately. Its help page also says detection data is processed and temporarily stored in encrypted form on-device, rather than shared with Google or other users. Apple’s notification requirements mean that settings or device compatibility can affect whether an alert appears.

What an alert can and cannot tell you

  • It can show a possible unwanted tracker. A notification may indicate that a compatible tracker has been moving with you.
  • It may not arrive right away. Google says the system needs the person to move with a tracker over time and considers multiple factors.
  • A manual scan is not proof of stalking. It can detect certain nearby trackers separated from their owners; that can happen when an item is lost or misplaced.
  • The map is not an owner-activity history. Google says the map shows detections while the tracker moved with you, not where its owner checked the location.
  • It does not cover every tracker or situation. The platform documentation describes compatible devices and conditions; it does not promise detection of every Bluetooth tracker.

Can you use one to track a family member or another person?

Do not use a tracker to monitor a person without their knowledge and consent. Google’s policy explicitly bars tracking people through Find Hub without consent, and Apple says its products should not be used to track people. These platform rules are separate from the legal analysis: whether conduct violates a particular law depends on the jurisdiction and facts.
