Yes, but only if the service accepts a list of images in a single request. A hosted upscaling API can process images without you installing or managing a GPU, but that does not automatically make its endpoint a batch API. The official Upscayl and Ximilar documentation reviewed for this article describes one image per task or request. For those services, a batch means your code submits and tracks a separate job for each image.
What “one API call” can mean
The phrase can describe two different workflows:
- One request containing a list: You send several image URLs or files in one request, and the service handles the batch. This is the literal one-call option.
- One batch operation in your application: Your code accepts a list, then submits one request per image to an API that processes images individually. This can be convenient to run, but it is not one request to the upscaling provider.
Check the request schema before choosing a service. Upscayl documents a POST /api/v1/upscales that creates one image task. Ximilar’s documentation says its records list must contain exactly one image, even though it describes the upscaler as useful for bulk work. In both cases, your software must orchestrate multiple requests to process a list.

Which approaches support a batch workflow?
| Option | Batch behavior | Scaling and processing | Operational details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upscayl API | One image task per POST; submit a task for each image in your batch. | 2x or 4x; asynchronous. | Requires a public HTTPS image URL. Poll the returned task URL for status. Idempotency keys support safe retries of the same logical request. The documentation accessed in 2026 lists 0.7 credit per successfully upscaled image and says failed tasks are refunded. Customer webhooks are not described in the documentation reviewed. |
| Ximilar Image Upscaler | Exactly one image per request; send multiple requests for a list. | 2x, 4x or 8x; Classic or GAN model; asynchronous. | Accepts an image URL or base64 input. Use an optional webhook or poll for completion. Pricing is based on output size, and EXIF data is not preserved. Its 2026 documentation gives an example of 25–30 credits for an “Upscale XS” operation, equating a 500px image upscaled 2x with a 250px image upscaled 4x for that output-size tier. |
| Apify actor described in the title-matched DEV Community article | The article’s search excerpt describes a list of image URLs as input and one result per image, stored in a dataset. | The excerpt describes 2x or 4x using SeedVR2. | The article author discloses maintaining the actor. The page itself was not accessible for verification, so confirm its current schema, limits, costs, output mapping and failure behavior before relying on it. |
| Runway Image Precision Upscaler V2 endpoint | List or batch request behavior was not established by the accessible listing. | The listing identifies upscaling up to 16x and a 4x interface selection. | The opened endpoint page did not provide readable documentation details. Do not assume it accepts a list in one request without checking its current endpoint reference. |
The credit figures above are provider-published units and examples, not independent price or performance comparisons. Upscaling factors describe output enlargement; they do not establish a common quality benchmark or guarantee recovery of original image detail.

If each provider request handles one image, build a small queue around it. The queue makes the overall workflow manageable while preserving the provider’s actual per-image request model.
#1 Best Overall
- ✔️ AI Upscaling up to 8K: Enlarge small, low-resolution, or old photos with crisp details, clean edges, and fewer artifacts — perfect for prints, social media, blogs, and online galleries.
- ✔️ Fix blurry or noisy photos: AI restores clarity by enhancing textures, sharpening faces, hair, and fine details while reducing noise and JPEG compression errors.
- ✔️ Ideal for family photos, scans & mobile images: Improve pictures from smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, scanners, and old archives with professional-quality results.
- ✔️ Fast & easy 1-click enhancement: Batch-process multiple photos at once and improve image quality instantly — no editing experience required.
- ✔️ Reliable results & broad file support: Works with JPG, PNG, TIFF and more — stable AI processing even on old, compressed or damaged photos.
- Prepare accessible inputs. For Upscayl, provide a public HTTPS image URL. Ximilar also documents URL or base64 input. Check the current provider documentation for image size and format constraints before sending production files.
- Submit one task per image. Record each input’s identifier alongside the task ID returned by the provider. Keep this mapping so results and failures can be tied back to the right source image.
- Make retries safe. For Upscayl, use a stable idempotency key for the same logical image request and preserve the parameters when retrying. Its documentation describes idempotency keys for this purpose. Do not assume another provider has the same retry contract.
- Track asynchronous completion. Upscayl returns an accepted task and supports polling its task URL. Ximilar supports polling or an optional webhook. Use the delivery method the provider documents, and avoid treating successful submission as completed image processing.
- Save successful outputs in storage you control. Store the result against the original image identifier, and capture failures separately so one unsuccessful task does not obscure the status of the rest of the batch.
- Review billing and failure handling. Tie cost estimates to the provider’s billing unit and output-size rules. Upscayl’s documentation says failed tasks are refunded; do not apply that policy to other services.
Keep API credentials on a server or other protected backend, not in browser code. If you are building a list-accepting wrapper, verify its current maximum list length, output-to-input mapping, per-image error reporting, billing, and result retention before putting it into a production pipeline.

“Bulk” and “no GPU” do not answer the practical questions that determine whether an API fits your workflow. Confirm the current documentation for each service you are considering:
- Whether a request accepts multiple images or exactly one.
- Maximum image dimensions, file size, supported formats and input method.
- Available scale factors and model or quality controls.
- How asynchronous tasks report status: polling, webhooks or both.
- Whether retries can create duplicate work, and whether idempotency is supported.
- How long input and output files are retained, and whether metadata such as EXIF is preserved.
- What billing is based on, including output size or successful tasks, and how failed work is handled.
A hosted API avoids operating local GPU hardware for inference, but it still requires network access, task management and a destination for results. The precise image limits, retention terms and billing rules can change, so verify them in the provider’s current documentation before committing a pipeline.
