There Are 166.6 Million Registered .Com Domains—but Not That Many Websites

There were 166.6 million registered .com domain names at the end of June 2026, according to VeriSign. That is a count of registrations—not a count of distinct, active .com websites.

What does the 166.6 million figure count?

VeriSign reported 166.6 million .com domain-name registrations as of June 30, 2026. The figure is a quarter-end snapshot, published on July 23, 2026, rather than a live count. It measures names registered in the .com domain, not whether each name points to a functioning website.

For context, VeriSign reported these separate totals for the same quarter-end:

Measure Registrations Scope and date
.com 166.6 million As of June 30, 2026
.com and .net combined 179.1 million As of June 30, 2026
All top-level domains (TLDs) 401.6 million As of June 30, 2026

These figures come from VeriSign’s Q2 2026 domain-name industry brief. The .com-only count is the relevant one for this question; the .com-and-.net total and the all-TLD total cover broader scopes.

Why isn’t that the number of .com websites?

A registered domain name and a website are different things. A name can be registered without hosting a public website, and the registration count does not establish whether a name resolves to a unique, maintained, publicly accessible site. The 166.6 million figure therefore cannot tell you how many active .com websites exist.

Web-survey counts measure a different unit. Netcraft’s July 2026 Web Server Survey reported 1,494,915,628 sites across 305,348,459 domains. Those are survey-wide totals, not a .com-only count, so they cannot be used to calculate the number of .com websites. Netcraft’s Web Server Survey provides the survey figures and context.

Which number should you use?

  • For registered .com names, use VeriSign’s dated figure: 166.6 million as of June 30, 2026.
  • For the number of active .com websites, the cited registration and survey totals do not establish a reliable count.
  • When comparing statistics, check the measure (registrations or surveyed sites), the scope (.com, .com plus .net, or all TLDs), and the date.
