What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Yes, usually—but not as one giant file. MBOX is a local container holding many individual email messages. IMAP does not provide an “upload MBOX” command. An email client or migration tool must read the container, parse each message, and submit messages one at a time with IMAP’s APPEND command. The practical limits are therefore message size, destination quota, provider throttling, authentication, message count, and the importer’s ability to resume and report failures—not simply the MBOX file’s total size.
Why a large MBOX is not the same as a large email
A 20 GB MBOX might contain hundreds of thousands of modest messages and migrate successfully. A 2 GB archive might contain a few attachment-heavy messages that exceed the destination’s per-message limit. IMAP evaluates uploaded messages individually; the total MBOX size is mainly a local processing and storage concern.

Attachment size also changes during email transport. MIME and base64 encoding mean an attachment’s size on disk is not necessarily the final size of the complete message. The destination’s total mailbox quota is a separate limit from its maximum accepted message size.

Does IMAP support MBOX directly?
No. The IMAP specification defines APPEND for adding a complete message to a selected server mailbox, not for transferring an MBOX container. See RFC 9051.

- Open the MBOX locally.
- Find each message boundary and parse the message.
- Select or create the destination folder.
- Send the message with
APPEND. - Apply supported flags and, where possible, the original internal date.
If the server advertises the APPENDLIMIT capability, it reports a maximum message size; an oversized upload can receive a TOOBIG response. See RFC 7889. Absence of APPENDLIMIT does not mean unlimited uploads: the server may enforce another documented or undisclosed limit.
What limits determine whether the migration succeeds?
| Limit | What it affects |
|---|---|
| Per-message size | An individual email over the server or service limit is rejected. |
| Mailbox quota | The migration stops when destination storage is full. |
| Folder or item-count limit | A very large folder may fail or become difficult to operate. |
| Bandwidth and rate limits | Bulk uploads may be slowed, disconnected, or temporarily blocked. |
| Connection limit | Too many parallel workers can cause authentication or session failures. |
| Attachment and content policy | Blocked file types or security rules can reject otherwise valid mail. |
| Authentication policy | Password IMAP may be disabled; OAuth 2.0 or an app password may be required. |
| Duplicate handling | Retrying a completed batch can create duplicates unless the tool tracks them. |
| Retention and archiving rules | Server policies may move, quarantine, or delete imported messages. |
For Microsoft 365’s native IMAP migration service, Microsoft documents a maximum of 500,000 messages per mailbox and a 35 MB maximum message size. Those figures apply to that service, not to IMAP generally; see Microsoft’s documentation.
Google’s documented migration service says most attachments are imported unless the complete message plus attachment exceeds 25 MB or Gmail blocks the attachment type. That is a Google import condition, not a universal IMAP limit. See Google Workspace’s guidance.

The safest workflow for a very large archive
- Preserve the source. Make a verified backup and do not modify the original MBOX during migration.
- Check the destination first. Confirm quota, per-message limits, folder rules, authentication method, and any provider migration restrictions.
- Run a pilot. Import 100–1,000 messages containing plain text, HTML, attachments, replies, forwarded mail, non-English characters, unusual headers, and at least one nested folder. Include messages near the size limit.
- Validate the pilot. Compare counts and check dates, sender and recipient fields, attachments, read/unread state, flags, folder placement, a distinctive subject, and a known
Message-ID. Verify the messages in the provider’s web and mobile interfaces. - Batch the archive. Use folder, date-range, message-count, or approximate-size batches. Start small and use one or a few connections until the provider’s behavior is known.
- Log checkpoints. Record source folder, message range, start and finish times, successes, failures, and oversized messages.
- Upload and monitor. Keep the client or job running, but pause if the provider reports throttling, temporary blocks, or repeated authentication failures.
- Retry selectively. Retry only failed folders or batches, not the entire archive.
- Reconcile independently. Compare source and destination counts and search for known messages. A “completed” client status alone is not proof of completeness.
Google advises against large IMAP drag-and-drop or copy operations for migration and recommends supported migration options. See Google’s IMAP migration guidance.
Method 1: Use a desktop mail client
A client such as Thunderbird can open local MBOX data, connect to the destination account, and copy messages into IMAP folders. Mozilla documents general import and export functions, while exact controls can vary by Thunderbird version and installed extensions: Thunderbird import documentation.
When it is appropriate
- The archive is small or moderately large.
- You can monitor the process and have sufficient local disk space.
- The destination accepts ordinary IMAP uploads.
- Messages do not contain many unusually large attachments.
Operational weaknesses
- Local indexes may need rebuilding and large folders can become slow.
- Network interruptions may leave the completion point unclear.
- A failed message can cause repeated retries.
- Repeating a copy can create duplicates.
- Provider throttling can stretch the job over many hours or days.
Method 2: Use dedicated MBOX-to-IMAP software
For hundreds of thousands of messages or many folders, look for MBOX parsing, folder mapping, small-batch controls, resumable checkpoints, duplicate detection, per-message error logs, oversized-message reporting, OAuth or app-password support, preview or dry-run mode, and exportable reports.

For example, the 4n6 MBOX to IMAP listing advertised a free trial and features such as folder mapping and preview when reviewed. Treat vendor claims such as “limitless” as marketing, not a promise that a destination server’s hard limits can be bypassed. Test a representative pilot before paying for a full migration.

Method 3: Provider migration services
Google Workspace
Google’s data migration service is designed for supported sources such as an accessible IMAP account, not as a native local-MBOX uploader. A local archive may need to be loaded into a temporary IMAP account or processed by compatible software first. Google also warns about bulk IMAP operations and bandwidth limits; see its bandwidth guidance.
Microsoft 365
Microsoft’s native IMAP migration is intended for a live IMAP source. It is not a direct local-MBOX import path. Messages above 35 MB or mailboxes above 500,000 items exceed the documented limits for that service. Microsoft also states that this migration moves email folders, not contacts, calendars, or tasks; see the service documentation.

Should you split the MBOX?
Often, yes. Split it with an MBOX-aware tool that preserves complete message boundaries, headers, MIME parts, and folder identity. Useful strategies include splitting by original folder, date range, message count, approximate batch size, or a separate set of problematic messages.
Splitting reduces local indexing work and limits the scope of retries; it does not reduce an individual email’s size or increase destination quota. Do not use a text editor, arbitrary byte splitter, or manually deleted separator lines: those methods can corrupt messages.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Messages that exceed the destination limit
Isolate oversized messages in a review set. Depending on business and retention requirements, leave them in the local archive, use a provider-supported API or archive mechanism, store attachments separately, or move them to a dedicated archive system. Removing attachments changes the message, and no third-party tool can make an ordinary IMAP server accept a message it hard-rejects.

Metadata that may change
Most importers can carry standard headers such as From, To, Cc, Subject, and Date, plus the body and attachments. Folder placement, read state, flags, and the IMAP internal date depend on the client and server.
Gmail labels may not map cleanly to folders. Stars, categories, provider-specific tags, threading, drafts, and custom flags can be lost or altered. The message’s Date header and the server’s internal date are distinct, so test sorting by both before the full run.
Troubleshooting partial or failed migrations
| Symptom | Likely causes | Action |
|---|---|---|
| “The MBOX is too large” | Importer indexing, temporary disk space, corruption, or a product limit. | Validate the archive, ensure free space, split it safely, and retry in batches. |
| Only some messages arrived | Oversized messages, a corrupt record, timeout, throttling, quota, or skipped duplicates. | Use logs and count comparisons; isolate and retry the failed range. |
| The upload keeps restarting | No checkpoints, a failing message, closed sessions, index rebuilds, or provider restrictions. | Use smaller batches, lower concurrency, and resumable software. |
| Messages are duplicated | Repeating a copy, label-to-folder mapping, multiple migration methods, or weak duplicate keys. | Stop broad retries; use a migration log and duplicate-aware tooling. |
| Dates changed | Header date and IMAP internal date were handled differently. | Test both date views and configure the importer to preserve internal dates when supported. |
| Authentication errors | Password IMAP is disabled, OAuth is required, or an app password is needed. | Re-authenticate using the provider’s supported method. |
| Large messages fail after long uploads | No advertised APPENDLIMIT or a server-side limit discovered only after transmission. |
Pre-screen message sizes and isolate oversized mail before retrying. |
How to choose the method
| Situation | Most suitable approach | Main caution |
|---|---|---|
| Small or moderate archive | Desktop mail client | Monitor duplicates, retries, and quota. |
| Many folders or hundreds of thousands of messages | Resumable MBOX migration utility | Validate vendor behavior with a pilot. |
| Google Workspace with a live IMAP source | Google’s supported migration service | It is not a direct local-MBOX uploader. |
| Microsoft 365 with a live IMAP source within documented limits | Microsoft’s native IMAP migration | 35 MB and 500,000-message limits apply to that service. |
| Need server access without migration risk | Keep the MBOX local in a mail client or viewer | The archive will not appear in the destination IMAP account. |
Bottom line
A very large MBOX can often reach an IMAP mailbox, but only through message-aware processing. Use a verified backup, a small pilot, MBOX-safe batches, resumable checkpoints, destination-limit checks, and independent count and content validation. Treat total archive size as a planning issue; treat individual message size, quota, throttling, metadata mapping, and recovery behavior as the issues that decide whether the migration actually succeeds.
