Yes, you can remove a jailbreak, but the method you choose decides what happens to your data, your iOS version, and your eSIM. There are two different routes. The first is a tool-specific Restore RootFS function, which tries to reverse the system changes made by a particular jailbreak tool and may keep the iOS version you already run, depending on the tool and device. The second is Apple’s erase or computer restore, which wipes the device and installs the latest iOS available through that restore path. Deleting a jailbreak app alone does not undo the system modifications, so pick the route that matches what you need to keep.
Two goals that produce different results
People searching this question usually want one of two outcomes, and they are not the same thing:

- Remove the jailbreak but keep the current iOS version. This points to the jailbreak tool’s own Restore RootFS function, if that tool offers one for your device and iOS version.
- Return to a clean, Apple-supported software state. This points to Apple’s erase or computer restore. It removes information and settings and installs the latest iOS available through the restore path, so the firmware you end up on is not your choice.
Knowing which goal you have prevents the most common mistake, which is running a factory reset expecting an older jailbreak-compatible iOS to remain, or expecting an app deletion to clean up the system.

- Identify the exact jailbreak tool you used and the iOS version currently installed (Settings > General > About > Software Version).
- Identify your iPhone model. Jailbreak support is tied to specific devices and iOS versions, so the same tool may not cover both.
- Decide whether you need your personal data. If you do, make a backup before any erase or restore.
- Have your Apple Account credentials ready. Apple restore steps can require them, and a forgotten passcode or locked account needs Apple’s own account recovery, which is separate from the jailbreak question.
- If you plan to restore through a computer, confirm you have a USB cable compatible with both the iPhone and the computer. Whether you need a new cable depends on the connectors you already own.
Route 1: Remove a jailbreak with a tool’s Restore RootFS function
Restore RootFS is a function built into some jailbreak tools, not an Apple feature. Its purpose is to reverse the modifications that the tool made to the system volume. The unc0ver project documents this approach and describes it as a way to uninstall its jailbreak software. Its instructions are specific to unc0ver, so do not apply them to another tool without confirming that tool’s own documentation.

How the process is described
- Open the jailbreak tool’s documentation for your exact device and iOS version and confirm it lists a Restore RootFS option.
- Enable the Restore RootFS option as the documentation describes.
- Rerun the jailbreak process from that tool. According to the unc0ver documentation, this is what uninstalls the jailbreak software.
- Check the result. Confirm that the jailbreak app is gone and that the device behaves as expected before you rely on it.
What this route cannot promise
- Availability. Restore RootFS exists only where the tool supports it. Tool support changes, and older guides may no longer match the current release.
- Data safety. Whether user data is preserved depends on the tool and device. Do not assume it; if your data matters, back up first.
- Version retention. The tool may keep your current iOS version, but that depends on the tool and process.
The unc0ver project also warns about software updates. Its documentation states: “unc0ver Team strongly cautions against installing any iOS software update that breaks unc0ver as you can’t re-jailbreak on versions of iOS that are not supported by unc0ver at that time.” If you plan to stay on your current iOS version, do not install an update until you have confirmed the tool is compatible with it.
Route 2: Apple’s erase or computer restore
Apple’s route gives you a clean software state, not a version choice. Use it when you want Apple’s standard system or when a tool-specific removal is unavailable for your device.

Erase on the iPhone
- Back up the device if you want to keep personal content.
- Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings.
- When asked about the eSIM, choose whether to keep or delete it (see the eSIM section below).
- Follow the prompts and enter your passcode or Apple Account credentials when requested.
- After the erase finishes, set the iPhone up again and restore your data from iCloud or a computer backup if you made one.
Restore with a computer
- Update the computer to its current operating system so the restore tool works correctly.
- Make a backup if you want to keep data. Apple’s guidance treats this as optional, but it is the only way to recover content afterward.
- Turn off Find My. On the iPhone, go to Settings, tap your name, tap Find My, and turn off Find My iPhone.
- Connect the iPhone to the computer with a compatible USB cable.
- On a Mac, open Finder. On a Windows PC, open the Apple Devices app.
- Select your iPhone and choose Restore. Apple states: “Your computer erases your device and installs the latest iOS, iPadOS, or iPod software.”
Note that this outcome is fixed. If you need to stay on a particular iOS version, the computer restore will not preserve it.

Backups and what they can bring back
Apple’s erase and restore procedures remove information and settings from the device. Afterward, Apple’s backup instructions explain how to restore data from iCloud or a computer during setup. Keep these points in mind:

- The iRecovery Stick extracts messages, call history, contacts, web history, calendar appointments, photos, voice memos, email accounts, and map history directly from iPhone and iPad devices. Running entirely from the USB stick with no software installed on the device or computer, it leaves no trace that an extraction was performed.
- Uncover images concealed using photo-hiding apps and use the iSearch keyword function to search for specific words, names, phone numbers, or symbols across the entire device at once, eliminating the need to manually browse through individual apps and folders. Bookmark important findings and export content for reporting and analysis.
- The iRecovery Stick processes phone backup files stored on your Windows PC or copied from a Mac computer. If a device was backed up to a computer before items were deleted, those items may still be recoverable from the backup. Photos sent in text message conversations but deleted from the photo library may also be recovered if the conversation was not deleted.
- The iRecovery Stick requires physical access to the target device. The user must be able to disable the passcode, Touch ID, or Face ID before extraction begins. If the device was previously backed up to a computer using a password, that password will also be required to process the backup data.
- Use the iRecovery Stick on as many iPhone and iPad devices as needed with no per-device fees. Free lifetime updates ensure ongoing compatibility with future iOS versions, backed by 25+ years of data software expertise from Paraben Consumer Software.
- A backup may require a newer iOS version before it can be restored. If your backup was made on a later release than the one the restore installs, you may need to update.
- A backup is a way to recover personal data. It is not a guaranteed way to bring jailbreak modifications back onto a clean system. Sources here do not establish that an ordinary backup carries jailbreak changes forward.
The eSIM and your cellular plan
The two erase paths handle the eSIM differently. A computer restore does not delete the iPhone’s eSIM. The on-device erase flow asks whether to keep or delete it. If you delete the eSIM, your carrier must reactivate the cellular plan, so have your carrier’s activation details or account access available before you choose that option.
If you suspect malicious software or unwanted access
A jailbreak is not the same as a compromise, but if you are removing software because the device may have been tampered with, Apple’s guidance changes the approach:

- First consider whether the concern is really about sharing settings or app access. Apple recommends checking Safety Check’s Manage Sharing & Access before doing a factory reset, because that may solve the problem without erasing the device.
- If you still plan to restore because malicious software may be installed, Apple advises against restoring from a backup. A backup can reinstall the software you are trying to remove.
- Set the device up as new and add back only the data you trust.

- If the computer does not recognize the iPhone, try a different cable or port and confirm the computer is updated.
- If Find My blocks the restore, turn it off as described above and try again.
- If you cannot sign in to your Apple Account or have forgotten your passcode, use Apple’s account recovery process before attempting the restore.
- If the jailbreak tool no longer supports your iOS version, do not update to chase compatibility. Use the Apple route if you need a working device.
Confirm the exact model, iOS version, and jailbreak tool before following any tool-specific instructions. Apple’s menus and computer apps change over time, so check the current labels on your device.
