Yes, you can uninstall the Alexa app from a phone or computer, but that only removes the app from that device. It does not turn off an Echo, erase Alexa history, or remove an Echo from your Amazon account. Those require separate actions: switch off the Echo’s microphone, manage history in Alexa Privacy, or deregister the device, depending on what you want to accomplish.
What does “uninstall Alexa” mean?
Alexa can refer to the app installed on a device, the voice assistant on an Echo, information saved to your Amazon account, or an Echo registered to that account. These controls are separate.

How to remove the Alexa app from a phone or computer
Uninstall the app through the app-removal controls for the operating system on the device where it is installed. The exact steps vary by platform and version; Amazon’s help pages cited here do not establish a universal menu path for iOS, Android, Fire OS, Windows, or macOS. Removing the app is a local change: use Amazon’s separate account and privacy controls if you also want to address an Echo or account data.

On a supported Echo, press its microphone enable/disable button. Amazon says the microphone power is disconnected and a red indicator appears. While the microphones are off, the device cannot interact with Alexa by voice or record and stream audio to the cloud. On supported Echo devices, presence detection is also disabled. This control stops voice use while it is on; it does not remove the Echo from your Amazon account.

How to delete Alexa voice history
In the Alexa app, open More > Alexa Privacy to review and delete voice recordings, transcripts, and typed requests. Amazon’s automatic-deletion instructions give this route: More > Alexa Privacy > Review Voice History. From there, you can filter by date range, device, or profile and select chats to delete. The interface may vary by device.

For future retention, Amazon’s “Don’t save” setting prevents future voice recordings from being saved and deletes existing recordings after processing. Transcripts and typed requests remain until they have been inactive for 30 days, after which Amazon says they are automatically deleted; linked Voice IDs are also deleted. You can use voice commands only after enabling deletion by voice in Alexa Privacy settings. Amazon lists “Delete what I just said,” “Delete everything I said today,” and “Delete my entire voice history.” Amazon says voice deletion commands are not supported for Alexa+ or on Amazon Kids-enabled devices. What history deletion does not guarantee
Amazon says a deletion request starts a secure deletion process, but timing varies and requested data may still be used while processing. These controls do not necessarily delete information collected by third parties or stored outside Amazon’s cloud—for example, data retained by a skill developer. Deleting Alexa history is therefore not a guarantee that every related record elsewhere is erased. Amazon explains these limits in its privacy guidance.

- Sign in to your Amazon account and open Devices.
- Select the Echo you want to remove.
- Choose Deregister and confirm if prompted.
Amazon says deregistration removes the device from your account and disconnects it from digital content and Amazon services. The Echo temporarily loses access to the account, purchased content, and services. You can register it again using Amazon credentials. Deregistering is the relevant step when you are selling, giving away, returning, or switching accounts; it is not the same as uninstalling the phone app. See Amazon’s device deregistration instructions.

Which action should you take?
- You only want the app off your device: uninstall it through that device’s operating-system controls.
- You want an Echo to stop responding to speech: switch off its microphone using the device button.
- You want to manage saved Alexa data: review Alexa Privacy and delete history or adjust the available retention setting.
- You are transferring or no longer using an Echo: deregister it from your Amazon account.
