How to choose an open-source alternative
Compare the job you need done, not just the price tag. Check whether the free version includes the features you use, whether your files or projects transfer cleanly, and whether the app supports your operating system. For work shared with clients or colleagues, test a representative project before making the new app your default.

“Open source” also describes licensing and access to source code; it does not guarantee that every component or feature is free of charge. Bitwarden, for example, distinguishes its core client code from some organization-oriented modules. Account needs, privacy expectations, and self-hosting requirements vary by app and setup.
Bitwarden for passwords
Bitwarden is a desktop password manager to consider if you want a vault across Windows, macOS, or Linux. Its official site says the desktop app is available for those platforms and that its code is publicly hosted for review: Bitwarden’s open-source information.

Do not assume every component uses the same license. Bitwarden’s licensing FAQ identifies the core client code as GPL-3.0 and says some organization-oriented modules use a commercial source-available license: Bitwarden licensing FAQ. The source article describes unlimited passwords and devices on the free tier and says password monitoring requires a paid subscription, but those plan details were not independently confirmed here. Check the current plan page before relying on a particular feature.
A password manager is a good fit if your main need is storing and retrieving credentials across devices. If you are considering self-hosting, treat it as an advanced choice: it adds setup and maintenance responsibilities rather than making the app automatically more private or convenient.

LibreOffice for documents and spreadsheets
LibreOffice groups Writer, Calc, and Impress for word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations. It can handle many routine tasks that users otherwise do in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint. The Document Foundation identifies MPL 2.0 as LibreOffice’s principal license, while noting that some included components use other open-source licenses: LibreOffice licensing.

File compatibility is specific to the document and workflow. A straightforward document may be easy to exchange, while complex Excel workbooks, automations, macros, or carefully tuned formatting can behave differently. Before switching, open copies of your important files, check formulas and macros, and export a sample in the format your collaborators require, such as DOCX when requested. Also consider whether your work depends on shared editing or other collaboration features beyond desktop file editing.
Kdenlive for timeline video editing
Kdenlive is a timeline-based editor for people who want to assemble and export videos without a subscription. It may suit hobby projects, teaching videos, or straightforward content work, provided its editing workflow and system requirements meet your needs. It should not be treated as equivalent to every professional editing suite, particularly if your work depends on specialized color grading or a specific project-file workflow.

GIMP for image editing and retouching
