On supported models, you can switch off a smart TV’s built-in microphone and keep streaming apps running. LG says that, depending on the market, apps and other essential features can keep working without optional data-driven services. The catch is that “microphone off” covers less than most people assume, and the exact control depends on the brand, model, software version, and country.
What a microphone switch actually turns off
A TV has at least three things that can be called a microphone or voice feature: a microphone built into the TV, a microphone in the remote, and a microphone in a phone or app that sends voice to the TV. Each one has its own control. Turning off one does not necessarily turn off the others, and none of them is the same thing as the data a TV collects about what you watch.

Streaming apps are a separate function. The controls described below are about voice capture and voice commands, not about whether Netflix, YouTube, or live TV will open and play.

Remote voice is a different path. LG’s support article describes speaking while you press the microphone button on the remote. Setting up voice recognition requires a network connection and agreement to LG’s terms. LG says menu-driven voice search settings vary by model, so the manual for your exact set is the reliable guide.

According to LG’s privacy statement, a voice session ends after about 10 seconds of inactivity and lasts at most about 18 seconds. Those are LG’s stated figures for its own system and are not a general standard for other brands.

Roku TV
Roku TV works differently. Roku’s Roku TV User Guide v12.5 (US English, dated Fall 2023) says:
“Your Roku TV does not have a built-in microphone.”

There is therefore no microphone switch on the TV to turn off. Voice on Roku comes from a voice remote or from the Roku mobile app, which can supply a microphone to channels. To control which channels can use that microphone, go to Settings > Privacy > Voice > Microphone access > Channel microphone access. The options are Prompt, Always allow, and Never allow. According to the guide, this channel permission does not affect Roku Voice Search. The path and options are specific to version 12.5 and may differ on other software versions or in other markets.
Google TV and Google Assistant
Google’s Assistant help page covers voice on certain non-Android TV devices. On those devices, saying “Disable information sharing” turns off Google Assistant and the manufacturer’s voice services. That is a voice-service control, not a general microphone switch, and the page does not say it stops streaming apps.

The same page lists the kinds of commands Assistant handles on supported systems: voice playback, voice search, opening apps, and playback control. If you disable voice services, expect those commands to stop.
Samsung
The only Samsung statement in the material checked concerns 2015 Smart TVs. It says that disabling Voice Recognition data collection may prevent some voice-recognition features from working. Treat that as historical evidence for those models. It does not establish the controls on current Samsung sets, so check the manual for your model and year.

How to check your own TV
- Find your exact model number and software version. They are usually on the rear label or in the TV’s information or support screen. The menu path differs by brand.
- Look for a physical microphone switch on the TV or remote. LG documents one on supported models. If you don’t find one, the TV may not have a built-in microphone, or the control may be in software.
- Search the manual for “microphone,” “voice recognition,” “voice,” and “ACR.” Those words usually lead to the relevant controls.
- Decide whether you want remote voice. If not, turn off the voice setting or stop using the remote’s microphone button.
- Make the change, then open each streaming app you use and play something to confirm it still works.
- Review privacy settings separately. Microphone controls do not change the other data categories described below.
What a microphone switch does not cover
Turning off a microphone addresses voice capture or voice control only to the extent that the switch or setting covers the relevant microphone. It does not show that other data uses have stopped. Google’s TV privacy page lists several categories separately: watch activity, app interactions, device information, analytics, advertising, and personalization. Each one is handled through its own settings, and you should look at each of them if privacy is your goal.

If something stops working
- A streaming app won’t open or play after the change. The controls described above are tied to voice features, so check the network connection, app updates, and whether the app is offered in your country before blaming the microphone setting.
- Voice search stops. This is expected if you disabled Google Assistant or the manufacturer’s voice services, or if you turned off the built-in microphone on a model where that controls hands-free recognition.
- Roku voice still works after you changed channel microphone access. That is consistent with the v12.5 guide, which says the permission does not affect Roku Voice Search.
- Your menu doesn’t match these paths. The steps here come from specific manuals and versions. Follow the manual for your exact model and firmware.
