The combo gateways Xfinity currently lists for customer-owned use are the ARRIS G34, ARRIS G36 and ARRIS G54, and all three are marked as having built-in Wi-Fi. Which one fits depends on three things: whether Xfinity lists it for your address, whether its published wired ceiling clears your plan’s speed, and whether you need a combo at all.
Combo, standalone modem, or Xfinity-rented gateway
Before comparing models, it helps to separate three kinds of equipment that often get lumped together.

| Option | What it is | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Modem router combo (customer-owned gateway) | One device that combines the cable modem and the router, with built-in Wi-Fi | Xfinity’s own-equipment support page covers this category. The G34, G36 and G54 are the combos on Xfinity’s current device listing. |
| Standalone modem with a separate router | A modem that only connects you to the network, paired with your own Wi-Fi router | Community forum posts ask about modems such as the Motorola MB8611, Arris S33 and Netgear CM200. Those are user questions, not Xfinity recommendations, and this article does not evaluate them. |
| Xfinity-rented gateway | Equipment supplied and managed by Xfinity | This is not a retail purchase. Xfinity’s gateway overview describes its features separately from customer-owned choices. |
If you are shopping for a single retail box to replace your modem and router, you are looking at the first row.

The combo models Xfinity lists
Xfinity’s device listing, as accessed in 2026, describes these products as gateways and marks built-in Wi-Fi as “Yes.” The speed figures are Xfinity’s published wired download ceilings.

| Model | Built-in Wi-Fi (Xfinity listing) | Wired download ceiling (Xfinity listing, accessed 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| ARRIS G34 | Yes | Up to 934 Mbps |
| ARRIS G36 | Yes | Up to 2.37 Gbps |
| ARRIS G54 | Yes | Up to 2.34 Gbps |
These are ceilings, not guarantees. They do not promise that your plan is available at that speed, that you will see the same throughput over Wi-Fi, or that the figure holds in your home.
ARRIS G34: the lowest ceiling of the three
The G34 is listed with a wired ceiling of up to 934 Mbps. It fits a plan whose download speed sits comfortably below that figure. A plan faster than 934 Mbps would exceed what this model is listed to support, so it is not a candidate for those tiers.
Rank #2

- AC1900 WIFI COVERAGE FOR THE WHOLE HOME: Stay connected in every room with dual-band AC1900 WiFi covering up to 1,800 sq ft and Beamforming+ for stronger signal to mobile devices. Real-world coverage depends on home size, layout, and building materials.
- WIRED CONNECTIONS FOR YOUR FASTEST DEVICES: Four Gigabit Ethernet ports keep gaming consoles, desktops, and streaming devices hardwired for the lowest latency and the most stable connection in your home.
ARRIS G36: the highest published ceiling
The G36 is listed with a wired ceiling of up to 2.37 Gbps, the highest of the three models. It leaves the most headroom if your plan is faster or you expect to upgrade. It still has to appear on Xfinity’s list for your address, and its ceiling only matters if your plan actually reaches that range.

The G54 is listed with a wired ceiling of up to 2.34 Gbps. For most plan speeds, its published ceiling is close to the G36’s, so the choice between them usually comes down to which one Xfinity lists for your address and which one is available to you.
Rank #3
- Compatible with major cable internet providers including Xfinity and Cox. NOT compatible with Verizon, Spectrum, AT&T, CenturyLink, DSL providers, DirecTV, DISH and any bundled voice service. Best for cable provider plans up to 800Mbps.
Speed ceiling versus your plan
A wired ceiling is the maximum the device is listed to support over a wired connection. Your plan’s download speed is what you pay for. Compare the two numbers, and do not treat the ceiling as the speed you will see. Wi-Fi throughput depends on the devices you use, their distance from the gateway, and the walls between them. Xfinity’s listing does not provide Wi-Fi range or throughput figures for these models, and the sources reviewed here include no independent Wi-Fi testing of them, so any Wi-Fi performance estimate would be a guess.
Fiber-to-the-unit customers
If your building is served by fiber delivered to your unit, the combo category may not be the right one. Xfinity’s own-equipment guidance says customers in that setup can use a standard router compatible with their speed tier. In that case, a cable modem combo is not the required device, and buying one may not solve your problem.
Rank #4
- MAXIMIZE YOUR CABLE INTERNET AND WHOLE-HOME WIFI: A cable modem and WiFi router in one device unlocks the full potential of your home internet with faster downloads, smoother WiFi for gaming and video calls, and reliable coverage in every room.
- APPROVED FOR YOUR PROVIDER AND PLAN: Works with Xfinity internet plans up to 800Mbps, Spectrum up to 1Gbps, and Cox up to 1Gbps. Not compatible with Verizon, AT&T, CenturyLink, DirecTV, DISH, or bundled voice plans. ISP activation required after setup.
- MULTI-GIG DOCSIS 3.1 SPEEDS: Get Gigabit+ cable download speeds on today's fastest plans, with headroom for the upgrades ahead. Real-world speeds depend on your plan and ISP network.
- WIFI 6 COVERAGE FOR THE WHOLE HOME: Stay connected in every room with dual-band AX2700 WiFi 6 covering up to 2,000 sq ft and capacity for 25+ connected devices.
How to check a model before you buy
- Open Xfinity’s device checker, which is linked from its support page on using your own modem, router or gateway. Sign in for results tied to your account, or enter your address if you are not a customer yet.
- Confirm your service type. Find out whether your home is served by cable or by fiber delivered to the unit.
- Check your current download speed tier in your Xfinity account, and compare it with the model’s wired ceiling.
- Confirm that the exact model name appears in the results for your address. Do not rely on a model being listed elsewhere or on a community post.
- Recheck the listing shortly before you buy. Xfinity says it refreshes the list quarterly, based on network performance data, so a model can be added or removed.
Xfinity’s compatibility guidance sums up the requirement in one line: “Your modem must work with Xfinity and support your internet speed.”
Buying new equipment
Xfinity encourages customers to buy new equipment from reputable sources. It also says newer equipment offers manufacturer support for performance and security issues. That is a reason to prefer current hardware from a known seller over a used unit of uncertain age, though it does not make any particular listed model the right one for your home.
Best Value
- 16x4 DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem plus a built-in AC1900 Dual Band (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) WiFi Gigabit Router with four Gigabit (GigE) Ethernet ports, a firewall DFS, Power Boost, and more. This product is recommended for actual cable Internet service speeds up to 375 Mbps. A Broadcom cable modem chipset provides security from Denial of Service attacks. WiFi performance is exceptionally good, even in multi-dwelling units with lots of WiFi noise from neighbors. DFS and Power Boost are key
- Requires cable Internet service. Approved by and for use with Comcast Xfinity and Xfinity X1, Cox, Charter, Time Warner Cable, Suddenlink, WOW., CableOne and other cable service providers. Eliminate cable modem rental fees up to 156 dollars per year. (Savings are shown for Xfinity and vary by cable service provider. No cable modem is compatible with fiber optic, DSL, or satellite services from Verizon, AT&T, CenturyLink, Frontier, and others. Model MG7550 has no phone jack.)
- Built-in high-speed Wi-Fi router with AC1900 Wi-Fi, and Power Boost, and DFS provides Internet access for Wi-Fi devices including smartphones, notebooks, tablets, game stations, HDTVs, Amazon Echo, Google Home, Chromecast, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, and AppleTV. Four 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports provide wired connections to Windows and Mac computers, HDTVs, game stations, streaming TV devices, and other Ethernet-capable devices.
- Wireless Power Boost adds high-performance WiFi power amplifiers to boost the wireless signals to the legal limit, giving a significant boost in speed and range. The router can work on WiFi DFS frequencies, unlike most routers, so it is much less vulnerable to WiFi interference from neighbors. In addition, AnyBeam beamforming at both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies focuses the signal on wireless clients to further enhance performance and range.
- Integrating the cable modem and router creates a reliable connection that reduces unwieldy wiring and power adapter clutter while conserving desk space. The vertical design minimizes shelf space and improves cooling while looking great in any home or office. A two-year warranty plus rugged lightning and power surge circuits protect your investment.
What is and is not established
The figures in this article are Xfinity’s published wired download ceilings for the G34, G36 and G54, taken from its device listing as accessed in 2026. Xfinity describes its list as refreshed quarterly and based on network performance data, not manufacturer influence. That is Xfinity’s own description of its process, and no independent study of how it selects or tests these models was found. No independent benchmark or survey of retail combo performance was established, so this article does not rank these models on Wi-Fi range, real-world throughput or reliability.
No single model is the best option for every Xfinity customer. The G36 has the most headroom on paper, but it is only the right purchase if it is on the list for your address and your plan is fast enough to use that headroom.
