Yes. You can take photos through binoculars by aligning a smartphone camera with one eyepiece, a technique often called digiscoping or phonescoping. A compatible phone adapter makes alignment easier to repeat, but it cannot eliminate the limits of the optics, light, focus, or camera movement. Expect useful nature and travel snapshots rather than results guaranteed to match a dedicated telephoto camera.
What you need to photograph through binoculars
The binocular eyepiece acts as part of the phone’s imaging system: the phone must capture the light leaving that eyepiece. Start with a smartphone’s rear main camera and one binocular eyepiece. For easier, steadier alignment, add an adapter designed for the particular phone and optics.

Essential: a smartphone and binoculars
Use the rear camera lens that can sit directly over the eyepiece. Phones with multiple rear cameras may switch lenses automatically, so check which physical lens is active rather than relying only on the camera app’s zoom label; ZEISS’s digiscoping adapter manual advises checking camera placement.

An adapter holds the phone and helps center its camera over one eyepiece. Compatibility is model-specific: check the phone’s dimensions and camera layout, plus the binocular eyecup or eyepiece geometry. Follow the adapter maker’s fit guidance rather than assuming mounts are interchangeable. For example, Opticron describes a phone mount for selected eyepieces; SWAROVSKI OPTIK describes its VPA for its binoculars and spotting scopes; and Celestron says its DX kit fits eyepieces including binoculars. Those are distinct examples, not a shared compatibility guarantee.

- COMPATIBLE EYEPIECES: Smartphone adapter fits almost any eyepiece from 29 millimeters to 45 millimeters in diameter, including telescopes equipped with 1.25” eyepieces.
Optional: tripod, trigger, and battery pack
- Tripod and compatible binocular mount: Support can reduce movement, especially at higher magnification or with longer exposures. Confirm that the binoculars can be safely mounted; mounting provisions differ by model. ZEISS and Opticron discuss stable support in their guidance.
- Phone timer or remote shutter: A timer or compatible Bluetooth remote avoids the movement caused by tapping the phone. ZEISS suggests a 2–5 second timer or remote; Celestron’s cited DX kit includes a Bluetooth release. Check phone compatibility.
- Battery pack: Kowa lists this as an accessory consideration for longer field outings; it is not necessary for basic use.
How to take a photo through binoculars
- Choose a stationary, well-lit subject. Begin at modest magnification if your binoculars allow it; a bright, still subject makes alignment and focus easier.
- Align the phone with one eyepiece. If using an adapter, secure the phone and identify the active rear camera lens. Center that lens precisely over the eyepiece and use any supplied safety restraint, following the adapter’s instructions.
- Check the live camera view. Adjust the phone’s position until the circular view is centered and clear. A dark ring around the picture is vignetting. Small changes in alignment or zoom can change how much of the ring appears.
- Focus the binoculars, then the phone. Focus the binoculars on the subject first. If your camera app allows it, lock phone focus to prevent it hunting; Kowa recommends focus lock for smartphone digiscoping.
- Steady the setup and trigger the shot. Brace or mount the binoculars if possible. Use a timer or compatible remote instead of tapping the screen when movement is a problem.
- Review and adjust. Check sharpness, framing, and any dark border. Recenter the phone or adjust the binocular eyepiece before relying on phone zoom.
What affects image quality
There is no single image-quality result for all binocular-and-phone combinations. The phone needs a well-aligned light path, and the outcome depends on the optics, phone camera, available light, focus, and steadiness. The narrow view through an eyepiece can make finding and framing a distant subject awkward; shallow depth of focus and movement can make sharp results harder to get.
Vignetting and zoom
Vignetting is the black circular edge that appears when the phone camera does not capture the full light path from the eyepiece. First adjust alignment. Zoom behavior varies: Opticron notes that increasing device zoom can reduce vignetting in some systems, while Kowa advises against digital zoom in that situation because it reduces image quality and suggests using the scope eyepiece zoom. These recommendations are setup-dependent; digital zoom may hide a border by cropping the image, but it does not add detail.

- Capture What You See Through Your Scope — TRIDAPTOR helps connect your smartphone to most spotting scope, telescope, monocular or microscope eyepieces, so you can capture and share birds, wildlife, targets, celestial objects and distant scenes.
- Precise 3-Axis Alignment for Cleaner Shots (Patent Pending) — This 3-axis digiscoping adapter lets you adjust your phone left/right, up/down and forward/back to line up the camera with the eyepiece. The Z-axis adjustment helps reach the right eye relief, reducing dark edges or vignetting for clearer photos and videos.
- All-Metal Build, No Phone Sagging — Rigid aluminum construction helps keep your phone steady and aligned, unlike flimsy plastic telescope phone adapters that can flex, tilt or lose position. Rubber pads help protect your phone and eyepiece from scratches.
- Shoot Without Touching the Scope — Use the included Bluetooth remote with this phone scope adapter to take photos or videos without tapping your phone and shaking the image, making it easier to capture sharper shots and share your view.
- Fits Most Phones & Many Standard Eyepieces — This smart phone adapter for telescope fits most iPhone and Android smartphones from 2.36"–3.44" wide / 60–87.5 mm. It also fits eyepieces with an outer diameter of 0.86"–2.4" / 22–61 mm.
Movement, light, and focus
Dim light and a moving phone or binocular can make a usable exposure difficult. Support the optics, keep the subject centered while setting up, and use a timer or remote to reduce handling movement. Refocus if the subject distance changes; use phone focus lock when it helps prevent focus hunting.
Choosing a setup: practical trade-offs
| Choice | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Hand-held alignment | You want to try the technique without buying an adapter. | Keeping the camera centered over the eyepiece can be difficult to repeat. |
| Dedicated phone adapter | You plan to photograph through binoculars regularly. | Fit depends on the phone camera layout and the particular eyepiece or adapter design. |
| Hand-held binoculars | Portability and quick observation matter most. | Hand movement can affect framing and sharpness. |
| Tripod and compatible mount | You need steadier framing or longer exposures. | It adds setup and equipment; not every binocular model has the same mounting provision. |
| Timer or remote shutter | Pressing the phone screen shakes the setup. | A remote must work with your phone; a timer is simpler but adds a short delay. |
| Optical eyepiece adjustment | You need to change magnification or address vignetting. | What helps depends on the binocular and phone combination. |
| Phone digital zoom | You want to crop the view or reduce a dark border in some systems. | Cropping can lower effective detail; Kowa cautions against using it to fix vignetting. |
These are usability considerations, not measured performance rankings: the manufacturer guidance does not establish controlled side-by-side image-quality results.

Keep binoculars away from the Sun
Never use binoculars—or any other optical equipment—to look at or project the Sun. Celestron warns that doing so can cause irreversible eye damage and heat damage to optics and attached accessories.

SWAROVSKI OPTIK’s digiscoping guide says that “A pair of binoculars or a spotting scope combined with a digital camera or smartphone and the right adapter enables you to take beautiful photos.” That describes the opportunity, not a guarantee of a particular sharpness, equivalent focal length, megapixel result, or professional quality. No controlled comparison establishes that binocular-phone images match those from a dedicated telephoto camera.
