Yes, but mainly as a vintage device—not as a dependable modern smartphone. The original iPhone, introduced in 2007, has 2G GSM cellular hardware and software support ending at iPhone OS 3.1.3. Whether it can make calls or use mobile data depends on a compatible 2G network still operating where you are; in the United States, that option has ended on the three major carriers.
What “usable” means for the original iPhone
An original iPhone may still be worth powering on as a collectible or novelty device, assuming its hardware works. But practical use splits into two very different cases: relying on it as a phone, or enjoying it as an old piece of technology. Apple identifies the original iPhone as a model introduced in 2007 and provides an iOS 3.1 user guide.

Can it make calls or use mobile data?
The original iPhone supports 2G GSM and GPRS/EDGE data; it has no 3G or later cellular radio. A technical specification reference lists its maximum software version as iOS 3.1.3 (GSMArena specifications). Calls and mobile data therefore depend on a usable local 2G GSM network and a carrier that accepts the device.
In the United States
MacRumors reported that T-Mobile retired its 2G GSM network on August 3, 2026, leaving all three major US carriers without 2G service; its report also gives AT&T’s 2G retirement year as 2017 (MacRumors, August 6, 2026). That means the original iPhone should not be relied on for cellular calls or mobile data through a major US carrier.

Outside the United States
2G availability varies by country and carrier, and network status can change. Check directly with the local carrier whether it still operates compatible GSM service and accepts the original iPhone before buying one or counting on it. The US shutdown dates do not establish the status of 2G elsewhere.
Will Wi-Fi, browsing, email, or apps still work?
The phone’s software is historical: the technical reference lists iOS 3.1.3 as its maximum version, while Apple’s support page links to an iOS 3.1 guide. That does not establish whether any particular Wi-Fi connection, website, email provider, App Store download, or app remains reachable today. Treat those functions as dependent on the individual device and the service involved; do not assume current websites or services will work.

What to check before buying or relying on one
- For phone use: verify current 2G GSM service and device acceptance with the carrier in your location. In the United States, the cited report says major-carrier 2G service has ended.
- For a collectible: ask whether that specific unit powers on, inspect its condition, and confirm which original items are included if completeness matters to you.
- For local features: check the exact Wi-Fi, media, or other function you care about on the specific phone rather than assuming it works from the model name alone.
