Yes. On October 11, 2026, Mars passes through the Beehive Cluster (M44) in the predawn sky, and binoculars can show the planet and the cluster together. A pair of 10×50 binoculars is recommended for the wide-field view; the best time and height above your horizon depend on your location.

When and where to look

The Mars–M44 pairing takes place on October 11, 2026, before sunrise. In October, Mars is a morning object: look toward the east-northeast after midnight, where it rises higher as dawn approaches. Your local clock time and the objects’ altitude above the horizon vary with your location, so check a local sky chart for the observing window where you are.

Choose a spot with a clear view toward the east-northeast. Haze and local light pollution can make the cluster harder to pick out, and bright moonlight can reduce the contrast of its fainter stars. Darker skies improve the view.

What binoculars show

M44 is a broad open cluster about 1.5 degrees across—roughly the width of three full moons side by side. That wide span makes binoculars a useful match: they can resolve around 20 of the cluster’s stars while keeping Mars and much of the cluster in one view. October 2026 observing guidance specifically recommends 10×50 binoculars for the pairing.

Expect Mars to appear as a bright point alongside a field of stars, not as a detailed planetary disk. The available observing guidance supports seeing Mars and the cluster together; it does not promise visible Martian surface features through binoculars.

Binoculars, unaided eyes, or a telescope?

Viewing method What to expect Best for
Unaided eyes Under dark skies, M44 may look like a faint, fuzzy patch. Mars is visible as a bright point. A quick look without equipment.
Binoculars They can resolve around 20 M44 stars and retain a broad view of the Mars–cluster pairing. Seeing the pairing together; 10×50 binoculars are recommended for this event.
Telescope Higher magnification can reveal more stars, but the narrower field may show less of the cluster at once. Examining more individual stars rather than framing the whole pairing.

The Beehive is about 1,000 stars roughly 600 light-years away, and NASA gives its age as around 600–700 million years. Mars and M44 only appear close in our sky; they are at vastly different distances. NASA describes conjunctions as apparent closeness from our viewpoint, not physical proximity.

Why dark skies matter

The cluster’s stars are fainter than Mars, so stray light can wash out the broad field. Find a darker location if practical, let your eyes adjust to the dimmer sky, and avoid aiming near bright lights. NASA skywatching presenter Chelsea Gohd puts the equipment choice simply: “With dark skies you might be able to spot the beehive with just your eyes, but binoculars or a small telescope will help.”
