Microsoft documents WSL 2 for Linux distributions running with a Linux kernel, not FreeBSD. To run FreeBSD on a Windows PC, use a virtual machine such as Hyper-V; to use a Linux command line integrated with Windows, install a supported Linux distribution in WSL 2.
Why FreeBSD is not a WSL 2 distribution
WSL 2 is designed to run Linux distributions using a Linux kernel in a managed virtual machine. Microsoft describes WSL as a way to use Linux tools and applications alongside Windows programs, but its documentation does not list FreeBSD as a WSL distribution. See Microsoft’s Windows Subsystem for Linux documentation and its WSL frequently asked questions.

This is a distinction between documented support and what someone might attempt with unofficial workarounds: Microsoft does not document a native FreeBSD WSL 2 installation path. If the goal is to learn FreeBSD itself, choose a FreeBSD virtual machine rather than expecting a Linux distribution in WSL to behave like FreeBSD.

Run FreeBSD in a Hyper-V virtual machine
Microsoft documents support for FreeBSD virtual machines on Hyper-V, including on Windows 10 and Windows 11, subject to the host and guest support details on its current page. Microsoft says Hyper-V supports both emulated and Hyper-V-specific devices for Linux and FreeBSD VMs. Consult the supported FreeBSD virtual machines on Hyper-V page before choosing a release or configuring the VM.
#1 Best Overall
FreeBSD Integration Services (BIS) support depends on the FreeBSD release. Microsoft’s documentation distinguishes newer releases from older ones and notes a KVP ports exception for FreeBSD 10.0. These details can affect how well the guest works with Hyper-V, so check the release-specific support and feature table instead of assuming every version has identical integration.
Hyper-V is the documented Windows-hosted route in Microsoft’s guidance. Its availability and prerequisites depend on the Windows edition, host version, and virtualization configuration; use Microsoft’s current compatibility details when planning a setup.

Choose between WSL 2 and a FreeBSD VM
| What you want to do | Best fit | What it gives you |
|---|---|---|
| Use Linux command-line tools alongside Windows apps | WSL 2 with a supported Linux distribution | A Linux environment using a Linux kernel, integrated with Windows. |
| Learn FreeBSD administration or use FreeBSD-specific tools | FreeBSD in a Hyper-V virtual machine | An actual FreeBSD guest operating system, with integration support dependent on its release. |
| Read authoritative FreeBSD documentation | The official FreeBSD Handbook | A learning reference available as a PDF; a printed copy is optional. |
WSL 2 and Hyper-V both involve virtualization-related Windows components, but their roles differ: WSL 2 runs Linux distributions, while a Hyper-V VM runs FreeBSD as a separate guest operating system. Do not select WSL simply because it uses virtualization; that does not make it a FreeBSD environment.
Check prerequisites before installing
For WSL 2, Windows Subsystem for Linux and Virtual Machine Platform features are required. Exact Windows-version requirements and installation steps can change, so confirm them on Microsoft’s WSL installation page before starting. Hyper-V host support is a separate question; check the Windows and FreeBSD support information on Microsoft’s Hyper-V documentation for your intended host and guest versions.

Learn FreeBSD without buying a book
The official FreeBSD Handbook is the natural starting point for learning the operating system. It is available as a PDF, so buying a printed reference is a matter of preference, not a prerequisite for getting started.
A practical path is to read the Handbook while using a FreeBSD VM, so commands and system behavior you encounter are from FreeBSD rather than a Linux substitute. Keep the handbook edition and your installed FreeBSD release in mind when following instructions, particularly where version-specific behavior is involved.
