The answer depends on what you mean by “Chromebook apps”: websites and extensions can work in Chrome, but legacy Chrome Apps, Google Play Android apps, and Chromebook’s Linux development environment have different requirements.
Which kind of Chromebook app do you mean?
“Chromebook apps” can refer to several different things. Identify the category first, because each has a different answer on Windows and macOS.

| What you want to use | Can you use it on Windows or Mac? | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| A website or web app | Generally, yes | Use the service’s website in a supported browser. In Chrome on Windows, Google also documents creating a shortcut to a website; it remains a website, not a Chromebook-only app. See Google’s guide to adding and opening Chrome apps. |
| A Chrome extension or theme | Often, yes | Extensions and themes are distinct from legacy Chrome Apps. Check the item’s compatibility and install it from the Chrome Web Store where available. |
| A legacy Chrome App | No, not as a Chrome App | Google says Chrome Web Store apps are supported only on Chromebooks and do not work on Windows, Mac, or Linux after December 2022. Extensions and themes are not the same category. Google’s Chrome Apps guidance explains the distinction. |
| An Android app from Google Play | Not generally through Chrome on Windows or Mac | Google Play Android apps are supported on some Chromebook models, subject to device, app, and administrator restrictions. See Google’s Chromebook Android-app guidance. |
| Linux software in Chromebook’s Linux development environment | That Chromebook environment is not available through Chrome for Windows or Mac | The Linux development environment is a ChromeOS feature for tools such as command-line utilities, code editors, and IDEs. It is not a way to run Chrome Apps or Android apps. See Google’s Linux setup guidance. |
What works if you need to keep Windows or macOS?
If the app has a website, use that version in your browser. A website shortcut can make it easier to open, but it does not install or emulate the Chromebook app. If the item is an extension, look for its Chrome Web Store listing and confirm that it is an extension rather than a legacy Chrome App.
Google Chrome is available for supported Windows computers and Macs, but browser availability does not make ChromeOS-only app categories available. Google currently lists Windows 10 and later for Intel-based systems, Windows 11 and later for ARM-based Windows systems, and macOS 13 Ventura and later. Requirements can change, so check Google’s current Chrome download and installation requirements for your computer.

Can ChromeOS Flex turn a Windows laptop or MacBook into a Chromebook?
ChromeOS Flex can install many ChromeOS features on some existing Windows, Mac, or Linux computers, but it is distinct from ChromeOS and is not a general way to get Android apps. Google says general Google Play and Android app support is unavailable in ChromeOS Flex; support for some Android VPN apps does not mean other Android apps will work. Linux development support can also vary by model. Google guarantees functionality only for certified models.
Before choosing this route, check whether your exact computer appears on Google’s ChromeOS Flex certified-model list and review the associated hardware notes. If you proceed, Google’s installation preparation guidance requires a USB drive of at least 8 GB to create the installer and warns that the drive’s contents will be erased. Follow Google’s ChromeOS Flex installation preparation instructions.

- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
Flex is relevant if you are willing to replace or change the operating system to get many ChromeOS features on supported hardware. It is not the right workaround if the specific goal is running general Google Play Android apps.

Which option should you choose?
- You need a service that runs on the web: Use its website in Chrome or another supported browser; create a shortcut if useful.
- You need an extension: Check for the extension listing in the Chrome Web Store. Do not confuse it with a Chrome App.
- You need a legacy Chrome App: Chrome on Windows or Mac will not run it as a Chrome App. Check whether the developer offers a web version or another supported replacement.
- You need an Android app: Check that a Chromebook model supports Google Play and that the particular app is compatible. An organization may restrict Play Store access.
- You are willing to install another operating system and do not need general Android apps: Check your exact computer’s ChromeOS Flex certification and hardware support before proceeding.
- You need Chromebook Linux development tools: Use a compatible Chromebook with the Linux development environment enabled, rather than expecting Chrome for Windows or Mac to provide that feature.
Chrome Apps are also being phased out on Chromebooks
Even on ChromeOS, legacy Chrome Apps have a limited support timeline. Google’s enterprise guidance says the last standard-channel ChromeOS release with Chrome Apps is scheduled for January 2028; devices on the Long-term support channel can continue using them until October 2028. These are scheduled milestones and may change, so consult Google’s current end-of-support guidance for Chrome Apps before making a decision that depends on continued access.
