Can You Run an Always-On YouTube Stream From a Cloud Server Without OBS?

You can run a YouTube live stream from a cloud server without OBS by using a compatible encoder and YouTube’s stream URL and key. Here’s how to configure it, plan bandwidth and recovery, and avoid archive and rights surprises.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes. OBS is not required: YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key, so a compatible encoder running on a cloud server can send the live feed. You still need to configure and monitor that encoder, provide stable outbound bandwidth, and plan for recovery; YouTube does not certify a particular cloud server or guarantee uninterrupted service.

What you need before starting

  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube’s setup guidance says the channel must be verified, must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days, and the user must be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup instructions.
  • A cloud server capable of running an encoder process continuously, with enough sustained outbound bandwidth for your chosen stream settings. YouTube’s documentation does not prescribe a VM size, cloud image, host, or service plan.
  • An encoder compatible with the server’s operating environment and YouTube’s ingest workflow.
  • Rights to stream all video and audio in your feed, and a plan for monitoring, restarts, and—if required—backup streaming and separate recording.

Set up the stream from a cloud server

  1. Enable and verify livestreaming. Confirm channel eligibility in YouTube Studio before configuring the server. If livestream access is restricted, resolve that first; changing encoders will not bypass YouTube’s channel requirements.
  2. Create or select a stream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room and retrieve the stream URL and stream key for the stream. The key authorizes an encoder to send video to your channel, so treat it like a password: do not publish it, place it in public logs, or share it. Reset it if you believe it has been exposed. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
  3. Choose and install a compatible encoder. Install software that runs in your server environment and can send a supported feed to YouTube. OBS is one encoder, not a YouTube requirement. The official setup workflow does not specify a particular cloud provider or encoder application.
  4. Configure the ingest connection. Use the URL and key shown for the stream, and select matching protocol settings in the encoder. Prefer RTMPS when your encoder supports it: YouTube recommends this encrypted RTMP connection over TLS/SSL. Retrieve the current RTMPS URL from Live Control Room rather than reusing an old endpoint. YouTube also supports HLS ingest for compatible workflows, including some codec use cases that RTMP does not support; confirm the current setup instructions and configure the encoder and stream settings to match.
  5. Set video and audio output. Choose resolution and frame rate first, then select the codec and bitrate using YouTube’s current recommendations for that exact combination. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for standard RTMP/RTMPS settings, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. The bitrate is not one-size-fits-all: for example, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p/30 fps, while recommendations differ for other codecs and settings. Check YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table before choosing a target.
  6. Check bandwidth and test the complete path. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate and running an upload speed test. For a cloud setup, verify that the selected server and region can sustain the required outbound throughput; this is something to validate, not a guarantee implied by YouTube. Start a test stream, inspect the incoming preview and stream-health indicators, and confirm both audio and video before relying on it.
  7. Keep the process supervised. Arrange process monitoring and restart behavior, and test a backup encoder or failover path if interruption matters. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and testing encoder failover, but does not prescribe a specific always-on server architecture.

Keep a cloud stream running reliably

“Always-on” describes the intended encoder behavior, not a promise of uninterrupted availability. The stream depends on the encoder process, the server and its network path, and YouTube ingest. A practical setup needs a way to notice a stalled feed, restart a failed process, and decide what happens if the server or connection cannot recover. Test those actions rather than assuming a process will run indefinitely.

When comparing cloud-server options, assess whether they support the ingest protocol and codec you need, can sustain the selected bitrate with bandwidth headroom, permit continuous encoder processes, and provide suitable monitoring and recovery options. Also check the provider’s own documented limits, costs, and service terms. The YouTube documentation does not establish provider-specific capabilities, pricing, or guarantees.

Plan separately for replays and rights

Long streams may not be archived

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is an archive caveat, not a statement that every live feed must stop at 12 hours. If a replay matters, arrange a separate recording or use tested sessions under the archive threshold. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Troubleshoot common cloud-stream problems

Symptom Likely check What to do
YouTube does not receive the feed Stream URL, key, protocol, and channel livestream eligibility Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, confirm the encoder uses the matching ingest protocol, and verify that the channel can livestream. Reset an exposed key.
Stream health is poor or the feed drops Whether the server’s sustained outbound bandwidth is sufficient for the total bitrate Measure available upload capacity, reduce the target bitrate or output settings if necessary, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Check the server and network path for interruptions.
Video settings are rejected or unstable Codec, resolution, frame rate, constant bitrate mode, and keyframe interval Compare the encoder output with YouTube’s current settings table. Use the two-second recommended keyframe interval and do not exceed four seconds.
The stream stops after an encoder or server issue Whether the encoder process is supervised and whether restart or backup behavior has been tested Configure process monitoring and recovery on the server, then test the recovery path and any backup encoder before relying on it.
A long live session has no replay Whether the stream exceeded 12 hours and whether a separate recording was made Do not rely on automatic archiving for sessions longer than 12 hours; record separately if the replay is important.
Content is restricted or removed Rights and policy compliance for audio, video, and reused material Review your licenses and permissions and ensure the stream complies with YouTube’s applicable terms and guidelines.
