To change tracks automatically in a 24/7 YouTube radio stream, build a playlist in the software sending your stream to YouTube. One practical do-it-yourself setup is OBS with a VLC Video Source: load your local audio files into its playlist and enable Loop Playlist. OBS sends the resulting audio-and-video feed to YouTube Live. YouTube receives that feed; it does not manage your song queue.
Where automatic track changes happen
Track selection and playback happen upstream, in your playout software or encoder. YouTube receives a live feed from that software. Its HLS playlists and media segments are delivery components, not a music playlist for choosing your next track. For a small local setup, OBS plus a VLC playlist is one straightforward route. The interface can change between OBS, VLC, and operating-system versions, so check the current controls rather than assuming every label or dialog is identical. The workflow below follows the method described by iTechGuides; it has not been independently tested here on a particular release.

Set up automatic playback with OBS and VLC
- Make sure YouTube Live is available to your channel. Create or configure a live stream in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s encoder setup guide says initial live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- Build the visual scene in OBS. Add the visual elements you want viewers to see, such as a background or station graphic. Make sure the scene will still look appropriate while audio tracks change; the playlist itself does not create or update visuals.
- Add a VLC Video Source. In OBS, add a VLC Video Source and select the local audio files you want in the rotation, arranging them in the intended order. VLC Video Source is the source described in the cited guide; exact menu wording and availability can vary by software version.
- Enable playlist looping. Turn on Loop Playlist for that VLC source so playback returns to the start after the last selected track. Confirm the playlist contains the files you intend to use and that they play in the order you expect.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, obtain the stream URL and stream key for the stream. Enter them in OBS’s streaming configuration, following YouTube’s current encoder instructions. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Start the encoder and verify the feed. Start streaming from OBS, then check YouTube Studio to confirm it is receiving the feed. Listen for audio, watch for the visual output, and confirm the playlist advances and returns to the beginning. There is no universal test procedure established for every OS and software combination, so verify the behavior in your own setup before relying on it.
Make sure you have rights to stream every track
Having an audio file or a license does not necessarily mean YouTube will let the live feed continue uninterrupted. YouTube Help states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” YouTube may replace a matched stream with a placeholder and warn the creator; unresolved content can lead to interruption or termination. If a rights owner requires it, the channel may also need to be added to that owner’s Content ID allowlist. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

- Check that your permissions cover public live streaming of each recording, not just personal playback or on-demand use.
- Ask the rights owner whether your channel must be allowlisted in Content ID, and complete that process before relying on the tracks.
- Do not assume that a playlist looping correctly means the content is cleared for YouTube Live.
What a playlist loop does—and does not—keep running
Looping restarts the selected playlist; it does not guarantee a 24/7 broadcast. A local OBS setup still depends on the computer, power, internet connection, files, and stream connection remaining functional. Plan to monitor the feed and decide how you will respond if playback stops or YouTube loses the connection.
YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archiving detail, not evidence that a longer live event will stay uninterrupted or that a 24/7 broadcast will be preserved as one archive.

Choose where the playlist runs
