Yes—if the Pi is relaying a compatible prerecorded video, rather than being expected to capture and encode a demanding live game. A Raspberry Pi can plausibly send a gaming VOD to YouTube Live, but the result depends on the source file, whether it must be re-encoded, and the streaming software’s ability to deliver valid video, audio, and timestamps.
First, decide what the Raspberry Pi needs to do
“Run a gaming VOD stream” can mean two different jobs:

- Relay a prerecorded file: The Pi reads an existing recording and sends it to YouTube Live. If the video is already in a compatible format and can be passed through or remuxed, the Pi may not need to encode every video frame.
- Capture and encode gameplay: The Pi receives a live game feed, potentially adds overlays or mixes audio, then encodes and sends it. Capture, compositing, and encoding add work that a simple file relay may avoid.
These cases should not be treated as equivalent. The available evidence does not establish that a Raspberry Pi can run a demanding game and stream it at a particular quality.
What the Pi 5 can do with H.264 encoding
Raspberry Pi Ltd.’s 2026 performance paper says the Pi 5 has no hardware H.264 encoder; it relies on software encoding with libx264 on its 2.4 GHz quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor. In the paper’s encoding test, real-time 1080p30 in low-latency mode used as little as 60% of one CPU core. Its high-quality mode used approximately 100–150% of one core. These are encoding benchmarks—not guarantees for a complete streaming application, every VOD file, overlays, audio processing, operating system, or cooling setup. Read Raspberry Pi Ltd.’s H.264 encoding performance paper.

The paper also reports that the Pi 4 hardware encoder has a bitrate ceiling of approximately 6–14 Mb/s depending on content complexity, and cannot produce bitrates below approximately 240 kb/s. Those figures are specific to the Pi 4 encoder; they do not establish a universal stream limit for other Pi models or pipelines.
YouTube ingest settings to plan around
YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingest. Its published encoder guidance lists H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into output formats for viewers. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance.

A source file’s codec is not automatically the same as a valid YouTube ingest stream. Depending on the file and software pipeline, video may need to be remuxed or transcoded, while audio and timestamps must also be suitable. If transcoding is required, the Pi has to encode the video, making its performance more important. The available sources do not establish one official command or recipe that works for every gaming VOD file.

- Inspect the recording. Identify its video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, and whether its stream can be passed through or remuxed without re-encoding.
- Check the pipeline against YouTube’s ingest guidance. Confirm that the software can send a valid RTMPS live stream with suitable H.264 video, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval (never over four seconds).
- Determine whether video encoding is necessary. If the file cannot be passed through or remuxed compatibly, test the required transcode. The Pi 5 paper’s 1080p30 low-latency result is a plausible starting point for software encoding, not a promise of end-to-end performance.
- Keep extra processing in view. Overlays, audio work, capture, and other CPU-heavy tasks add to the workload. A file relay that avoids video encoding has a different profile from a capture-and-encode setup.
- Run a full-length private or unlisted test. Check for dropped frames, audio/video synchronization problems, interruptions, and whether the stream remains stable for the duration you need before depending on it.
Raspberry Pi’s rpicam-vid documentation describes camera capture and network-streaming options, but it does not document a gaming VOD file-to-YouTube workflow. It should not be treated as a ready-made recipe for this use case. Read the rpicam-vid documentation.

What to compare with a desktop or dedicated encoder
There is no published head-to-head test here that establishes which device is faster or more reliable. For a meaningful comparison, check the actual workload and setup:
- Whether video is passed through or re-encoded
- Target resolution and frame rate
- Overlay or compositing demands
- Audio processing requirements
- Stability over the entire stream duration
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Before streaming a gaming recording, confirm that you have the rights needed for the gameplay footage, music, and other material in it. YouTube’s encoder settings explain technical ingest requirements; they do not establish that a particular VOD is cleared for streaming or monetization. A working connection does not resolve copyright or channel-policy questions.
