Yes—an unused desktop or workstation can make a useful home server, but whether it can run Docker services, host a game, store files, or transcode video depends on the workload and the specific hardware. Start by checking the processor and architecture, RAM, drive bays and drive health, network connection, supported graphics hardware, noise, and which services you actually plan to run. There is no single minimum specification that makes an old PC suitable for all four jobs.
Match the computer to the job
Before installing software, write down the intended services and how they will be used: concurrent game players, viewers, media formats and client devices, remote access, and whether several services need to run at once. These details matter more than the computer’s former gaming or workstation label.

- Docker hosting: Check that the host operating system and CPU architecture are supported by Docker Engine, then confirm that each application image supports that architecture. Docker publishes platform-specific installation guidance in its Engine installation index. Its Debian guide recommends installing and updating Engine through Docker’s apt repository.
- Game hosting: Requirements vary by game, edition, mods, player count, and server software. Minecraft’s official requirements page points readers to edition-specific requirements and cautions that minimum-spec devices may not run smoothly or support every feature. It does not establish a universal dedicated-server specification for every game.
- File storage: Count usable drive bays, inspect drive condition, and decide on capacity, pool layout, and a separate backup. A storage pool is not itself a backup.
- Media streaming and transcoding: Direct playback and transcoding are different workloads. Transcoding may tax the CPU or require a supported GPU or integrated graphics configuration.
Combining jobs can be convenient, but it also combines their resource needs and increases administration. An old PC that handles file storage well may not handle simultaneous game hosting and multiple video transcodes well.
Check the hardware and platform before installing
Processor and operating system
Record the exact CPU model and architecture, then verify that the host operating system, Docker Engine (if needed), and planned application images support them. Do not assume that an old operating system or every image will work just because the machine can boot a modern Linux distribution.

Memory and storage devices
Check installed RAM and how much the host and services will consume together. Inspect storage devices for health and capacity, and decide which will hold the operating system, application data, media, and any transcode cache. TrueNAS Community Edition’s 25.10 hardware guide lists a 2-core Intel 64-bit or AMD x86_64 processor, 8 GB of memory, a 16 GB boot device, and two identically sized storage devices for one pool. It recommends an SSD boot device and discourages a spinning disk or USB stick for boot. These are TrueNAS’s listed requirements, not universal requirements for Docker, game servers, or every NAS system. See the TrueNAS 25.10 Hardware Guide.
Graphics hardware
If media transcoding matters, identify the GPU or integrated GPU and check that the operating system and media server support hardware acceleration for it. A graphics device being present does not, by itself, establish that a particular software and driver combination can use it.

Network, noise, and placement
Prefer a wired connection for a server and check the upload speed available if you plan remote streaming. Jellyfin recommends gigabit Ethernet or faster and at least 20 Mbps upload for remote access; these are general recommendations, not guarantees for every codec, number of streams, or household. Also consider fan noise, physical space, and how the computer’s power use fits your situation. The sources cited here do not establish a universal electricity cost or noise comparison, so measure your own system rather than relying on a generic estimate.
Plan storage, app data, and backups separately
Drive count and layout should follow the storage system and the value of the data, not a generic “server” checklist. For a single storage pool, TrueNAS’s 25.10 guide calls for two identically sized storage devices. That describes the guide’s pool requirement; it does not supply a backup plan for your files. Keep a separate backup appropriate to what you cannot afford to lose.

Media-server files also need distinct locations and permissions. Jellyfin’s TrueNAS SCALE instructions for SCALE v24.10.0 or later describe installation approaches using the official Jellyfin Docker image and distinguish app configuration, cache, and transcode storage from media datasets. The container needs correct volume mounts and permissions to access media. The instructions recommend SSD-backed app storage, including configuration, cache, and transcodes; a RAM-backed transcode location can run out of space if available memory is insufficient. Consult the Jellyfin instructions for TrueNAS SCALE for that version scope.
For a general hardware-selection starting point, Jellyfin recommends a 100 GB SSD for the operating system, Jellyfin files, and transcoding cache. That is a recommendation from its hardware-selection page, not a universal minimum or a substitute for sizing media storage separately. Jellyfin hardware selection provides its network and storage guidance.

Decide whether the machine can transcode your media
Transcoding converts media to a format or quality a playback device can use. If clients can play your files directly, the server may not need to perform that conversion; when transcoding is required, the server’s CPU or supported hardware acceleration can become the limiting factor.
Jellyfin’s hardware-acceleration support depends on supported GPU and operating-system combinations. Without supported acceleration, software decoding may be used. See its hardware-acceleration documentation. Plex similarly warns that if a computer’s CPU cannot keep up with transcoding, viewers may encounter pausing or buffering while the server catches up; see Plex Media Server requirements.

For Jellyfin specifically, its container documentation says Windows and macOS container deployments are unsupported and notes limitations that include hardware-accelerated transcoding. If containerized Jellyfin with that acceleration is a priority, follow a documented supported Linux deployment path rather than assuming a Windows or macOS container will provide it. See Jellyfin container installation.
Expose services carefully if you need remote access
A service that works inside the home network is not automatically safe to expose to the internet. Docker warns that published container ports can bypass rules managed by ufw or firewalld. Before enabling remote access, understand which ports are published, what the host firewall allows, and which services will be reachable from outside your home. Review Docker’s packet-filtering and firewall guidance and avoid publishing services you do not intend to make accessible.
Choose between an old PC and a purpose-built NAS
The question “Repurpose Old Gaming PC or Buy NAS?” is best answered by the work you want done and the hardware you already own. A repurposed PC may be suitable when its supported platform, drive options, and performance match the planned services. A dedicated storage appliance may be a better fit when straightforward storage is the priority and you do not want to maintain a general-purpose computer as a server. Compare the real options against these criteria:
| Decision factor | What to assess |
|---|---|
| Primary job | File storage, Docker services, game hosting, media streaming, or a combination. |
| Workload | Concurrent players or viewers, game and mod demands, codecs, client compatibility, and remote-access needs. |
| Hardware support | CPU architecture and condition, RAM, supported GPU or integrated graphics, and number and condition of storage devices. |
| Storage design | Capacity and pool layout, boot and app-data locations, cache and transcode space, and an independent backup. |
| Network | Wired Ethernet, upload bandwidth for remote streaming, and carefully configured service exposure. |
| Operational trade-offs | Electricity use, noise, space, maintenance, and whether combining roles is worth the added administration. |
There is no system-specific benchmark here for your machine, and the cited documentation does not provide a universal power-cost or noise comparison. For performance, power use, and acoustics, assess the actual computer and intended workload rather than treating anecdotal reports as representative.
