Sometimes. Whether a laptop’s Wi-Fi card can be swapped depends on the exact model. Some laptops use a removable wireless card in an M.2 slot, while others integrate the wireless hardware into another assembly or accept only specific modules. The reliable answer for your laptop comes from the manufacturer’s service manual and parts information for your exact model and configuration, not from a general rule.
What a documented removable card looks like
Dell’s service manual for the Inspiron 15 3511 includes a WLAN card section that describes removing the card from an M.2 slot. That establishes replaceability for that model. It does not mean every laptop uses a removable card, and designs and approved parts vary from one model to the next.

Replaceability is decided model by model
Three questions determine whether a swap is practical for a given machine. Answer them from the manufacturer’s documentation before you buy anything.
Is the card a separate, removable part?
Look for a service manual section on the wireless or WLAN card. If the manual shows the card being removed from a slot, it is a candidate for replacement. If the wireless function is part of another assembly, the module may not be swappable on its own, and the remedy is a different repair path.

Will the system accept a different module?
Matching the form factor is not enough. Lenovo’s ThinkStation P3 Tiny documentation lists three supported Wi-Fi modules and states that a BIOS whitelist blocks other cards. The P3 Tiny is a compact workstation rather than a laptop, so it illustrates the principle rather than describing laptop behavior. Still, it shows why a physically similar card can fail: the firmware may refuse it, and the documentation says such cards will not work in that system.
Will the replacement’s features work with this system?
Lenovo’s published module and operating-system notes show that supported features can depend on the system and the operating system. A card that fits and is recognized may still not deliver every advertised feature on your configuration. Check the feature list against the laptop’s supported operating system before ordering.

- Whether the wireless module is a replaceable card or is integrated into another assembly.
- The supported replacement module or the manufacturer’s part number for it.
- The card slot, interface, and physical size the laptop expects.
- The number and type of antenna connectors, and whether the laptop has matching antenna leads.
- Whether BIOS or firmware qualification limits which modules the system accepts.
- Whether the features you want are supported by the laptop’s operating system and configuration.
Do not buy based on “M.2” or a Wi-Fi generation name alone. A card can match those labels and still fall outside the model’s supported list.

How a removal works on a documented example
The following sequence comes from Dell’s Inspiron 15 3511 manual. It is a model-specific example, so follow your own laptop’s manual and its cable markings.
- Prepare the computer as the service instructions direct, including any steps that come before opening the chassis.
- Remove the base cover.
- Remove the retaining screw and bracket that hold the WLAN card in place.
- Disconnect the antenna leads from the card.
- Slide the card out of its M.2 slot.
For installation, the same manual directs you to connect the antenna cables, reinsert the card into the M.2 slot, and secure the bracket and screw. Reverse the order of the removal steps, and confirm each lead is seated before you close the chassis.

Antenna lead mapping
For the Inspiron 15 3511, the manual’s antenna table maps the white lead to Main and the black lead to Auxiliary. That mapping is specific to this model. Other laptops may use different leads, colors, or connector counts, so match your own card’s connectors to the markings in your laptop’s manual. Antenna leads are small and fragile, so handle them by the connector rather than pulling on the wire.
Keep, replace, or hire out: comparing the options
There are three realistic paths. The table compares them on the factors that matter most for a replaceable card.

| Factor | Keep the current card | Replace with a manufacturer-supported module | Have a repair shop inspect or replace it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model support | Not applicable | Must appear in the laptop maker’s parts or compatibility information | Depends on the shop’s sourcing; not stated in the sources reviewed |
| Physical access | Not applicable | Depends on whether the manual documents the card as removable and what must be disassembled | Shop handles disassembly; access requirements not stated in the sources reviewed |
| Antenna readiness | Existing leads already fit the card | Existing leads must match the replacement’s connectors | Shop checks and reconnects leads; method not stated in the sources reviewed |
| Feature support | Unchanged | Must be checked against the laptop and its operating system | Depends on the module the shop installs |
| Repair confidence | No repair risk | Requires following a model-specific procedure and handling antenna connectors carefully | Transfers the procedure risk to the shop |
The sources reviewed do not establish how many laptops have replaceable Wi-Fi cards, or the success rate or cost of replacement, so no such figure appears here.
Safety and what the sources do not settle
Lenovo’s S500 hardware maintenance manual tells readers: “Do not open your computer or attempt any repair before reading and understanding the Chapter 1 ‘Read this first: Important safety information’ on page 1.” Read your own manufacturer’s safety section before opening the case.
The sources reviewed do not establish a single disassembly or battery procedure that applies to all laptops. They also do not address warranty terms or whether a particular owner should perform the repair personally. If the manual’s steps are unclear, or the card is not clearly documented as removable, a repair shop is the safer route.
