Usually, no: installing a disc-based Xbox game does not remove the disc check, so you normally need the disc in the drive to play. But there is a current exception: eligible Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs can be used to claim a limited digital license, letting you play without inserting the disc—as long as you continue to own the qualifying disc.
What happens after you install a disc game?
Installation and licensing are separate. The Xbox may copy game files from the disc or download them, but for ordinary disc-based play the disc remains the proof of the license. Microsoft says that supported Xbox 360 and original Xbox games downloaded through backward compatibility still require the disc in the drive to play (Xbox backward compatibility).

So if you install a game from a disc and then remove it, expect the console to ask you to insert the disc when you launch it—unless you have claimed the newer disc-to-digital license for an eligible title.
When can you play without inserting the disc?
Microsoft’s disc-to-digital feature lets supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs grant a limited digital license on a supported Xbox console with an optical drive. When you insert an eligible disc, check the on-screen prompt and accept the digital license. After the claim, the game appears in your library and can be played digitally without inserting the disc each time. Xbox described the feature as starting with “thousands of titles,” but that is not an exact eligible-game count (Xbox Wire’s feature announcement).

Eligibility depends on the disc
Not every Xbox One or Series X disc qualifies. Microsoft says availability can depend on technical, licensing, publishing, or other factors, and eligibility may change. The launch announcement said most Xbox One and Series X disc-based games were supported, but also noted that some titles were not available at launch. Look for the digital-license option when you insert the disc; do not assume a disc is eligible based only on its console generation.
The license stays tied to your disc
This is not a permanent conversion into a digital copy that is independent of the disc. Microsoft’s usage rules say, “The digital license remains conditioned on continued possession of the qualifying disc.” Microsoft may revalidate eligibility and suspend or revoke access if you no longer possess it; the license cannot be transferred separately from the disc (Microsoft’s Digital Goods usage rules).

Microsoft’s Xbox Series X product page distinguishes disc-drive and all-digital configurations and identifies Series S as digital-only. The disc-to-digital claim itself also requires an optical drive, so a digital-only console cannot redeem a physical disc.
Does having the disc mean you can play offline?
Not necessarily. Disc insertion and internet access are separate requirements: a disc does not guarantee that every game will run offline, because some titles depend on online services or additional downloads. Microsoft’s 2013 Xbox One policy update said disc games would work offline after an initial setup and also said the disc must be inserted to play. That statement is historical policy context, not a guarantee for every current game or for the newer disc-to-digital license (Xbox Wire’s 2013 update).
