You can level, follow the main story, explore, gather, craft, collect, run supported Normal dungeons with NPC followers, tackle Delves alone, and experience some raid stories through Story Mode.
That does not make WoW an offline game or guarantee that every dungeon, raid, difficulty, or endgame system supports solo entry. The practical answer depends on the expansion, instance, difficulty, and your account access.

What “solo” means in World of Warcraft
In WoW, solo usually means playing without a party of human players. You still connect to Blizzard’s servers, share the world with other characters, use a live Auction House, and may see players in towns and quest areas. It is different from an offline or single-player edition.

Others are simply activities designed around one character. A follower dungeon, for example, is still a five-player dungeon format, but four of those party slots are filled by computer-controlled teammates. A Delve is built to work with one player, although it can also support a small group.

“Forever solo” is therefore a useful play style rather than a permanent promise about every future feature. Blizzard can change which instances, levels, or difficulties support NPC assistance. Treat current feature lists as version-specific and check the live game when you reach a new expansion or activity.
What you can do alone
| Activity | Solo format | Best use | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Questing and campaigns | Play your character through open-world and story quests | Leveling, lore, exploration, and steady progression | Some objectives can be easier or faster with other players |
| Follower Dungeons | Normal dungeons with four NPC teammates | Learning dungeon mechanics and completing supported dungeon quests without a human group | Only selected instances and the supported difficulty are available |
| Delves | Short adventures with Brann Bronzebeard as an NPC companion | Repeatable solo play, combat, puzzles, bosses, and rewards | They are solo-capable, not solo-only, and do not replace every group progression path |
| Story Mode raids | Raid narrative with NPC assistance | Seeing selected raid story content without organizing a raid group | The available raid list changes; do not assume every raid has Story Mode |
| Gathering, crafting, pets, and collecting | Self-directed activities across one or more characters | Relaxed play, professions, pet battles, mounts, appearances, and completion goals | Trading and Auction House activity still involves the shared online economy |
A beginner route through modern WoW
Blizzard’s solo-player guide, published in September 2024, recommends this progression:
- Exile’s Reach, levels 1–10: the introductory starting area teaches movement, combat, quests, and basic class controls.
- Dragonflight, levels 10–70: the guide directs new characters into the Dragonflight leveling campaign and its surrounding zones.
- The War Within, levels 70–80: the guide then moves characters into the newer expansion’s campaign.
Those level bands describe Blizzard’s 2024 guide, not a guaranteed October 2026 catalog. Blizzard also published a February 2026 new-player starter guide whose search listing describes a current beginner story through level 70. Because Blizzard can alter the introductory route and level scaling, follow the campaign prompts shown by your current character and use the in-game Adventure Guide if the older route does not match your interface.

What to do while leveling
You do not have to rush from quest marker to quest marker. A solo character can combine campaign chapters with side quests, exploration, gathering, professions, pet battles, transmog and mount collecting, and old-world achievements. These activities are particularly useful when you want a slower pace or need a break from combat.
Quest enemies and objectives are generally tuned so a single character can complete them. Elite objectives, rare spawns, and group quests may be more demanding; you can skip them, return with better equipment, or use the game’s group-finder tools when you decide that a temporary team is worthwhile.
How Follower Dungeons work
Follower Dungeons are Blizzard’s clearest on-ramp for players who want dungeon quests without a human party. The cited guide describes them as Normal-difficulty dungeons. You choose your role, and NPCs fill the other four positions in the five-character party.
Entering and learning
Open the dungeon finder or the relevant dungeon-queue interface, select the Follower Dungeon option when it is offered, choose a supported dungeon, and queue as your character’s role. The NPCs supply the missing tank, healer, or damage roles. Availability is tied to the instance and level range shown by the game; it is not a switch that converts every dungeon into a solo activity.
Recommended Free Tools
Dungeon Assistance can allow an NPC to lead. This is useful when you are unfamiliar with the route, want to observe how a pull works, or prefer to explore without being pressured by a human group. You can take the lead when you are ready.
How many dungeons are supported?
Blizzard’s 2024 guide lists eight Dragonflight dungeons for characters in the 10–70 range and eight The War Within dungeons from levels 71–80. Those numbers are the list in that guide, not a promise that every current dungeon or every future expansion uses followers. The live queue is the authority for what your character can enter.
Follower Dungeons also do not imply access to Heroic, Mythic, Mythic+, or other higher difficulties. The official description specifically concerns Normal difficulty. If a dungeon or difficulty is absent from the follower option, you need either a human group or a different solo activity.
How Delves fit a solo playstyle
Delves are replayable adventures introduced with The War Within. Blizzard describes them as short, approximately 10–15-minute adventures on average, with Brann Bronzebeard acting as an NPC companion. They combine combat with puzzles, platforming, bosses, and rewards.
You can enter a Delve alone, or play with up to four additional friends. That makes the feature solo-capable rather than solo-only: a lone player receives NPC support, while a small group can bring its own characters.

Why choose a Delve?
- Structured sessions: a Delve has a defined beginning and end, making it easier to fit into a short play session than a long raid or zone campaign.
- Varied objectives: not every encounter is a damage test; puzzles, movement challenges, and boss mechanics reward paying attention.
- Repeatability: you can return to Delves rather than treating them as one-time story instances.
- Companion support: Brann gives a solo character assistance without requiring a scheduled party.
Blizzard presents Delves as meaningful progression and an endgame-reward route, but its descriptions do not establish that Delves replace every group progression system. If your goal is a particular raid difficulty, competitive dungeon mode, or coordinated achievement, you may still need other players.
Read Blizzard’s Delves overview for the feature’s official solo and group framing.
What Story Mode raids offer
Story Mode is designed to let players experience raid narrative without assembling a conventional raid group. Blizzard’s solo guide gives an example in which nine NPC companions assist the player during the final encounter.
This is best understood as a story-access option, not a blanket solo version of every raid. The guide said Story Mode would continue in future raids within The War Within and the broader Worldsoul Saga, but it did not provide a verified, permanent list of every supported instance. Before planning a specific raid, check the current in-game menu or Blizzard’s latest support material.
Story Mode can be the right choice when your priority is seeing the plot, characters, and cinematic beats. It should not be assumed to provide the same difficulty choices, encounters, rewards, or progression path as a normal group raid.
Solo-friendly activities outside instances
Open-world play
Questing and exploration remain the foundation of a solo character. You can follow campaign chapters, complete side stories, uncover zones, hunt rare enemies, and revisit older expansions. Scaling and level differences mean that older content may become much easier as your character advances.

Gathering and professions
Blizzard specifically names herbalism, mining, and fishing as solo-friendly gathering activities. Crafting can occupy an entire session: collect materials, learn recipes, produce equipment or consumables, and improve your profession without entering a dungeon.

You can still use them while remaining socially independent.
Pet battles and collecting
Pet battles, mounts, appearances, toys, achievements, and collectible items provide long-term goals that do not require a regular party. Collecting across multiple characters is also a way to make alts useful even when you are not pursuing the same campaign on every character.
How to reduce unwanted social interaction
WoW remains a shared online world, but Blizzard’s solo guide recommends settings that reduce unsolicited prompts.
- Leave chat channels you do not want by typing
/Leavefollowed by the channel or using the channel-management controls. - Open the game’s Social options.
- Disable or block unsolicited trade requests.
- Block unwanted guild invitations.
- Block unwanted calendar invitations.
- Block unwanted chat-channel invitations.
These controls reduce interruptions; they do not make the game offline, hide every player, or prevent all activity in shared zones. You can still communicate when you choose to, and you can temporarily join a group for a quest or objective.
Do you need a subscription or the expansion?
Access is separate from whether an activity is solo. Blizzard’s current WoW modes and versions support page distinguishes the limited modern Free Trial from the full game and says a subscription covers modern World of Warcraft except the newest expansion. It also states that The War Within has been included with the subscription since January 20, 2026, while Midnight content requires purchasing Midnight.
Best Value
The February 2026 starter-guide listing says a subscription or game time unlocks content beyond level 20 through level 80. Because access terms can vary by region and can change with a new expansion, confirm the account page for your location before paying.
| Access option | What it means for a solo beginner | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Modern Free Trial | Lets you sample a limited portion of modern WoW | It is not full access; the level and feature limits are controlled by Blizzard |
| Subscription or game time | Unlocks the modern game beyond the trial, including content through the levels described by Blizzard’s starter information | Availability and entitlements can vary by region and date |
| The War Within | Included with the subscription according to Blizzard’s support page from January 20, 2026 | Check the current account entitlement before purchase |
| Midnight | Required for Midnight-specific content | It is the newest expansion in the cited support guidance and must be purchased separately |
What still may require other players
A solo-friendly WoW account is not the same as unrestricted solo access. Expect limits in several areas:
- Not every dungeon appears in Follower Dungeons.
- Follower support described by Blizzard is for Normal difficulty, not automatically for higher difficulties.
- Not every raid has Story Mode, and the supported raid list can change.
- Delves do not replace every group-based progression path.
- Some open-world elites, rare enemies, or group objectives are faster or safer with help.
- Guild activities, trading, chat, and the Auction House are inherently connected to the player community.
These limits do not invalidate solo play. They tell you when to switch routes: use a campaign quest instead of a group objective, choose a Delve instead of a conventional dungeon, or join a temporary group only for the content you specifically want.

| Try dungeon mechanics without strangers | Follower Dungeons | NPCs fill the party and Dungeon Assistance can guide the run |

| See raid story content | Story Mode when the current raid offers it | NPC assistance provides access to selected raid narrative |
| Relax between combat sessions | Gathering, fishing, crafting, pet battles, and collecting | These activities offer goals without a scheduled group |
Bottom line for a new solo player
WoW is a viable long-term solo game if your definition is “I want to play my character without maintaining a human party.” Leveling, campaigns, exploration, professions, collecting, Follower Dungeons, Delves, and some Story Mode raids cover a substantial portion of the experience.
Choose the activity that matches your goal rather than assuming one feature handles everything. Use Follower Dungeons for supported Normal instances, Delves for repeatable solo-capable adventures, Story Mode for eligible raid narratives, and open-world content for the broadest freedom. Keep in mind that the game is online, current feature lists can change, and subscription and expansion entitlements are separate decisions.
